Analyst believes a lot of people bought Modern Warfare 2 photo

The other day a GameStop employee told me that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had the “biggest launch in the history of entertainment.” I didn’t put much stock into what the employee had to say at the time. I was trying to receive a refund on a pre-order because I think three-hour lines are dumb, while he was trying to convince me that MW2 was mad popular and people like standing in three-hour lines. But if analyst Ben Schachter has it right, then the GameStop guy isn't too far off in regards to sales -- MW2 may have sold over seven million copies worldwide its first day at retail.

Seven million, folks. That’s seven million times the amount of copies Lips sold over its lifetime and double Grand Theft Auto IV’s worldwide first-day sales. Speaking of that, MW2 has already doubled GTA IV's sales in the UK which seemed to have an impact on Schachter's estimate.

"With GTA IV selling-through 6mm units worldwide in its first week," Schachter recently said (via Joystiq), "that suggests week one of Modern Warfare 2 worldwide sell-through could approximate ~11.7mm.”

“While 2x the week one tally for GTA IV may seem aggressive, the bottom line is that we believe current consensus estimates of around 12mm for the December quarter may end up being conservative."

If true, this is the accomplishment of week, to say the least. I’m trying to think about all the money that was made on MW2’s release date, but my brain broke while attempting to process the ridiculousness. I’ll have to ask GameStop-dude to break it down for me later.

And a few of them (my self) have had their xbox's GPU fail after twenty minutes of gameplay.

Only 2 of those copies sold are of the PC version.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, not a lot of people bought Jurassic: The Hunted. Can I be an analyst now?

I saw on the Steam stats page that over 100,000 people were playing at once in the middle of the night, which is quite a lot on PC. Left 4 Dead sold like 2 million copies on PC and even at its peak didn't have those numbers of players at one time.

So much for the boycott.

Is it me or can 9 out of 10 of these MW stories use the Captain Obvious pic?

I always wonder who I'm hanging out with when news about a game hits like this and out of ny entire circle of friends, friends of friends, and acquitances I know nobody who has this game even though they all play video games.

@StingingVelvet: Not sure what you mean exactly. Every time I've checked it's been lower than Counter-Strike Source, and that was during the usual peak time yesterday evening. But, even if it did break 100,000 players at once... 7 million copies sold... 100,000 players at peak for PC? I'd say that means the boycott DID work since most of that 7 million is certainly console sales.

If MW2 (PC) can't consistently beat Counter Strike: Source on Steam... then... there's something wrong. Might also explain why IWNet hasn't exploded yet.

@AlexTaldren - MW2 is also consistently beaten by the first Counter-Strike. But having less players than a 10 year old mod doesn't mean anything.

I think IW deserves it, all except the people in charge of the multiplayer because it seems like a bunch of recycled/generic idea's that were thrown in to sound larger then the first game. That and the TPS matches (I don't even wanna know what the hell the cage match is), the 9vs9 (are you fucking me?) limit and the lack of dedicated servers.

Oh and the matchmaking crap means I'll fight my way through hordes of grenade spamming, spawn camping noobs until I got to play exciting matches.

@Skribble: He was just pointing out the exact opposite. It's astounding that a single genre, futhermore a single GAME within this genre can garner so much media and public attention.

It's not that I'm agains war shooters or Modern Warfare series in particular, it's just that I believe there to be WAY more interesting manifestations of this given media out there. Besides, a Eminem-fueled ad was just way too much for me. People complain about the Wii being geared towards succesful adults with a cohese family and see no problem about a game being geared toward a violence-ridden, self-approving culture that lost its social statement fifteen years ago. I'd like to apologize for all rap lovers out there, but I just don't get it anymore. Give me a dose of Tupac or Public Enemy, however, and I'll stay and chat for hours.

No big suprise there. That is an assload of money made from this game. I have been playing multiplayer, and it is very fun. I hate Activision but I can't pass on Infinity Ward's shooter.

"toward a violence-ridden, self-approving culture that lost its social statement fifteen years ago."

I dunno, I think that goes for the music scene in general nowadays, especially considering losing a social statement. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention, but it seems like music/music consumers have less of a stomach for messages and social movement.

At least its a good game. Halo 3 sold like water in the desert and, good Tao, that the most overrated thing evah.
And yes, rap is getting ridiculous( even though i like Eminem ), but when you look at Soulja Boy...aff.

I guessed 10 million in the first week, but 7 million in the first 24 hours? Thats... yeah. 7 million copies. 24 hours. Jesus fucking christ.

@Micheal Brown: agreed. i'm getting a headache. i can't wait until Assassin's Creed 2 comes out so there's SOME other news/reviews/whatever to read. Is there a MW2 filter on destructoid?

Conclusion: MW2 was a well-advertised game. Maybe a well-made game as well, but the high sales are because of good advertising. Publishers and Studios take note.

To be honest, I think it's more down to the success and popularity of the original. Not to mention it's the most amazing story I've personally ever been told, and it's an improved version of the most popular multiplayer FPS (almost said game, but forgot about things like WoW) in the world. Ever. In a million years.

You may not believe me, but apart from this website, i didn't personally see one iota of marketing.

Pretty sure the few million who played and loved COD4 had a fairly big part in this aswell.
