Oh, those wacky analysts! With Sony announcing the PS3 Slim this past week at Gamescom, plucky analyst David Cole of DFC intelligence believes it's only a matter of time before Microsoft follows suit and announces its own slimmer version of the Xbox 360.

"I think it is a question of when not if," he suggests. "However, the when part is a big uncertainty ... rumors have been going on for a long time.  I think people were asking me the same question last year at this time. As cost efficiencies allow smaller and more reliable is always a good thing. However, you also have something like Project Natal which could also tie in with hardware redesigns.

"There are a lot of questions Microsoft must weigh internally and there are always going to arguments on both sides of the fence around timing. So I don't know, but in our DFC forecasts we anticipated a major redesign in 2010....so I guess that was our bet."

Two other analysts, Tom Greenwald and Arvind Bhatia, disagree with Cole, beliving Microsoft doesn't need to do this, and probably won't. Ben Schachter or Broadpoint AmTech believes that Microsoft will definitely redesign the 360 to tie in with Project Natal next year.

What do you think? Is a smaller, sexier Xbox 360 coming our way? Does Microsoft need to do this? I can't personally imagine them announcing a 360 Slim since the original model is still doing quite well, but you never know. I won't rule it out, I'll just not believe it until I see it.

That analyst is a moron. Natal Xbox is more likely.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I saw that and laughed so hard. I thought it was a joke. A 360 Slim being announced would be hilarious. Reasonable, but after all the PS3 Slim love, it'd be like a very elaborate joke.

A console that actually works would be nice...

If you look at all the internal updates Microsoft have added over the years you could say they've set their stall on making what they've already got working better.

Saying that I'm always down for smaller consoles!

How about a system that doesn't fail half the time? You know, like the original Xbox?

There's not going to be a 360 slim because Microsoft has no real hardware expertise; they're a software company. Microsoft actually benefits from the 360's failure rate in one aspect: it inflates their sales numbers, even though it's likely largely the same people exchanging their faulty 360s with new ones at retail (rather than truly new customers). All exchanges count as units sold.

Yeah, a quieter 360 that didn't fuck up all the time would be welcome. But even then, I wouldn't know whether to get one or whether to wait until MS come up with their next console. Even then, I'd need some guarantees about it's reliability.

this person speaks the truth, more that anything a hardware revision for a X360 would not be about size, but about finally fixing the humongous flaws in design.

I want to become an analyst and get paid to think of random bullshit without any repercussions. Actually, I'm going to take a crack at it right now: After meticulous research and following marketing trends, it is my opinion that Microsoft and Nintendo will not release slimmed-down consoles on their own. Nintendo may release a variation of their Natal platform, but the console will most likely only feature a color change at most. Nintendo on the other hand may release consoles in a variety of different colors when they eventually announce a price reduction, but that is most likely not going to occur anytime soon, if at all." Can I has money now?

That sounds like a great idea. It's not like it doesn't already have an overheating problem. Sometimes analysts show why they're analysts and not developers.

I guess it is ultimately dependent on the technology. The PS3 slim isn't just something that is good for customers, it's good for Sony becase it's cheaper to make. The big thing that made the slim possible was the new 45 cell processor as opposed to the old 60. The new one is smaller and cheaper to make. Likewise, if the chip manufacturer for the 360 shrinks the size of that chip and Microsoft is able to design a smaller CHEAPER 360, there is no reason why they shouldn't make it.

The analysts who say the 360 is doing fine as it are right, but it Microsoft can build a 360 for less (and keep the reliability the same or better) why wouldn't they?

I bought a 360 in 2006. So did most local gamers I know. Since then everyone I've ever talked to on the subject has had their 360 break and need repairs at least once. But in the 3 years I've owned one, I have never once had a single red ring of death. I suspect that someone in shipping probably performed some crazy voodoo rituals on it which keep it from breaking to this day. So the news of a 360 slim, provided that it doesn't break as often, would be great news for most gamers I know. As for myself, I'm sticking with my magical 360.

