Amazon sells 1,400 Wiis in ten minutes photo

According to Computer and Videogames, last week Amazon sold out of their replenished stock of 1,400 Wii consoles in ten minutes. Let me repeat that -- Amazon sold 1,400 Wiis in ten minutes.

This number really isn't surprising -- the Wii craze shows no signs of slowing down, with people lining up in force this past Friday to pick up the console. Just checking out the listings on my local Craigslist, people are attempting to sell the console for $400 or more, and are likely finding desperate consumers willing to pay the price. I was also laughed off of the phone by a few GameStop stores when I made some calls to determine console availability.

So if you're looking to pick up Nintendo's console this holiday, best of luck to you. This is the second holiday for the Wii, and it looks like Nintendo are going to continue to gain ground in what is quickly becoming a "console massacre."

wtf, come to Canada. I live in Toronto, Ontario and when I go into Wal-Mart,Best Buy,EB Games. They have several,no joke. Yesterday at Wal-Mart they were sold out of Wiis, so I thought things went back to normal but then I went to EB Games(to buy DMC 1,2 and 3)and they had like 4.This was also around 7-8pm.

@ everyone who only dusted off their Wiis for Galaxy:
Maybe if you start buying good stuff like Corruption, Zack & Wiki, and Sin & Punishment, developers will start making cooler games for Wii. Til then, I guess we'll have to settle for Brawl, Mario Kart and No More Heroes.

My dad just bought 5 Wiis yesterday to sell on Ebay because our Best Buy got a shipment in. I went to help him grab some (because they had a one per person/credit card policy) and the store was insane. Pretty much everyone in there was clawing their way towards the Wii mountain, and it was interesting to see the demographics of everyone who was buying them. Little kids, older kids, teens, old people, pretty much everyone in the store had (or tried to get) their hands on a Wii.

Agreed. People who bitch about the Wii's lack of games are just too short sighted to see past Halo 3 and Gears Of War. It just seems that people who want to bitch about the Wii will, regardless of it's ever growing library of decent games.

But not agreed about the Mario 64 comment, just to distance myself a little bit.

Agreed with Tron and Gale, but for the Mario and Zelda 64 remark, while I do think them somewhat overrated, certainly not to any relevant level.

The only reason people want one is either because they can never find one and are just frustrated to the point where they will verbally abuse a GameStop associate because they don't have them in stock (seriously, leave my employees alone you kitchen bitches), or they want to resell them(What do you mean I can't buy five Wii's? Because you're scum asshole.)

The PS3 is such a better deal than a Wii it's not even funny, and once parents who have no fucking clue realize that a 360 is an even better deal, the Wii just seems like a total ripoff, especially when the Wii interface was originally meant for the GameCube, but Nintendo was too cheap to develop it back then.

Tickle me Elmo all over again.

It's all the kids wanting it for X-mas and their parents running out and scooping them up.

I finally started playing mine after just over 4 months of inactivity because I picked up RE: Umbrella chronicles, a so so title.

How can anything be a better deal if you don't want it? Say I want to play Mario galaxy, Metroid, Z&W etc, then how would a PS3 be a better deal? If I want a PS3 then I buy a PS3, if I want a Wii I buy a Wii.

Also, if you knew anything about interface design then you would realise that all interface development is an ongoing process which is constantly being tweaked by a R&D division, it is not in any way linked to a generation or console life cycle. In the next few years you will probably see a new controller from Nintendo which was concieved 10 years ago, you can even see the seeds of Wii's motion control interface way back with Nintendo's useless Power Glove. It takes years and years to perfect and populise a new form of interaction.

Until the price on Ebay = the price in stores you won't see any drop in demand. There are a lot of people out there that are buying them all the time to turn around and sell them online. I've got a few friends still at best buy and 1 at gamestop. They see the same exact people there day after day asking for them, and buying them whenever they have them in stock. "Professional" ebayers if you will. Fuckers that don't give a damn about gaming and are only out to make a quick buck and cash in on the hysteria. But they can do that, as long as people are going nuts over getting a Wii.

Fuck the Wii.

Fuck the Wii haters.

Anyway, I would indeed bet that a big part of the reason they sold so fast is because they were snapped up by assholes who are just going to turn around and try to sell them on eBay for two or three times what they're worth.

As with any console, be it the Wii, PS3, 360, or whatever, please don't pay three times what it's worth to some asshat on eBay. If you wait, you will get one for the normal price eventually, if not cheaper, and it really is not worth it to pay more than that. You really don't need one right this minute that badly, no matter what you may think, and you're just encouraging more asshattery if you do buy it for so much.

