Amazon: Six feet of space needed to play Kinect photo

According to online retail behemoth Amazon, Microsoft's Kinect contraption will require six feet of space between the player and the TV in order to be enjoyed. The amount of space needed for Kinect has been at the center of some hot debate, and as far as we can tell, this is the closest we've come to confirmation on the issue.

"You'll need any Xbox 360 console, a Kinect sensor, Kinect games and 6 feet between you and your television for play space," warns the retailer.

The space issue is not mentioned on the official Kinect checklist provided by Amazon, but is listed on the system's pre-order page. If you've got a tiny apartment or you keep your gaming consoles in a poky little bedroom, then you might want to skip Kinect. Mind you, I'm still thinking people with taste might want to skip Kinect, so it the space issue might not even matter.

I hope they get sued for having four people playing Kinect simultaneously in that ad - that's misleading advertising.

Well, it's official. Kinect is officially incompatible with my crappy 1 bedroom apartment. I guess I'll have to get out of my lease and find a bigger place if I want to get in on the fun with games like Kinectimals and Kinect Adventures.

I'm not one to moan about the 'casuals' encroaching on out turf, so it's not that I don't see the appeal in motion control; but I seriously fail to see who Kinect is for, the 'casual' crowd Microsoft is so desperate to court are all perfectly happy with Wii Sports, the 'core' gamers who are interested in motion controls will likely prefer the physical buttons of the Wii and Motion Plus or the extra graphical power of the PS3 and Move. I fail to see who Kinect is for... and the more we find out about it; the hit in processing power, the seriously lacklustre launch titles, the 2 person limit and now this I fail to see the audience for Kinect for Xbox 360... now Kinect for PC, yeah I'd be all over that.

This was beautiful.

Also, I HAVE 6 feet of space in front of my TV, but I don't fucking want Natal. Mwahahaha.

Despite having 6+ feet space, I always sit like 3 feet from my 42" TV, CONTROLLER in hand and will continue to do so with my PS Move, while i play REAL games like Socom, killzone 3, Gran Turismo and giggle at how i'm done with Eyepet but Xbox fools are spilling jizz about fucking kineticectimalimals, or whatever.

Guys, don't worry about having 6 feet of space or spending $150 on this shit. it's got noe gaemz anyway.

Kinnect - $150
Big living room - $10,000
Wii knockoffs - $40 each
Replacement Xbox - $150 each time it dies
LIVE fees - $50 per year (because online gaming is a luxury you don't deserve with your console)
REAL GAEMZ with motion control - Priceless (well, the cost of a PS3 and a move kit)

The average male height in the uk is 5foot 9 inches. I have quite a small living room (13ftx13ft) but I know from experience (playing game whilst drunk and falling asleep on the floor) that 6ft really isn't that much space. To read some of these comments it sounds like a lot of people are living in cages.

@ Bakewell I live in san francisco and I can tell you that the average apartment here doesn't have 7+ feet in it (6feet in front of the television + the television) let alone enough room for a couch or somesuch behind it. we have 4, maaaaaybe 5 feet- all I know is that I am 6' and I can't lay down between the couch and the tv

So, you have to be a minimum of 6 feet away. That's probably not factoring in height/ size variations if the camera needs to capture you in the full frame. As a gadgetophile I'm trying really, really hard to find something positive about Kinect. But with each passing day and each - disappointing - piece of news, it's becoming very difficult. Coupled with the "promise" to see "core" titles on the new interface in EIGHT-TEEN MONTHS, you have to wonder if even MS gives a shit anymore.

Either that or they've completely lost touch with their consumer base in pursuit of "the casual"; which, sorry to break it to you MS, already have a Wii. Same could be said for Sony too, but at least there are a few core titles playable at launch and patches incoming for existing software - Heavy Rain, RE: 5 Gold. Plus, I already have the PS Eye from Eye of Judgement, so just $49 bucks for me to try out Sony's version at motion-control. (Though I'll probably cave and get a sub-controller if it's fun). That's $90 (wand + game - Sorcery, probably) vs. $150 for a camera with no games that might entice a purchase for 18 months.

You should make that guy the face of Kinect. I mean, just what the hell is he doing? Advertising a new Kinect weenis enhancer? A doctor checking for breast cancer? A rapist?

By the way, they forgot to mention stable flooring as it seems to me that jumping is mandatory, at least from all those pictures anyway. Don't be surprised if there's a rise in building collapses in November. Also, shouldn't they have included an anti-lawsuit carpet on that checklist? It's going to be needed.

@epic-koryuken - Actually I do. It's fucking awesome! The trophies are seriously hardcore - but add me, you'll see I have a couple. (Foolishbean69)

Luckily they fixed all the issues that made people say "this game sux" before it came out over here (UK). It's a rock solid, rock hard, seriously hardcore tactical shooter. Waiting out a round when you die is a rare treat which casual console shooters have kinda killed off, adds so much more tension.

Although i play far more MAG these days, I used to play confrontation a fuckload until MAG came out.

The only thing i don't like about it is that i bought it on blu-ray rather than DD, yet it requires the same amount of HDD space as the DD and cost the same too - wierd. (It was however a "cheap" game, as in half the cost of a normal retail game - which could be attributed to the terrible response it got in the states when they released it unfinished and almost killed the reputation of the stellar franchise.

