Analysts: Could Nintendo make the next major move in the console war? photo

Damn that Nintendo, always coming up with new ways to make us flat broke. If Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has anything to say about it, they'll make us poorer and happier again very soon. In a recent investor note, Sebastian said that the next wave of console hardware would hit before 2011, unless Nintendo makes a key move:

"One possible exception to console timing may be Nintendo, which could opt to upgrade the Wii with faster processing power, DVD capability and/or greater storage."

Yes, Nintendo could opt to do that ... but will they? With the measure of success they've had with the Wii, the company has obviously proved they don't need to be cutting-edge to generate consumer interest. On the other hand, other companies are moving swiftly forward technologically (such as Microsoft, who have recently started work to produce a 65 nm-based CPU for the Xbox 360). It seems it will only grow increasingly difficult to stay behind the curve and achieve success, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo could somehow manage to pull it off.

Sebastian also commented on the PS3, saying that Sony is doing better with the North American market, but that "the PS3 is likely to gain significant market share until hardware prices reach mass market levels."

Do you think Nintendo could step up to the plate a second time and sweep the market before Microsoft and Sony?

Hate to nitpick, but I think the Soft already has the 65nm chips rolled out (Falcon chipset) and will be bring out 45nm chips in the future.

And I fully welcome a new Wii. If they improve on the shortcomings of the current version the console could be excellent.

Can they upgrade the Wii to have good games? How bout a non-gimmicky control system?

Nintendo is in a optimal place but I don't think they're going to roll out a new console soon enough, Unless they wanna give that 3 systems model they tried with the ds back in the day but we all know what happened there.

I don't think we'll see another major action from Nintendo until at least 2011.

Processing power so we can play games with BUMP MAPPING!!! Holy schnikees!!! Realistic textures!! This truly is a revolution!

Daaaaaaang DVDs!!! What will they think of next, some sort of higher-capacity DVD that uses a blue laser or something?!?1

ZOMG STORAGE!!! Like perhaps some sort of spinning magnetic disk that could store larges amounts of data!!! Damn, I always knew Nintendo was all about innovation!

I think 2011 should be the absolute minimum date that a new wave of consoles should be released.
That goes for the Ds lite and PSP.

@ Phantom

Hardware that can actually utilize the Wiimote to its full capacity would be nice too.

DVD playback on a console? What will they think of next?

Nintendo has enough money to buy half the planets in our solar system. I at least HOPE that their next console wont be 3 gamecubes taped together.
How about putting some power into your console, instead of a DVD player that no-one needs?

@Kaspar: Obviously not. Since they figured they don't need powerfull consoles their next one will be two N64s taped together.

No matter what they do, they'll call it innovation and idiots will lap it up.

I think a cost effective external hard drive for the Wii would be nice, but not a whole "new" console before 2011. However, since Nintendo kinda shifted sideways this console cycle its not out of the realm of possibility.

nintendo will fail next generation unless they come out with that mind-control wire helmet thing.

Moms will shit their britches knowing they can play the Wii Fit 2 using only their mind controller, being convinced you can lose weight by exercising your mind muscles.

Mario Typing sequel - Mario Thinking comes packaged with mind controller.

every console will have some motion sensing gyroscopic peripheral.
sony and m$ are way farther ahead in terms of online community.
nintendo will again opt to pussy out and low ball the specs on their system claiming people don't need HD quality graphics yet again or a BluRay drive, therefore creating the cheapest system again.
Nintendon't will port Mario Super Sluggers from the GCN. they wont bring any other games to the table.
Conduit 2 won't be exclusive.
FPS Fanboys rejoice when they know they will be able to simulate teabagging from their couch on their online opponents corpse.
Nintendo's friend codes allow passionate Pog and Sticker trading.

I agree with wutdahackman. Next gen if microsoft and/or Sony release a console with motion sensing controllers like the wiimote I'm done with Nintendo. (love the wiimote, the console is "meh")

The thing is, Nintendo won over the mainstream (thus winning the current console race) by NOT having a DVD attachment or an awesome chipset. Why change the formula now? I think they'll remain gimmicky until their sales drop.

since the wii is at the low end of the console spectrum technologically (motionplus notwithstanding), any changes nintendo could make to it would presumably be upgrades intended to cater to the hardcore gamers, which i think we all know they don't care about. if anything, nintendo would be more likely to simply release the system/peripherals in different colors.

It seems to me that Nintendo is determined to stay one generation behind Sony and MS, from a technical point of view. If this is true, I don't see how a successor to the Wii, likely to be still less powerful than PS3 and X360, could make a difference in the console war.