Having a Wii really makes me feel like one of the chosen few. Its true though, having a Wii doesn´t necessarily mean constant usage. I have mine since summer, but throughout this term I´ve been playing Odin Sphere on the PS2, and only recently did I finish everything RE4 has to offer... again.

Things are gonna chance with Umbrella Chronicles though...

Okay, seriously, the Wii remote scheme was intended for the GameCube, but was too expensive to mass produce five years ago.

And yes, while the Wii is great for the industry, fuck the "Pro Ebayers". They provide no service, and only serve to gouge the real gamers.

@Hoodie:
Or we can just buy the games that we feel are worth the money. It's not an intestment, it's entertainment. Why on earth would I pay for games that don't interest me past glancing at box art in a rental store simply to see games that will come out regardless of me giving them $50? I'm all for supporting companies that produce products that suit my tastes, but buying to prove the point that people are willing to buy non-Nintendo games on a Nintendo system... I'll leave that to the fine people who made Carnival Games such a big seller.
@DanGale:
Much like the responce to the guy above, the Wii just hasn't touched several genres properly. Namely RPGs and fighters, but I'm sure others could name the genres that they feel are neglected. PS: Halo 2 and to a lesser extent Halo 3 sucked. Gears sucked less than 2 but more than 3. I bought none of them.

Oh, I don't think you should buy them as an investment- I think you should buy them because they're really fun. And if "hardcore" gamers dismiss the Wii because there aren't any "gamers' games" for it, well, there never will be.

Well if you think the Wii hasn’t touched several genres properly then that is a fair point. Personal taste is personal taste. Personally I don’t feel like there are too many great platformers nowadays. At least Mario Galaxy will suffice for now. The problem are those that seem to constantly bitch. You now the people. The ones that are all, “Well I bought a Wii, completed Zelda, played a bit of WiiSports…then what? It’s got no games”. This, I feel is a very short sighted attitude, one I’m afraid you succumbed to, as illustrated by your forst comment in this post. Also Johnthereaper, Catalyst and Lethal Dosage are all guilty of complaining. The fact is there are an ever-growing plethora of games. In the first year alone we’ve had “The Big Three”, Mario , Metroid and Zelda. Then we’ve had Trauma Centre, Zack & Wiki, Paper Mario, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Umbrella Chronicles, SSX Blur, Mario Strikers and a fine ass port of RE4. Not to mention the few games on the horizon like No More Heroes, Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii. That also doesn’t take into account the number of games for next year not yet announced. Taking that into account it’s hardly an investment for the future with so many great games available now, and so many in the near future.

The downside to the Wii being popular is one that has always plagued “the most popular console”. Developers will get lazy and release a bunch of shit just to make a quick buck. It’s nothing new and I wish people wouldn’t act like it’s the Wii’s fault for the sudden influx of god awful games.

Sorry I read your comment, scrolled down a bit further to type out a reply, and was promptly hypnotized for a good 20 seconds by generaldane's avatar. Anyway... You do raise several good points, and yes I am admittedly in the camp where you place me. The reason that I complain is this, Nintendo has nearly spent itself in the first year of the console. I've owned every Nintendo system, excluding Cube and including Virtual Boy, so it's not that I hate them. I have just seen this exact same thing happen with N64 and then again with Cube. Nintendo releases many great first party games, and then they leave it to third parties to pick up the slack until the next generation. I'm rather worried that it will happen again. ... where was I? Damn that avatar... Anyway, after 64 I took a break from Nintendo, but in 2005 I saw the Wii and immedately said that it would be mine since with a new console a new Smash Brothers would come out. I'm just hoping that I don't get burnt, aside from Smash, which can never suck. At least this time I hedged my bets with anther console... which, oddly enough is having similar issues. PS: It's been a day and Brawl still isn't out FFS, I'm not sure how much longer I can take it.

I can see where you coming from. Nintendo have taken a great risk releasing their five biggest franchises in the first 18 months. Perhaps I'm being optimistic in thinking they're already thinking up new ones. Disaster: Day of Crisis certainly looks interesting. Either way though, 18 months and five of their biggest franchises, not to mention some great third party games makes for an interesting Wii, certainly at the moment at least. I just don't get why people sell their Wiis on the assumption that there are no games when there clearly are many. Let us not forget the VC which, let's face it, is just fan service for us lot. Soccer moms aren't particularly interested in Act Raiser now are they?

