Analyst Pachter thinks slimmer Xbox 360 model is a thing photo

Sitting next to my PlayStation 3 Slim, my Xbox 360 looks like it could stand to lose a few pounds. Rumors have been flying for months that Microsoft has its own smaller, lighter Xbox 360 up its sleeves. But that's all they've been -- rumors.

But according to the well-informed industry analyst Michael Pachter, a slim Xbox 360 certainly could be on the way. Microsoft just won't call it the "Xbox 360 Slim," he says, as Sony's already laid claim to a similar moniker.

"I think there is a cheaper version of the Xbox 360 console coming out," he said on GameTrailer's "Pach Attack" web series. "I think it will probably have a different graphics card and processor, and if it does exist they will save around $20 [or] $30 on each unit."

He also thinks that Microsoft wouldn't cut the price on the console, instead bundling it with Natal or a 250GB hard drive. The idea, he says, would be to position Natal as "their future platform."

As usual, this is all speculation -- note the words "I think" and "if it does exist." Pachter isn't saying he knows anything for certain, but the guy knows his business. Perhaps we'll see something revealed at E3, along with the the Natal experience Microsoft is promising.

I don't understand the point of a slimmer home console unless that somehow makes it less prone to hardware failure (doubtful).

I also don't understand the point of Michael Pachter.

I think it will happen. Microsoft has said the 360 is here to stay, and will not announce the successor yet. The launch of Natal really confirms it. I think Microsoft would benefit from a "relaunch" of the console, and introduce a more slim and "modern" version.
Maybe the RROD problem would be fixed, bigger HDD, less noise and get rid of the brick on the power cord. Seems logical.

WOW LOLZ, BECAYSE THE 360 GETS TEH RED RINGS!! I GETS IT

So 2007.

Anyway if Pachter believes this, then it most likely ain't true.

Oh, right. Guess that's never been an issue for me though. It's not like the 360 takes up that much space. My cable receiver is larger.

Why? The 360 is fine as it is, I'd rather have a larger console that circulates air more efficiently, than a slimmer one that looks nicer. Actually, I don't have any issues with the 360's aesthetics, unlike the fat PS3 which has one of the worst I've seen (the slim improved it drastically). I'm pretty sure this slim 360 is complete bullshit, especially since Patcher thinks it to be true.

I'll stick with my current 2 360's, no need for a slimmer one. In my experience, slim devices almost always cause trouble.

I'm much more interested in the devo "cone" hat he has behind him. As for the slimline 360. It would make sense for Msoft to utilize the reduced costs of a slimmer system with the newer chipsets to offset some of what they lose on the older models. If they bundled with Natal I may consider getting one, since I want Natal anyway. If not Ill stick with my Elite.

If Ben Heck thinks it could happen, then it might.

Although the internal HDD makes me think it won't, unless they're ready to go to cloud storage.

I mean, just imagine how much worse the RRoD would have been with internal HDD's.

Microsoft is going to release a version thats cheaper to manufacture and thus raise profit margins?! NO WAI!

This isn't news, this isn't a prediction. Its a fact. They already did this with the Jasper model and the on-board 512 MB memory chips in the Arcade models. Its just a matter of when.

I actually like Pachter. His Pach Attack videos on Gametrailers are surprisingly good and he speaks a lot of sense. Granted not all his predictions are spot on but in the first one he gave a lowdown on his job and how he is involved in the industry and his predictions are really just opinions. He does seem to be a real marmite person though :)

For a guy who makes a living predicting he doesn't seem to know how things work. The problem with the Xbox360 is despite the updates it still has the near same level of failure, if they slimmed the unit down or reinvested profits to accomplish such a thing, they might as well invest in the new generation. I believe about 6mo-1yr after REACH comes out you will start seeing hints towards a totally NEW Xbox period. There is NO sense whatsoever in placing a new processor and graphics in an old SKU because the base devkits will not be functional for that unit.

