[Update: The Kickstarter page is now live!]
Among the Sleep has been part of my feverish dreams ever since it was announced so many months ago. You play as a two-year-old child, navigating a world that is fueled by the overactive imagination of an infant, or possibly by something more malevolent. It's the kind of bold horror game that only PC developers are currently making.
Well ... if they get the Kickstarter money.
Yep, Among the Sleep is the next game to try its hand at the crowdfunding lark, developer Krillbite hoping to finish the project with help from the community. The team wants $200,000 to finish production on the title -- the core of it is finished, but the developers work part-time jobs to keep themselves alive, and want to be more devoted to the project.
If successful, Among the Sleep will be available by the end of 2013.
The whole crowdfunding thing is becoming a tumultuous subject, especially as some fundraisers turn out to be quite not what they've seen. Destructoid's making a concerted effort to be more discerning in the Kickstarter projects it talks about, and Among the Sleep is a game I personally feel confident in highlighting.
Not only is the core concept tantalizing, providing the kind of creepy horror game we just don't see in the mainstream market, I can verify Among the Sleep definitely exists as I've played it in its alpha form. At least the first moments of it. It's atmospheric, it's intriguing as hell, and I want to see more of it. This is one of those projects I really feel good about supporting.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for this one, both for its financial and creative success. I want this game to happen, and I want this game to be good. It's got the promise -- it just needs the follow.
The Kickstarter project is due to go live today.
