"Get excited about games -- not systems." Wise words to live by. That said, I actually prefer Nintendo's naming scheme over Sony and MS (although Wii and WiiU are abysmal). Picking a name and adding numbers to the end for each iteration is lame.
Just don't make the same mistake you did with the PS3, Sony. Judging by the PS Vita I see you're learning (e.g. great library of launch titles, affordable price, "developer-friendly", etc.) basically everything the PS3 wasn't.
I'm fine with this generation of consoles but I know we'll have to move on soon. Still, I may not even grab the next Xbox or Playstation right away anyway so do whatever.

I'm pretty sure the next xbox won't be called the 720. It won't be called the xbox 3 either because it would confuse moms.

But how much of a difference will next gen be? The difference between the ps1 and ps2 was noticeably large, and the same can be said for ps2 to ps3. But are PC games now that much better looking than consoles? Yes they are but by how much?

I think the next Xbox will be backwards compatible with Kinect. They've sold a shit ton of them, so it wouldn't be stupid not to support the current tech in their next console. The next one will assuredly have it packaged with, but MS loves to launch different SKUs, so having one that's essentially just the system and controller that existing customers can add their current Kinects to is almost a given. If they were smart they'd also let people transfer over existing 360S HDDs, but that is far less likely.
I also think they should pay homage to Kinect's code name, since no one really "likes" the name Kinect, and just call the next system the Natal. I could live with the the Microsoft Natal or Xbox Natal. No numbers, please.

The next Xbox probably won't even be called Xbox. Xbox is a name that appeals to people who are really into gaming. Microsoft doesn't cater solely to those people anymore. They will probably name their new system something that will pique the interest of every man, woman, and child... iBox.
Let's see if both of the big dogs can get backwards compatibility right this time. Games look pretty fricking sweet on both systems right now, so I still think it's retarded for a new generation to start sooner than four years...but if you're going to do it, make it cable of running current gen games in higher resolution with lens flares everywhere or something. That way there will be a little more incentive for us compulsive gamers which have to drop a couple o' grand on consoles and accessories each new generation

I wouldn't be surprised if next gen console's controllers have a little built in number/letter pad to ease the entry of the gazillions of bullshit dlc/online pass codes that are sure to be in damn near every single game produced.
I disagree about getting excited about "games -- not systems". We should be excited about new systems. We've already seen everything this current gen of consoles can do. Nothing blows me away anymore. Games are still fun, yes, no doubt about that, but with every new console generation comes revolution.
Gears of War and Uncharted were revolutions this console generation. And now, 5 to 6 years in, all we are getting is sequels. Good sequels, but sequels nonetheless. Nothing is going to come along and take our breath away like the first time we saw Gears of War or Uncharted 2. Nothing. Not just graphics wise either.

I don't think Sony will hit first, they missed it this generation with both consoles and handhelds. The PS3 launch was terrible, and depending on how the Vita launch does compared to all the hype, I'd be surprised to see them jump the gun unless they've got some really good shit ready to go day one.
People bought the 360 because it had just enough well known titles coming in the launch window. DOA4, Elder Scrolls, Perfect Dark, PGR, etc. Sony had absolutely nothing of value at launch, and combined with their horrible pricing structure and all the confusion about BC, it was kind of a mess. Their biggest bullet point was Blu Ray, which at the time wasn't yet a standard thing.
Sony needs to have big launch games for the PS4, I think they're learning they can't sell their consoles based purely on technology specs, they need games to back it up. How do people have soo much time for gaming? I wish I did. Work, online classes, wife and two kids... damn, I took the wrong path. I'm not ready for a new console. I have soo many games I'm yet to play.

Sony may want to move first, but this doesn't make any sense; Microsoft's position was best by begin ahead of the game like before (ignoring the Wii U). Although I think both companies need to give up on the different SKU thing for launches. Customers continue to prove they will pay the price at launch, and having a predictable set of hardware is better for developers.
On my 60GB PS3...I never got any use out of the extra junk it had over the 20GB. Sony needed to save more money than we did...so it was kind of pointless. One product, everyone gets the same stuff, easier manufacturing and sale.
And we should really let go of BC. Just keep your old system and shut up. Besides...they will rerelease it all in 2160p 4D or something stupid like that by then, right? And we'll be all, "Oh yay, I can buy this game for a 2nd, or 3rd time, but this time it's 'better'."

Indeed that last statement. Care about the games, not the systems. I think Dtoid, and other places, say that people buy consoles for the games, not for the console itself... but it sure doesn't sound that way, seeing others wanting a new console already.
