Analysts: Halo 3 beta is an ingenious litmus test and nothing more photo

As far as analysts are concerned, the ongoing Halo 3 beta is less of a bug finding necessity and more of a clever way to market blockbuster games. Speaking to Reuters, Michael Pachter from Wedbush Morgan had this to say about the game that helped move over 700,000 copies of the golden ticket to the Halo 3 beta we collectively call Crackdown.

"This public beta is clearly just to promote the game. It's highly unlikely there will be material added to the game because of this."

While the concept of using demos and betas to attract gamers is hardly news to anyone who has played a video game in the past few years, Pachter expands on the notion some more.

"In addition to raising brand awareness of one of the most popular games in Microsoft's arsenal, the Halo 3 beta has the added benefit of bringing in thousands of lapsed Xbox Live players.
Microsoft is masterfully building this. It builds loyalty, it promotes online and most important, it makes loyal customers feel special. It's the beginning of a new trend in the console world."

With the recent announcement that Halo 3 will be available on store shelves in September, the idea that bug fixes are not the real reason behind the sneak peek called the Halo 3 beta might not be much of a reach. For what can only be described as a rare occurrence, I find myself believing what an analyst is preaching from the fiery pulpit of the church of projected misconceptions.

Quick! Somebody summon Captain Obvious and see if he makes house calls. I just might have located a mythical unicorn an aberration in the fabric of the time-space continuum. After all, this guy actually plays video games, unlike a lot of the "experts" out there.

good call Gameboi, the Halo 3 beta is not a beta. Its a hypewagon and an advertisment.

I admit I haven't played the beta, but I know I'm not going to buy it. I'm an average player when it comes to FPS, but when it comes to Xbox Live I get slaughtered. It makes Halo 2 unplayable for average joes like me. And oh yeah, it's total hype. Cap'n Obvious shoulda' been here for that one.

I never liked halo2 either Netik09,my last foray into that type of fps was gears and I was just horrible at that online aswell.I've only been into Clancy games and the such.
So I wasnt expecting much from the beta(I bought crackdown for crackdown)but something made me give it a try.Im no pro but I actually could translate my Clancy-no-jump-for-you run and gunning after twenty or so matches, now I cant get enough!

See Z.O.E or Tobal No 1 for more of this. And if know why off the top of your head a cookie for you.

I got Z.O.E. for Sons of Liberty and Dragon Quest VIII for the FF XII demos. Pachter makes a lot of sense in the realm of dollars and numbers of units moved. It's like X number of games are moved so the companies can gauge how much money to put into advertising and production.

But you don't need a group of analysts to tell you that Halo 3 is going to be a seller.

Spoken like a true analyst that probably has never touched the beta. Anyone who has actually participated will tell you there are problems and bugs that are being found because of it.

I just got my Lieutenant rank in the Beta, and I can't wait for the full version to come out to do it all over again.

But like modifiedbears said, there are plenty of weird quirks that (I hope) are going to be fixed.

BUT if Bungie doesn't change your starting weapon to a Battle Rifle instead of the machine gun, the Beta didn't fix any balance issues, only bugs.

Haven't played the beta, but like a couple have said, i'm guessing they're using it to address the first issues, you know, like starting in version 1.2 instead of 1, with the weapon tweaks and/or bug fixes.

@ jimjo: That's weird, it's supposed to summon ancient Sumerian demons.

The pronunciation is on my profile page actually, but for your and Dan's benefit here it is: Miks-yez-pit-lik. As long as you get vaguely close to that, it's all gravy. It's way easier to just type "Mxy" and pronounce it "Mixie" They've actually mumbled through it a few times on earlier podtoids, I like to think they haven't answered any of my questions lately because it's so obnoxious to pronounce. But deep down inside I know it's really because my questions suck.

Who cares if this is just a ploy, The Halo fans don't seem to be bitching, only the ppl NOT playing the "beta". Halo fans from all over get an early look at a game. PC gamers do it all the time. We get to DL demos months before a game is released, get in on betas for MMOs all the time. Let them enjoy their time with the "beta"...wouldn't you all love to play some early version of the next Mario or Lynk game?

I'm with Netik. Online games rarely appeal to me for the simple fact that, as decent as I am, I just can't touch the people who play on Live. Apart from my one awesome moment of glory when I took on three dudes at once during Gears of War and slaughtered them all, I've never been able to do anything of note. Halo would humiliate me.

A quick google would have probably confused you more, since nearly every incarnation of the character says it differently. mix-yez-pittle-ik, mix-ill-plick, mix-yez-pit-ul-ick, mix-yes-spit-lick... all have been used in the past. You can pretend you were right the first time, because honestly as long as you get close enough it really doesn't matter.

Just use "mixie" :)

beta is the greatest word a programmer has in thier arsenal. it allows you to deliver a product to a select public, and any time something goes wrong, you just say, well... its still in beta. we're working on it.

fucking gmail's been in beta for almost 3 years, its the best web based mail service going. still in beta!

damnit all it is is an early demo. demos get released all the time to promote games. halo is still doing nothing new. im glad im part of the "not using crackdown for halo 3 beta" crowd.

"It's highly unlikely there will be material added to the game because of this."

Except for the stuff they left out.

They were also never shy about this being more of a stress test than anything else, and also said in one of their weekly updates a week or two ago that Halo 3 was feature complete and they were just optimizing. Go figure.

If you are going to whore a game out, this is the best way to do it. I wish all developers *cough cough Square Enix cough* would do this with their games *cough Final Fantasy cough* instead of making 13 version of the same damn game.

Hmm.. Im not sure about that, after all this is bungie we are talking about, the ones who sworn for 2 years they were not making halo 3? these guys are higly unconventional.

Anyway, yesterday some servers were out for a few hours because "tweaks" were being made, also the forums (although filled mostly with clutter) receive attention from bungie reps on certain issues found. Per example the Bubble shield not showing in all screens, and a see-trough part in valhalla. Suposedly those have been fixed.

So.. basically.. IF they are finding bugs and fixing them, then it is a BETA test, right?

Actually isn't that the whole point...garner interest in the game?

I don't see any form for submitting "errors" you might come across. Sure there's probably a thread on the Bungie.net forums for that, but we know most everyone is playing just to get a suckle off Bungie's teat.

Ahem (clears throath)

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=10926404

Some issues submitted there HAVE been fixed during the BETA TEST.

I know is hard to believe but it seems like "Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta" actually is a beta test of some sort.