Whether or not the Wii can last the whole hog remains to be seen. But with the success of the DS and the demand of the Wii I can hardly see it slowing down much, especially not until after next Christmas. But then again I'm not an analyst.

@DanGale

I really hope that you're correct. It is a pretty big risk, hopefully they don't have to double up like they did with Metroid last time around. As for VC, I sort of always saw that as them taxing people for the privilage of removing old consoles from their TV or to get people to feel sorry about downloading roms. Then again I'm probably in the minority since I've been playing games since I was 4 and bought my own nes after a month of random chores at 5, so I have managed to accumulate most of the titles that I want as far as nostalgia goes. It would be really nice if they wouldn't piddle-fart around with releases since most games are available on rom for free whenever you want(if you're of mind to do so, and I'm very much so not), as opposed to waiting for months hoping that the game you saw rated by the ESRB will be released this week.
DS isn't going anywhere for sure, but PSP is actually doing a respectable job (seemingly from nowhere.) I'm guessing that it's more to do with the market for handhelds being large enough to support 2 rather well made/developed for platforms than direct competition.
Here's to hoping that you're correct, but can I still hate the people who bought Carnival Games? PS: I love post scripts, and this time there were no hypno-boobs to distract me while typing.

I dunno what side of the Hardcore vs Casual side of the fence I fall on. I've been a gamer all my life, but never as devoted to the hobby as most. However I manage to fit into that whole short-sighted definition of a gamer aside, I've found more than a few games for the Wii that have kept me entertained. I'm not interested in the shit that exists for the console either, like Carnival Games for instance, and even still I've still found plenty to keep me happy. Either I'm easy to please, or that speaks well of the Wii library.

Or maybe it doesn't. To each their own, right? I don't get all the hate, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the console, so meh.

In closing, STFUAJPG. Isn't that what being a gamer is about? Fuck all that silly brand nonsense. Go with what appeals to you, and I'll continue to do the same.

Totally.

Also, compare this to the PS2. I would bet that even today, on the whole, there is a much larger proportion of shit games released for the PS2 than there are really good games. Yet, there are enough good games for the PS2 that we don't hear people saying "Fuck the PS2". I would bet this was said a lot when it first came out, but now, of course not. The Wii and the PS3 have only been out for a year now. There are only a handful of decent games for either. So what? Give them time. Or else, be an impatient little pussy and judge them on solely their first year. Wii haters/PS3 fanboys say stuff like "Fuck the Wii" on the one hand, while saying things like "Give the PS3 a chance, it'll be awesome" on the other. PS3 haters/Wii fanboys say the exact opposite. It's ridiculous, on both ends. Hell, look at the 360. It mostly sucked in its first year too, but look at the games already out and coming for it now.

So yeah, fuck haters and anti-fanboys in general, no matter which console they happen to be hating on. Criticism is fine and all but "Fuck the (insert console here)" is just retarded fanboy bullshit, as usual.

People that say the Wii doesnt have good games. I list you.

Super Mario Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Super Paper Mario
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
Madden NFL 07
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Mario Strikers Charged
Trauma Center: Second Opinion

---- Mind you, these games are rated Outstandingly high on Metacritic. Lets take a look at upcoming games. Although you shouldnt base the above games on their review, their are other games that are awesome but apparently dont fit the tastes of reviewers. With the Wii, you run the gambit of games that are multiplayer, puzzle games, shooters, sports, adventure, rpg.

And of course the most anticipated game of the Wii..

Super Smash Brothers : Brawl.

You people just are hoarding cash for that "one" good shooter or safebet game. You need to diversify your gaming habits and play something besides Madden and Guitar Hero all the time.

I don't understand people who complain that there's nothing to play on the Wii. Maybe that's because I, unlike a lot of the commenters here, actually own a wii, but I really don't know.

I guess I am a rare exception, because I have had something to play on the wii pretty much since launch.

I mean, after Zelda, I played Godfather, Red Steel, Excite Truck and Trauma Center. After that I played Harry Potter, Mario Strikers Charged, Tiger Woods and Metroid. Now, I have Mario Galaxy and Geometry Wars Galaxies.

Yeah, the lack of online play does suck. The only title that has pulled me in online has been Mario Strikers. Still, I really don't understand people who say that they have nothing to play on the wii. I haven't had that problem at all... *sigh*

Yeah, it's usually the people who actually own (and still own) a Wii who still enjoy it and thus defend it, while it's usually those who have never owned one, or who have only owned one for like five minutes before selling it out of boredom or whatever, who hate it and thus bash it.

That's just the way these things tend to go, and it's the case with pretty much any console.
