Analyst: 360 owners 'defecting' to PS3 this holiday photo

The Xbox 360 has long been considered the superior option for multiplatform games thanks to Xbox Live integration and the fact that it is, more often than not, the lead development platform. However, OTX analyst Nick Williams believes that things are changing, and that Xbox 360 users are slowly "defecting" to Sony's Black Box o' Blu-ray.

Williams talks about "franchise lineage," which is a fancy way of saying "what platforms people are buying sequels for." The analyst believes that, while Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed were more popular on the 360, their sequels are gaining more traction on the PS3 this time around.

15% of those planning to buy the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed 2 own the Xbox 360 version of the first one, and 7% percent of those who plan to buy the Xbox 360 version own the original game on PS3. Allegedly, the numbers are also similar for Modern Warfare 2. While to most of us, these numbers don't say much, the analyst reckons that it shows a "sizable portion" of these so-called defections.

"The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners," adds Williams.

What do you reckon? Is the PS3 slowly catching up to the Xbox 360 in the third party battlefield, or is Williams reading more into these numbers than he should? Speak your mind!

"Defecting"? Kinda harsh. It makes me feel like Bill Gates will stop being my friend if I buy a PS3, which would really hurt my feelings because we were bros.

I can see the Assassin's Creed II thing happening. But Modern Warfare 2? Probably not. MW2 is very much a multiplayer game, and while there are a select few who don't tend to gravitate toward that multiplayer experience (such as myself), it appears to me that the overwhelming majority of Modern Warfare players are all in on the sequel for the multiplayer. And while the PS3 is an excellent platform, it lacks the kind of multiplayer framework that the 360 provides in the form of Xbox Live.

Isn't MW2 selling 2 to 1 on 360?

That explains why MW2 and AC2 have twice the preorders on 360 at every store around here. And why they get twice as many copies to sell.

Wait a minute...

I've owned the 360 since launch and just recently (within the last year) got a PS3. I've still been buying multiplats on the 360 for the Live funtionality. I did get a couple on PS3 though because my PS3 collection is quite thin.

Uh, isn't MW2 preorders 3:1 ratio 360 over PS3? Rofl@ random bullshit "analyst." People will say anything to make headlines on internet blogs, methinks.

He might be right. I have both, but I tend to get multiplayer games on ps3 because I don't want to pay for online play. (I know Xbox Live is suppose to be better but PSN is good enough for me.) If people switch to ps3, it will probably be due to the slow switch from dvd to blu ray, however long that lasts if downloading becomes the standard. That's my guess.

Defecting? Or simply buying another console? I hate use of terminology that describes buying a console as joining a side.

That kid looks like a young Freddy Kruger. God damn. And I thought I was a weird looking kid.

And yeah, the PS3 still needs to cover a lot of ground to catch up with the 360.

2 to 1, 3 to 1, lol looks like the analyst isn't the only one pulling numbers out of their butts. Kinda like Activision's 4:1 sales over The Beatles that turned out to be bull.

I don't see the PS3 winning in the US anytime soon, but in Europe on the other hand it might get rough for the 360.

Hah, I defected MONTHS ago!
Seriously though, after getting a PS3 I find myself loathe to play my 360. This is mostly because I have a 20 gig HDD for the 360 and a 120 gig SATA drive for my PS3... Plus PS3 let's me backup saves onto a flashdrive (for the most part) and backup the entire HDD and if my PS3 fails I don't have to re-download EVERYTHING to get it to work on my 360 again...
Sigh, the 360 has great games but the console is just set up to FRUSTRATE and SCREW OVER users >_<

as odd as it sounds this might have some weight to it although i don't like the wording. a few of my coworkers and a couple of my friends are planning on buying ps3's this christmas and they both own 360's.

i don't know about purchasing games though.

eh, i was considering "defecting" to a 360 as it seems that it is getting cheap enough that i won't feel too angry if it breaks.

Didn't FIFA 10 sold more copies on the PS3? As 360 owner, now, I firmly believe that the PS3 will end up on second place, this gen.