Trust me, now it's finished it's fucking great! And i have REALLY high hopes for 4, especially with Move support. Apparently Move players could actually have a lsight advantage over controller players online and that piques my interest for sure.

@mrandydixon - I'm going to enjoy trying it out, if it sucks, it sucks, I'm sure it won't suck any more than Auto-throttle/brake Natal powered Forza though.

i quite enjoyed (if it was super frustrating and barely responsive) NFS on the Wii, so with 1:1 control I could imagine GT will be pretty cool with the Move.

I really won't have much room for a few years, I'll be in a dorm room this year and an apartment the years to follow whilst I finish college. My question to MS, did you ever think college students would be able to use this? I know a lot of down time at school especially during the winter is filled with video games and it doesn't seem like many college students who don't have a house would be able to use this.
Another point I was curious about, being someone who is 6'4'', I wonder if I would need to stand back even further than the 6' range in order for the camera to capture my whole figure. Having the PlayStation Eye I know that I have to be further back than my shorter friends in order for it to capture me fully. Strange that MS wouldn't offer details as to the height vs distance requirements. I guess that would deter some taller buyers as myself.
Either way, I already pre-ordered the Move because Killzone 3 looks wicked and would be cool with motion controls. And as Kevin Butler stated, "It has what we in the future call.... buttons" ha

I looked at the specs on this and ran some calculations(Actually, I drew it on AutoCAD but no need to go into specifics.. :P). For the average 6' tall male, you need to 7.2 feet away from the Kinect for it to see your entire body. Not only that, but with the nature of the Kinect gaming, you are going to want a 2' to 3' radius of free space around you. So you can take your 6' and add 2-4' feet to be safe.
RenegadePanda's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/21/2010 11:32

And no one realizes Move will need space too? Have you tried playing Wii games 3 feet away from your TV? That's about the minimum amount of space I can get away with on my Wii, I'm generally better off upping it to about 4-6 feet so the on screen cursor will match up with my movements better. There's still a camera with Move that needs to see those ball things, and if they go out of the camera's range of vision then the game doesn't know what to do until you move back far enough.

But really? People want to play FPS's by pointing a remote at the TV? I hate that entire method of control, it doesn't make anything more immersive or realistic. It just makes it annoying as hell. It just feels like I'm changing channels and occasionally waving my arm around to do something I'd rather hit a button to do.

Have you ever shot a gun? Or calibrated a light gun?

If you have the move wii mote in one hand and your controller in another it will shake like fuck (especially with moves 1:1 scale tracking).

I'm predicting no one online will use the move wand due to inaccuracy issues.

Actually I can see it working pretty well. I expect the controllers to be better / more accurate than the Wiimote, and personally I thought the Wii wheel worked like a dream for Kart online. I've always felt really comfortable and accurate with it online, I'm sure Move will be more precise, I'd certainly hope so at least.

It's the moves precision that is the potential problem. Unless you have rock steady hands that crosshair is going to be shaking like a mofo. Remember, it's 1:1 so if it lives up to the accuracy claims then the slightest dip, drop, shake or nudge is going to affect your shot.

Of course this wont be a problem if (like sexual chocolate) you will pretty much have the wands ball touching your television.

Allow me to clarify my point.

There is a game in uk arcades across the land that requires you to shoot targets with a sniper rifle. This rifle is bolted to the cabinet and requires the use of both hands whilst leaning forward in a semi prone postion (your torso is pretty much flat against the cabinet). The barrel of the rifle us approximately 10 inches away from the screen. There is another, smaller monitor inside the "scope" of the rifle showing you a zoomed in view from the main monitor.

This game is as tough as 50 day old dog shit. The cross hair is all over the shop. It's a game that tests the incredible battle between a giggly sensitive device and your ability to control it.

Now imagine holding something much much lighter in one hand. Imagine how even a tiny shake will knock your aim off it's righteous course. Imagine trying to pull off a headshot or a body shot on an online opponent with such a light, airy and sensitive device.

Now imagine how many of your bullets will just wizz overhead from your opponents or slam into walls or go into the cornern if the screen.

This is my concern for sonys move. I don't doubt it will be accurate, nor do I doubt it will have an excellent line up if games. I doubt that most normal people will be able to play with a device to the levels its been advertised as having.

@Bakewell - Socom cancels out miniscule movements on the move when playing Socom - testers have said that Move users have an advantage over controller users. Stop being so pedantic.

It's super accurate, but it doesn't mean they haven't taken that into account while employing anti judder/shake/wiggle systems.

Look up some Socom Move videos - there's one where they talk about the exact "too precise" problem your talking about and explain how they REMOVED the problem.

By "employing anti judder/shake/wiggle systems" do you mean auto-aim.

Because what's the point in bragging about 1:1 precision when the confuter auto corrects the naunces of human control?

That's a serious question dude. What the fuck is the point if 100% accuracy when the computer is going to fix any fault of the user?

Doesn't seem so hardcore when you think it's correcting your aim on every shot. That would explain your claim it will give move users the avdvantge...,the computer is guiding your hand!

This doesn't seem like too big a deal. If you can fit a rock band drum set in your living room I'm sure you can potentially work this out... if you're so inclined.

That said I'm still not interested in Kinect or Move... I'm going to have to see some games and try them for myself. 6' required space doesn't really hold any sway as there's no games enticing me to begin with.

Oh and who is cowsick and why is he trolling so hard? :)
