AMD kills the ATI name for their cards and chips photo

Man, that's kind of sad. I've had ATI stuff in my PC rigs for a long time. And remember the ATI logo on our GameCube systems? It's all over now as AMD, owner of the popular graphics accelerators and technology line, has decided to pull the plug on the ATI brand. After 25 years the name will disappear from their products. The company cites the higher consumer awareness of AMD over ATI. That's debatable. Or not. They'd know better than I.

"[The] combination of AMD and Radeon actually proved to be a stronger combination than ATI and Radeon in the minds of processor-aware consumers, by a statistically significant amount," says marketing VP John Volkmann.

The cards will keep the "Radeon" name, but you will no longer see that red boxed logo on their products. The 6000 series of Radeon cards will be first to drop the branding.

they wanted to do it for a very long time. and i'm ok with that, even though i love ATI logo more than the AMD one. I understand that having one brand is simpler for the company and the consumers.

Crazy daisy!

I've never owned an ATI card but I do think my next card will be "AMD" as my Nvidia card has cused some insane issues in games.

I'd really have to agree that this is debatable. I feel like ATI has become somewhat of a household name -- getting up there with Intel. I doubt it any of my family knows what AMD is.

i've studyed marketing and their claims makes a lot of sense

also, as ATi>nVidia but Intel>AMD it might help at the AMD brand to be asociated with the great quality of their GPUs

I would think that the Radeon moniker is more popular than ATi and I've seen plenty of case badges. It hasn't changed anything too much really, they are just going to be PR wise under one brand.

Until my latest card (ATI Radeon HD5850) I've always had Nvidia cards (well matrox, 3dfx etc before) but the ATI logo has been around since I began pc gaming and it will be odd to see it change.

I completely disagree however with the statement that AMD is now synonymous with radeon cards. Myself and friends always refer to them as ATI cards however it will have no effect on the gfx card I select next time.

@Nitex I decided to get mine due to it being one of the few cards to support DX11 at the time and in fairness their drivers are much better than the horror stories I've read in the past.

These days I wouldn't let the chipset supplier sway my choice but just look at the raw price/performance ratio, benchmarks and warranty.

Don't forget to mention the AMD Fusion technology which is the red headed step child created from this union. With the oncoming exposure to cloud gaming (onlive, gaikai) this is really going to save AMD's asses

Only ATI card I ever owned was an all-in-wonder 128, it sucked, I've gone with nvidia ever since 1999. On the other hand, the best CPU I have ever owned was an Athlon XP 2800+. This comes down to personal experience and preference, but I rate AMD as a brand over ATI as a brand. Still sticking with nvidia for my cards though.

It makes sense to do this, though I will miss the ATI brand.

Think about it this way, if you have a laptop with an intel sticker, it will also have either an AMD or Nvidia sticker for the graphics. Consumer logic will think that two stickers of the same brand will mean better compatibility/performance, so those laptops bundled with AMD cpu + AMD gpu will sell more than other possible combinations.

Maybe with this AMD will finally make a profit. They have been leaking billions most quarters over the last few years.

I run an AMD-heavy rig (mobo, proc, vid card), and I have to say, when I hear "AMD", "video card" does not spring to my mind at all. I know ATI is owned by AMD, but I still differentiate AMD as processor and ATI as Radeon cards.

Either way, the name change doesn't bother me. I'm too busy being apprehensive of the potential future Atlus business

I usually don't care about corporate and branding drama, but really... Consumer awareness is one thing, but *positive* awareness? Both AMD and ATI were more or less always followers of a stronger competitor, but I do believe ATI has a better reputation. AMD often came off as a kind of cheap imitaion. I mean, look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Devices#IBM_PC_and_the_x86_architecture

In any case, I always picked AMD and ATI over Intel and Nvidia whenever I had a choice, and I guess I'll continue to do so.

I love ATI graphics. While nVidia is too busy doing dumb 3D graphics, ATI gave me 3 monitor Eyefinity. I love my 3 monitors being duct taped together. Eyefinity <3

Now about the name change, when I think AMD, I think shitty processors. Phenom series sucks, compared to i7s. Before all this name changing, it was easy for me to say that I hate AMD, and people knew I was thinking processors not video cards. But now thats not the case.