As for NATAL DEFINITELY not their future platform, what fucking planet is this guy from where he can be in an industry and not know anything? They will probably lower Xbox360 when the new Xbox is in final production unannounced of course as for NATAL I really think they are going to turn Xbox360 into a Wii version of the new Xbox. A cheaper more affordable version with possibly a SLIM version if NATAL takes off, but not a guarantee.

Wrong again, Pachter. Sony hasn't laid claim to any sort of "Slim moniker." The new, slimmer PS3 is just called "Playstation 3."

Given their history of naming their different SKUs Microsoft will probably go with 360 "Petite" or something.

Just the kind of thing that might entice me to buy a 360. I'd consider buying used but after all the horror stories (spare me the "it's not that bad" even if that's true the rate of 360's dying is alarming) of the RROD I think I'd like to buy new but not get wallet raped. So this appeals to me.

Also after the shitty PS2 slims (and hopefully Sony & Microsoft learning from it) they can release a 360 slim that won't have that machines fuck up problems.

The Xbox does need a physcial redesign. Saying "but it's got a new chip and it won't self destruct once the warranty period is up" just doesn't cut it. They need a physically different model to instill a sense of confidence in new purchasers (and they need to prove that the new looking model is reliable over time).
Personally I think a Slim model is a great idea!

@ Mitchell,

Actually, I agree.. it really is pretty unnecessary. I am positive that, for instance with the PS3, they could have made it that slim to begin with. It's not like that's new tech or anything.

It's totally a marketing gimmick. But, people eat it right up, so why not?

Hell, look at the DS. Let's make it big, then small, then big again. Tell me Nintendo isn't made of marketing genius's.

Fact is, the guy is paid to give his opinion. Not only this, but people get mad when he is asked his opinion and gives an answer people don't like. He's a human being, and a seemingly decent one at that.

If you don't like him, just skip past every article that features his name in the headlines. Simple, problem solved, chill the fuck out and go masturbate or something.

I don't think I can rule out the possibility of a slimmer 360 especially bundled with Natal. It just sounds like it could happen. Maybe a case redesign to circulate air better while making it smaller and more efficient. Also, if they made the disc drive it in like the PS3's I'll bet they could save a lot of space.

Oh, there's absolutely a new model of Xbox 360 coming - the motherboard guarantees it. The only questions are if it's just another attempt to fix the stability, or if it will feature a case redesign and a bit of a rebrand ala the PS3 Slim. My suspicion is the latter, if only because moving the GPU seems designed to move the DVD drive nearer the motherboard and the memory card slots are obviously gone.

I'm waiting for it too, as my three years is up at Christmas and it'll only be a matter of time until the next RROD...

They wouldn't drop the price, but instead keep the same price and bundle it with natal?
No i don't think even MS would try to do that, they would atleast keep the option open to buy a 360 without natal... so you'd have one sku with natal and a cheaper one without...

Though really depending on how advanced natal really is, it will be hard for MS to price it at anything cheap enough to bundle it with a 360 at it's current price
The Phazer's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/03/2010 15:14

Oh please - the motherboard would require a massive amount of effort to fake for no good reason, and pretty much every Xbox 360 motherboard in the consoles history has leaked, and there's been not terribly convincing non-denials by Xbox support. The thing is very, very likely legit.

@Wee SK - yeah that's what I was thinking. Since when did quoting what some analyst (there are plenty of them out there) constitute news?

On the console itself I think it'll come out and I think I still won't buy one because it shouldn't have been such a huge, ugly mess of a console in the first place. Don't get me wrong content Xbox owners, I play it plenty at friends' and think it has the best games selection this generation, I just wish it wasn't such a loud, obnoxious eyesaw with a chunky ass controller with weirdly aligned analogue sticks.

Personally I'm just gonna wait it out a little longer till the nextbox and hope it has B/C, this has come to late for me.

The only thing Microsoft needs to achieve with a redesign of the 360's hardware is to lower it's failure rate of 54.2%. It's basically one loud fan with an external powerbrick. I highly doubt it if they're gonna be able to make it internal and come up with a way to slim it down a bit while still using the same chipset etc. Lets hope pachter's right though.
