AMD and its arch rivals have been duking it in the field of CPU dominance for years. Back in the day, you could reel off a number like 1.8 or 2.2 GHz and proclaim your rig was "better" than your mate's. With the invention of dual core and then quad-core processors, just getting a "faster" processor didn't seem to be that important.
That being said, I was really interested to see this attempt by AMD to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest frequency for a CPU, using one of the new FX processors. AMD invited some overclocking experts to Austin and proceeded to break the previous record of 8.309 GHz with the aid of a little liquid nitrogen. The participants started by booting from BIOS and simply increasing clock speeds as far as they could. It's impressive stuff considering they're just pumping liquid nitrogen onto the board using a custom heatsink.
Overclocking is something that is simultaneously appealing and terrifying. I've been considering having a water-cooled system in my next rig but that's mainly to reduce noise rather than increase performance. That being said, if one of these overclocking boffins wants to come over and put some liquid nitrogen in my PC, I'm all for it. Maybe then it'll run Crysis.
That looks amazing, I want to see a mr. freeze themed rig submerged in liquid nitrogen though. I know it'd probably cause the whole thing to die, but it'd still be a sight to see.
@somailian
That's funny, considering the basic parts and firmware... your console is a stripped down PC. You may now tape back together the broken fragments of your mind.
@Ricardo - Do people actually argue about that? There's more important things to life than that, like telling console gamers their systems are totally inferior and stuff!
@AkimboBFGNinja
They didn't even need to try. RROD anyone?
@salamagogo
Make that 5.
There's a bit of finesse required for fine-tuning CPU overclocks, but it really depends on the chip. I wouldn't be surprised if AMD went through a few hundred chips to find the golden nugget. Now if the vast majority can hit like 6GHz on air, then we're talking.
Clock speed is still pretty important for gaming, more so than than going beyond four cores, at least at this point in time.
One thing I really like about AMD is how they do the extra things to support gaming. An AMD Black Edition unlocked CPU makes overclocking as simple as pie, especially with the utilities they provide.
No, just no. There's a HUGE difference in that case. The only reason why you would need a CPU that fast is if you were doing video rendering among other things that I can't think of.
@zhadoba
You're cooling through the nitrogen evaporating into a gas, you can't contain it. It's a consumable that you'd have to constantly be refreshing.
Is this really what PC guys are going to point to to claim PCs are superior? There's the independent programmers, games that live on for decades, mods that have become phenomenally successful retail products, and you want to use THIS as proof PC gaming is better?
@ Mechman I see. Should have watched video first hah. Yes, i assumed it was submerged somehow which is the way certain Mri scanners work. Passing 730a through miles of titanium wire continuously with little voltage is only possible submerged in liquid helium.
because making our cpus faster then a console makes us PC gamers better.
the things like fugly duckling said are what makes pcs better the consoles. the stuff like if i wana play an old classic i dont have to go dig up my n64 i can just do it. mods the ability for any one to make a game. not the stupid shit like what can make our cores run faster. hell half the time games have issues when ur rig is over clocked.
Okay people, seriously. PCs have had the potential to be limitlessly better than consoles spec-wise ever since consoles have been conceived. Stop pointing out the obvious.
As for actually which is preferred, that's personal preference, stop going all Christian on others trying to convince them that their preference is "wrong."
I don't believe that this one event is what PC guys are claiming the reason PC gaming is better. It's probably the fact that we can get more out of our system without upgrading. While having a liquid nitrogen/helium system wouldn't be practical, you should still be able to get the octa-core processors at 5+GHz on air coolers alone, which is incredible(depending on how well the cores process data).
The new processors coming out like, Bulldozer and Ivy Bridge(even sandy bridge/SB-E) are literally overkill for a lot of games at the moment, so buying one now could ensure almost not bottlenecking for years to come. Hell, even a 4+GHz overclocked Q6600 from 2006 is still a considerable choice for gaming. The new processors are mainly for rendering and benchmarking enthusiasts, or people in need of a dire upgrade.
This one is very nicely written and it contains many useful facts. I am happy to find your distinguished way of writing the post. Now you make it easy for me to understand and implement expressed. I really like to appear back over a typical basis, post a lot more within the topic. Thanks for sharing…keep writing !!!

Wow, 40 comments and 35 of them are talking about PC vs. Consoles instead of the fact that AMD GOT A PROCESSOR OVERCLOCKED TO 8.429 GHz!!!! Destructoid is getting pathetic.
Props to AMD, that is a gigantic leap, I want one of the new FX Vision chips, but I think I am going to hold out on the Bulldozier chips later-this-year/early-next-year
They do run liquid helium on it, they started out with liquid nitrogen and after it became cold enough, they let it boil out and put in liquid helium so it can get to about -230C.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Oh dear... Good joke!
But then I apologize and give it a hug and everything's better again.
Where's that truck from terminator 2 when you REALLY need it?

NOW RELEASE BULLDOZER ALREADY! my Phenom is almost dead :(
So your chip can compete with the competition in Gaming Performance?
Overclocking is for tools.
Come at me.
...Yeah and also why would you ever need no more than 10 GB HDD?... When having just 1 GB is more than enough.
RIGHT!?

This is where PC's owns you console fucks
Chill.
with 8.4gig PCs should be able to emulate original xbox box games :D
Stop overcompensating and grow a dick already.
It's one thing to be "technically" superior to a console. It's a completely different thing to be a gigantic prick about it.

Damn kids.
This is 8 cores at 8.429GHz. Not a single core.
