Some solid analyzing over at Next Generation poses some interesting ideas for the upcoming holiday season and how console sales will fare. The big question is, Will a price drop to $399 for PS3 affect Nintendo and Microsoft's sales? Here's a snippet from one of the unconvinced Sony supporters:
Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey says Sony can only do what it can with what it’s got this holiday. “We don’t think there is really anything Sony can do beyond a dramatic price cut and a verbal outcry for PS3 Blu-ray buyers to turn the tide of their dismal holiday sales outlook relative to the Xbox 360,” he says rather bleakly. “[From a software standpoint,] consumers seem to be struggling with the ‘why pay considerably more for considerably less?’ purchasing dilemma. We are increasingly less confident Sony will show anything remotely remarkable on the PS3 for this holiday.”
I kind of feel like a douchebag disagreeing with an industry analyst, but I'm going to anyway. It seems to me that the price cut for PS3 should make a fairly large impact, Regardless of titles available, I think a lot of people would want to own one if they could afford to do so (for the Blu-Ray player alone.) The gamer focused on solid titles may not be convinced that the console has what he or she desires, but the PS2 has posed sufficient proof that Sony has what it takes to have one of the greatest libraries of all time. Could PS3 follow suit?

Ps3 that is.
The Wii has the sales and the games seem to be coming, but only time will tell.
I'd also say that with the upcoming MGS4, and a number of other games on the horizon, we shouldn't worry about Sony's situation just yet. I'm actually more concerned about the Wii; the thing sold like hotcakes, but with very few games out for it or in development in it not made by Nintendo, the initial wow of it is fading fast, and sales are starting to sink. Will Smash Brothers be enough to redeem the system? I certainly want a Wii for it. Let's hope there are lots of people with that opinion out there.
Plus HD DVD has already taken over the blu-ray
Are HD Disc formats really what people want?
The PS3 will do better than it has been doing because there will be more games to ease the pain of being sold a gimped system incapable of BC. Games like Ratchet and Clank Future and Uncharted.
Sony has still done nothing to make me want a PS3. I'm sorry. That's not a fanboy talking, that's practical common sense talking. They have nothing I want.
360 will still have great sales, but many will also drop notes on PS3. It only takes a look at the reduced price to convince many. I'm sure that there might be a reduction in HD-DVD price in response to PS3 son enough.
Taking a look at high scores from metacritic the ps3 is VERY poor. This is what counts, forget the hardware. A silent cool 360 appeals more.
oh and wait wait wait... the forget the hardware. A silent cool 360? Dude, that the fastest about face I've EVER seen, and I've seen the president talk publicly. That's the fastest back and forth... well, ever..
All the AAA games are on the 360 this holiday season, and in the future, it appears. If i liked MGS, that would be a good reason to get one, but other than that, the game lineup just can't compete.
And games are what the damn thing is about. Average punters dont care about HDD space, cell processors, HD players, etc etc.
