An 8-bit Wii glitch ... ouch

3:37 PM on 12.27.2006   |   World Famous

Yes, even with our advanced alien technology, it seems that we cannot fix glitches in games that are more than 20 years old. Prepare yourself, for there is an 8-bit glitch on the Wii's Virtual Console. Super Mario Bros., you have won again. Will your evil ways ever come to an end?

That's no glitch. Thats the end result of far too many mushroom stompings.

We.. we all understand that the Virtual Console is, in essence, licensed emulation, correct? We're paying for ROMs, and trying to rework archaic code to update stuff is a Pandora's box that I don't think Nintendo wants to open. They're going to be as buggy as they were when first released, so let's not party like it's 1986.

That being said, Summa, one thing you've been looking for -- online multiplayer -- would be as simple as updating the VC 'channel' to incorporate the same Netplay protocols that Nesticle and ZSNES have been using since 1999. *That* is something I take issue with, because it doesn't require editing the ROM at all.

Heh. Nesticle. It still makes me giggle like a school girl.

Come on guys, be serious. You all complain that the VC games are exactly the same as b4, so nintendo bring you changesand you complain some more! This is much better than world -1!

PJ, as I understand it, this is not a new glitch. Glitches in emulation typically manifest as freezes or blinks, not so much an altering of the workings of the game. I'm pretty sure that this particular glitch is already documented.

Oh I get you, btw did you used to program games or something, or was that just based on logic and common sense?

Well, if it's confirmed as true emulation, and even glitches work right, we know that any games that Nintendo (or 3rd party hackers) throw at it will work as intended, unmodified.

I've dabbled, but nah, not really a programmer. Thing is, lots of glitches in games -- likesay, when the Katamari falls through the ground in the middle of a round -- happen as a result of hard-coded error, not so much the hardware (or, in emulation's case, the software) that's actually running the code. When code fucks up, sometimes textures can go away, or clipping goes wonky, or maybe a voice doesn't play when it's supposed to. When hardware (or emulated hardware) fuck up, there's typically only one thing that happens: everything stops. :)

From a dude named Nedroid -- the avatar is a graphic he made especially for me, for my old gaming blog, www.captainwaycool.com. He's an amazing (AMAZING) artist and funny as shit to boot.

is anyone aware of whether or not this is an ORIGINAL glitch that occurred in the cart itself? since the VC is basically emulation of ROMs then any and all problems the original cart had on the original hardware, the VC will have too.

i dont know about this one either way, but i would not be surprised if this is simply an error that occurs in the game "naturally" and the VC is just faithfully emulating both the hardware and the cart, faults and all.

I'm just glad I don't have to blow on the Channels screen to make Super Mario boot up.

A lot of those older games didn't have so many bugs. When things were done in pure assembly and game design was simpler, fewer problems arose.

I'm more concerned about design issues. Many of those old games don't age well, and some [optional] touch-ups would be much appreciated.

But, I assume they want to make money on "free" ROMs before they start selling the enhancements, and then, eventually, we may start to see, y'know, new stuff. Original games is the whole point of next-gen, isn't it?

Lol!! Thats not a glitch!! The game is "tintiau"!!!

[Tintiau = Puertorrican description for glitched games that when trying to play show some odd behaviour because have dirty connectors]

All the guy needs to do is to take out the cartridge, blow some air with pressure with the mouth in the connectors and VOILA! It will work like magic!!

Well you would have to admit that the wii is better than the xbox360. I am not a gamer myself but I am married to a hard core gamer and he is going to get the wii instead of the 360.
