American McGee's Little Red Riding Hood is OMG photo

American McGee will be at GDC in order to pimp his new concept, Little Red Riding Hood. The famous game developer has released some artwork to give a flavor of his new project, and it's looking pretty damn tasty.

"[The artwork] depicts a scene from a game concept I'll be pitching at this year's GDC," explains American, whose name sounds ludicrous without the McGee part. "If we're lucky, an interested publisher will help us move it into production. It's an idea that [Spicy Horse art director] Ken Wong and I have been toying with for years."

Not enough games feature girls chopping the crap out of wolves, so I hope somebody bits at GDC and makes this a real thing. What about you? Is Little Red Riding Hood looking hot, or have you had enough ironic fairy tale gaming for now? All I know is that she's cutting a wolf's head off and that is OMG.

I hate to say this, but this kind of thing seems kind of cliched by now. Taking children story and making them really dark.

And what's this about Mcgee now? I thought that dude a couple years ago decided to live in China or something making a rickshaw racing game. Weird...

I hate how American McGee tries to hit people bluntly over the head with a darker take on an already dark story. You know, like he's the first person ever to ever notice the subtext. That's why I didn't like Alice either; you can't add to what's already there.

Let's just hope that if this game tells you to stay on The Path, that it doesn't later try to be a pretentious dick about it.

I enjoyed AMG's Alice, so this looks interesting.

Sure, it's no Heavy Rain, but it's an interesting concept.

I love fairy tales, the original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol is my favorite story of all time, I enjoy different takes on fairy tales, but I can't remember the last time Mr. McGee made a good game.

Say what you will about cliches and making fairy tales dark, Alice was a damn good game. It was fun, and the atmosphere was definitely there. Granted, that was 10 years ago, and McGee hasn't made a "good" game since.

@Chronic Logic: perhaps you should back off the pipe for a second to clear your head. Little Red Riding Hood was not always a children's story, and even the Disney-fied version has adult themes.

And something doesn't automatically become cliche just because it's been done before. Are war games cliche? Is Civ V cliche? How about space SHMUPs?

Alice was okay, but McGee seems like a broken record. Why does he keep trying to make fairy tale games? Why doesn't he make an original story? His own ideas would be nice, instead of just making someone else's "darker."

Besides, this story's kind of been done to death.

@ Chronic Logic: alot of the fairy tales have been done over by disney or other franchises etc over the years to look calmer than there original half....

Take Cinderella...one of the ugly sisters chop a bit of her foot to get it in the shoe XD

or the Snow White and The Seven Dwarves when they raped snow white...Wait. What!
lol I kid about that part, but the originals are dark!

besides that I can't wait to see this game :p

Both McGee and Burton created something cool at one time (Alice, Edward Scissorhands) but their names really hold nothing of quality in them. Grain of salt time.

I don't know. Alice in Wonderland is a long story with a lot of characters, events, and environments. It lends itself well to making a video game out of it. Little Red Riding Hood, on the other hand, is very short and not nearly as interesting. I don't know how you'd make an entire game from that concept.

@D-503,

Bad Day L.A. and Scrapland. So, that sort of pokes a hole in your theory.

But he also was in charge of creating the levels in Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Final Doom, and cowrote Timeline.

@ all,

What's with all the hate on Mcgee? The guy is actually trying to give us something a little different and people like Chronic Logic say it's cliche? Of all the developers to call cliche... really hard to imagine this is one of them.

Maybe you don't know what the word cliche means?

I loved "Alice" and a Little Red Riding Hood game in this style would be well accepted for me. Although there've been so many violent games based on fairy tales, and that makes me think that this idea is no longer a "Wow" as it was in the beginning of this decade.

y'know, even if the concept is cliche I won't care if it's been done to death if I end up enjoying it.
Plus this is the guy that revisited Alice and despite what others thought I enjoyed the game and it's twisted take on it.

more to the point, who cares if "everybody's jumping on the bandwagon" you still enjoy a good burger when it's GOOD, right?

Yeah the whole "skewed fairy tale" schtick is tired and half the time isn't done well. I'm not just talking about video games. There are plenty of parody fairy tale books, references in cartoons and too many movies featuring a sass-talking Red Riding Hood.

I have to agree that this seems like low-hanging fruit for McGee. Maybe if he just took the whole Red thing out of it and just made it an original story about a little girl hacking up wolves? Really though, he should just leave the story alone. If I want riding cap in a darker capacity I'll just read Angela Carter. Also, lol at this discussion rising up around a single piece of warcraft-looking concept art. I agree though. That painting looks like a kick-ass video game.