When I saw the PS3 Slim, my biggest concern about the new design was how it could possibly breathe in there, since the PS3 was pretty packed to begin with. A 360 Slim would probably keel over almost instantly unless there are some major advances made. What the 360 needs now is the option for a bigger hard drive than 120GB, because with all the game installs, large XBLA games, games on demand, and HD content, those things can be filled up all too easily.

It makes sense that at some point Microsoft may want to introduce an entirely new design for the Xbox to resolve the red ring/hardware issues. I think that new buyers and 360 fans alike would be more inclined to purchase if there was a visible difference in the "newly designed" unit that was advertised and designed to be more stable. They did bring out a new chip apparently... but unless people are heavily into the various SKU's... they all look the same and I think new buyers are a little fearful of the rumoured hardware failures.

Slim, fat... whatever... I do think at one point they'll have to introduce a new look...

A 360 slim really isn't a necessary venture for Microsoft. The current 360 (while it occassionally still suffers from the dreaded RROD) is still doing quite well. And Microsoft is always trying to improve it (on the software end at least).

I could see something going on with Project Natal though...

i dont think a slim 360 will be out any time soon if at all they still have to remove that failure rate it redrings because its not even big enough for itself so a slim would only have a greater failure rate

First of all, I'd like to see some proof of all the accusations about Microsoft including the replacements in the number, rather than how many actual sales it has. No offense though Microsoft, you need to work out your hardware problems first and foremost. Also, Microsoft wouldn't be doing the slimming down themselves. They don't make the hardware, third-parties do. Slimming down the already faulty hardware would probably just cause more problems and be a huge slap to the face of people that have gotten the Red Ring. They would have to go through the trouble of pulling hardware companies that makes the power block, motherboard, etc, that the 360 uses to slim down the parts. Not a huge troubling ordeal, but an inconvience at most. What Microsoft does have on their side is their software and excellent Live updates. Those kick ass and they should continue with the new content.

Dont care for smaller,I am more interested in silent, cool, MKV playback and a default HD of 120G at least, and not an expensive laptop drive, a standard eco sata drive would do nicely. Browser and I-Player would be nice too.

Oh, come on. This is getting ridiculous. A 360 on its end takes up less than 3.5 inches. WTF is the big deal about making it slimmer? Making it so that it would stop with the RRoDs and drive errors would be far more preferable!

Can they afford to put less parts into a 360 slim without it destroying itself inside of 5 minutes?
Even if they did, they'd look like plagurists.
Oh wait, that's how they made a name for themselves to begin with.

Smaller box would probably require a different set of hard drives. Bad news. And knowing MS, the thing would probably sound like a jet engine and still manage to overheat.

@Necros: i think that pretty much got covered with the 34% energy reduction which in turn should generate less heat. Still, after seeing so much fail of gadgets and electronics lately (exploding iphones, burning laptop batteries, dying X360, etc) i'd wait a bit to see if any issues arise with this new model.

lmao with a failure rate of 54% at a fat version of the console.. hmm yea right... fix your current problems then you can think about your beloved "slim" you guys dream about in your sleep.. even then with the current components the 360 has inside it'll even lead to more failure rates if they were to shrink it...

Until they get that fixed I don't even want to hear anything about a 360 Slim.

I don't see how this is possible. The majority of the 360's problem with overheating is that there's not enough room in the console for sufficient airflow. IE, it's ALREADY too small for the heat it's outputting. I don't think a Slim unit would be possible with a completely different approach to heat dissipation.

I don't think MS will redesign a slimmer console until they get to the point where they can get the CPU and GPU on the same package. I think the most important selling point Sony has now is the price drop, not the redesign. I doubt people that were previously on the fence would have been sold if they'd released the redesign at the old price. As a side fact, how does the slim look against a 360? Has anyone seen any comparison pics?
