Analyst(s) predict TGS-timed/holiday PS3 price drop [Update] photo

Wait, didn't we just have a price drop?

GamesIndustry.biz reports that an analyst from simExchange says that Sony needs another price drop or pack-in to remain competitive in the North American market.  Analyst Jesse Divnich wants to see either another $100 USD taken off the console or an added-value bundle released to keep Sony competitive with Microsoft. He also believes that this should happen at TGS.

Divinch says "Sony's third party software support could be at serious risk if they allow Microsoft to continue to widen the sales gap."

This sounds like a daydream. Nothing against simExchange or its virtual trading, but another price drop this year (even though the first was more of a clearance) might be a sign of weakness in the eyes of Sony's competitors, and Sony doesn't really have a history of backing down.

Don't get me wrong: a PS3 price drop this holiday would be wonderful, but I expect that Sony is still looking to move PS2 games and systems, letting their better-but-still-not-great holiday PS3 lineup do what it will. I'll stick with Pachter's predictions, which call for PS2 price drops this year, and PS3 price drops in 2008.

[Update: In a Gamasutra article on the same topic, Pachter says that he expects the 80GB system to be reduced to $499 for this holiday season. He also says that Sony could follow that up with another drop next spring. Pachter, make up your mind!]

[thanks, JV]

If it's true, it's quite reminiscent of the rapid price drops for the N64 when it first came out...

I fully expect an 80Gb drop to $499, probably leaning up next to GTAIV and MGSIV. <you like that? yeah IV.

No price drop until the 60GBs are gone. Then, the 80GBs will drop to $500.

At launch, you could buy a PS3 for $500. Two $100 price drops later, you'll be able to buy a PS3 for $500.

That doesn't sound like a price drop to me...

@buck: nobody was complaining about a 500 dollar pricepoint at launch, they were complaining about a 600 dollar price.

Personally, I'd only buy the thing for backwards compatibility (so I'll take any price drop I can get), but I don't see a price drop to be completely out of the picture.
PS2 is still one of the top selling consoles out there to this date. Perhaps a price drop will persuade these PS2 users over time to make the jump to PS3. A PS2 drop is more likely, but a PS3 isn't too far fetched.
Sony's situation still looks grim...

Still waiting for that ZOMG MUST HAVE game for the PS3. So far, not seeing it. Price drops are going to have to pick up the slack.