With both consoles at the same price point, the PS3 is now finally looking to be of a better value with its free wireless wi-fi, Blu-Ray drive/player, the mildly interesting HOME (I haven't tried it yet, so let me hope), and not being charged to play online with other people. Besides that, PS3 versions of fighting games do not require you to purchase an additional controller with a decent d-pad when the Dualshock 3 does just fine as is. I will be buying a Playstation 3 around March or when Dell.com is having a particularly nice deal, like when I got my Xbox 360 for $170 (before I knew about all the extra, critical *stuff* I had to buy to get a decent experience).

This is the case for me. My 360 just died and though I sent it in for repair under warranty, they sent it back to me and said they can't fix it. Selling my 360 stuff and switching to Sony, I guess.

Whos numbers are right? Vgchrtz has Modern Warfare 2, Assassins creed, Dragon Age: Origins and BioShock 2 having more preorders by half on the 360. With Xbox 360-Modern Warfare 2 having 1,063,808 more preoders than PS3. Just over 1Mil. more are going to be sold on the 360.

You're missing the point that you actually must back up your PS3 saves for them to survive a system error, it's a serious pain in the ass.

I buy a lot of big games that I will play for hours on the PS3. I bought a launch 360, it died in 6 weeks. They sent me a replacement. It died right after the warranty expired (before they extended it). Paid for my second 360. It lasted quite some time, then croaked. I now have the replacement, and am petrified it's time grows short. So I try to buy all the multiplatform games on the PS3. My PS3 is a 60 gig original, and it just won't die. That's my only reason for buying more PS3 games than 360 ones.

I had a system error awhile ago and didn't actually lose anything...
However, with my 360 after the first one went RROD I also lost the HDD >_<
Not saying that both of those things happen to everyone, but that's been my experience and that's why after Mass Effect 2 I'm not sure I'm gonna get anything for the 360 until Mass Effect 3...

"change is good, you go first".

i expect the ps3 to over take the 360 by late spring/early summer when sony has ff13, gow3 and gt5 out in all regions and microsoft just has halo:reach around, i also expect microsoft to release halo:reach around earlier because of this.

sony can do it unless president Obama tries to do a hostile takeover of the games industry, like he's been doing with every other industry. fuck the government.

also, cocks!

I "defected" before it was cool. I wasn't choosing a side, I just like the PS3 better and when I saw that almost every game that was "exclusive" came to the PS3 later I just decided to switch over. It was the hardware problems that did it for me.

In the end though, who gives a shit, right? Pick the one you like and play games.

i own a xbox and i played till last year when i bought a ps3 ever since then i just don't seem to want to play on the xbox,
one of the main turn offs is its so damm loud unless u install which i cant since its already full but also i grew up on ps1 and ps2 so controller just comes more natural to me

as for xbox live being better i really don't think that is really true more of a myth since all games are p2p on both consoles either way i cant really say i see better performance out of any game on xlive anyway that's just my opinion i am sure many disagree

i have and enjoy both consoles, but any cross platform games i always go (and can see no good reason anytime soon for switching) xbox for the following reasons

1) far better online experience on Live (wah if you cant afford the 3-4 dollars a month)
2) far better user interface (sony's ps3 UI after a million firmware updates is still appalling)
3) better controller
4) better community
5) IRL friends active on live 6 - on psn, 0.0

sony should be thankful for the few worthwhile exclusives they have (demons souls, uncharted 2, valykria chronicles) - besides them my ps3 collects dust as a game system and is used exclusively for blu-ray from netflix :)

that's just a % of the ass creed 360 owners who answered that survey. I don't know how they found those people but it's probably not a significant number.
Companies always do this, throw pointless numbers around that are 'true' but without revealing the methodology on it, it's impossible to judge the weight of their conclusions.

It's possible I guess that lots of 360 owners have picked up a PS3 slim recently and want to buy something for the new shiny console.

If I didn't already own a 360 (in addition to PS3), I certainly wouldn't be in the market to buy one. That's not the same way I felt when the PS3 first came out though.

Play whatever console or consoles have the games you want to play. For me, that was initially the 360 and that has since changed.

I'm slowly moving to get rid of my 360. I'm just not a fan of a segregated "premium" service you need to pay for to enjoy basic aspects of a game online. That, and I don't really care for 360's exclusive titles. Only reason I bought the system was because the PS3 was extremely expensive and unappealing when I picked up my 360 in Nov. of 2006.

Last time I buy a console so close to a launch.