This seems a bit of an odd thing to do. My brother and I have used ATI cards for about 5-6 years now for a number of different systems, and we always called them ATI cards instead of AMD cards.

Maybe it's due to the backlash for the HORRENDOUS drivers they've released recently. 10.7 anyone?

Note to AMD: This won't make you drivers suck any less.

ATI has done downhill since AMD bought them out and ran both the processors and video cards into the ground. People can bitch about nvidia for 3d all they like... Nvidia's drivers are still far more stable than any code ATI has managed to scrap together for a last minute release.

I'm on a HD 4890 right now and I can guarantee people my next card will be nvidia again. I still remember my old ATI Rage 128 Pro, Radeon 9600, and x1950 Pro but the company has lost me since the HD 2000s bombed. The HD 4890 was good for the money but I still can't upgrade my drivers due to borderlands issues.

Drag, I've known ATI for about fifteen years, and have tended to buy more ATI than Nvidia.

Also, ATI was a Canadian company, bought by an American one, and a few years later they even kill the name. Typical.

Well, maybe one of the next gen consoles will come with an AMD video card. Correct if I'm wrong, but these consoles all have ATI videocards: PS2, Gamecube, Wii and Xbox 360.

For me it's been a while since everytime I get to download new drivers I find strange having to go to AMD's website.

I guess I'm one of the evil consumers who thinks Radeon --> AMD. Oh well, it's kind of sad to see a recognizable tag die off at any time anywhere, but I suppose it makes sense as the whole ATI/Radeon thing could confuse potential consumers as to their source and whatnot.

Good luck, AMD! Still liking my 5770 as a workhorse although your single-slot 5770s are making it look like it's viciously gangbanging my mobo.

To any ignoramus, Nvidia makes a consistently better graphics card. No argument can be made about that. My last ATI card was in 1998 and it ran Unreal really well, but these days the money goes to Nvidia, because it's better

I don't really get all of these "ATI are shit" comments. ATI started putting out good cards after nVidia fucked up on the geforce5 series of cards. The 9800 Pro was a great card back in the day, outperformed the equal level nvidia cards at the time. I'll agree that ATI was horrible back in the Rage Pro days, but they put out good stuff now. I'm not a fanboy or anything, I had a geforce 8800gt for a while that never gave me any problems either. Maybe I've just been lucky with my ATI cards, I also research what I buy and don't get budget line cards.

"Ati is better because it's better. Fuck proof, I'm right."

See I can make stupid comments too. Doesn't change the fact that while the performance advantage goes back and forth between ATI and Nvidia depending on the card, ATI always screws up on the drivers. Some game always has massive issues with a driver release, open GL support has been absolute garbage forever, and ATI frankly doesn't care. Anyone remember the HD 2000s and their drivers?

At least the positive thing about all this is that there's just 1 brand I can avoid buying instead of two brands to watch out for.

ITT: A bunch of whiny people who don't know what the fuck they are talking about. AMD and ATI have always been pros at what they do. They have always been fierce competitors of Intel and Nvidia and usually on top of their game. Anyone suggesting "ATI graphics cards suck" or "i7 is better than Phenom" obviously has little or no experience or hasn't even looked at any benchmarks.

Sorry kiddies, but there are facts and then there's the stupid shit that comes out of your mouths.

nVidia engineers only started to move their brains after ATI released Radeon 4800 series. There was a time, when 4850 was the best graphic card (by performance and price) in every segment (taking 1,2,3 or 4 cards in Cross-Fire) vs anything nVidia could throw at them. And it took a looong time for green-guys to go back on that horse (although they had very strong marketing and got some help from low quality ATI drivers, so they were still able to sell "new" cards). Now they go head to head, but it took ~2 years, but considering AMD/ATI strength in making new things they most probably will never feel comfortable enough to fool around and resell old technology with new numbers on it.

I don't get the hate toward ATI cards. Running a 5770 right now, first ATI, couldn't be happier. Will miss the name, and I don't think this is a good move by AMD. ATI's reputation is on an upswing. AMD's is at the very best holding level, but IMO has been gradually declining since the Athlon 64. Maybe since Athlon XP.
