An update on Xbox 360 social networking family settings photo

It seems the new dashboard update, which isn't available to everyone just yet, has been getting some flak from those under the age of 18, and rightfully so. The joy of using Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm on an Xbox 360 cannot be experienced by these youngins.

As Major Nelson puts it on his blog, "We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access."

"In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18."

Their intentions were good, but when it comes to something like this, consumer choice reigns supreme. Thankfully, an update due out in "several weeks" will give parents the option to enable these new apps for XBL members between the ages of 13 and 17. Sounds good to us.

Oh yeah! im one of those people who cant use these features and I was really lookin forward to them. When I got into the preview i was psyched to use Last.FM and Facebook but then found out since I had a child account, I was outta luck (just like everything else). Hopefully this will push microsoft to allow child accounts a few more options in way of downloading from the xbox site and downloading mature rated demos.

otherwise the angry mom fox news nothing-better-to-do brigade will find another slam against our videogame machines causing kids to have sex with old sweaty men.

The updates seem like a pretty cool idea. Can't wait until I get to use them.

I like being 18, now I can buy porn and alcohol and sell it to twelve year olds for twice the price.

at least somebody is thinking of the children. Facebook can be so evil.

If no one under 18 uses Facebook on their 360's, will there be anyone who uses Facebook on their 360's?

Seems like you've disallowed your main audience for the service.

As if they would allow an under-17 gold account to DL an M rated demo? Yeah, that wouldn't cause a shitstorm in the least, would it now?

I understand wanting to try all of the "cool" games, but please realize that your wish would spell doom for the rest of us who have already paid their temporal dues.

And yet my child account can download the lost and damned no problem, but when it comes to free m rated content I can't, I don't think its about a shitstorm, more like money-storm.

How many sub-18 Live subscribers don't already have access to an actual computer? Half a dozen?

Honestly, I don't see why XBFB is a big deal. Compared to accessing FB from a PC or iPhone, it's 3x slower and 1/3 of the functionality. If anything, it'll just make your gamerscore and achievement-obsessed friends that much more annoying.
