Amazon sells 1,400 Wiis in ten minutes

Amazon sells 1,400 Wiis in ten minutes photo
     Sales Records

According to Computer and Videogames, last week Amazon sold out of their replenished stock of 1,400 Wii consoles in ten minutes. Let me repeat that -- Amazon sold 1,400 Wiis in ten minutes.

This number really isn't surprising -- the Wii craze shows no signs of slowing down, with people lining up in force this past Friday to pick up the console. Just checking out the listings on my local Craigslist, people are attempting to sell the console for $400 or more, and are likely finding desperate consumers willing to pay the price. I was also laughed off of the phone by a few GameStop stores when I made some calls to determine console availability.

So if you're looking to pick up Nintendo's console this holiday, best of luck to you. This is the second holiday for the Wii, and it looks like Nintendo are going to continue to gain ground in what is quickly becoming a "console massacre."

These mental prices are enough to tempt me to sell my wii and get another one later on when everyone else calms down.

I would, but that would mean I can't play mario galaxy over and over again, and that just won't do.

That took 10 minutes? Heh, I figured they'd all be gone in seconds. I seem to remember their $100 360 Core system thing selling out in less than 5 minutes.

Meh, all of my friends with a wii pretty much only play one game. It is a fine system, but it's obvious that most of this is just from nintendo advertising.

@ Peronthious: There were only 1000 $100 360 Cores, so of course they would sell faster. They are on SALE and of course there were less. The Wii is number 1, no matter how my lightsaber slices it.

@s0lesurviv0r-- Meh, you're not missing much. I've had one since the minute they were made available and I've been chalking up the regret points ever since TP was beaten and Wii bowling stopped being interesting to my friends. By the time they are easy to find it's not like it will be terribly hard to catch up on the 3-4 games worth having for the system. Then again, I could just be bitter since I bought it solely on the promise of SSB:Brawl only to be mentally screwed over and over by false release dates. "Just half a year until June 1... Just half a year 'til December 3... Just a few months until Feb. 10." GAH!!!

I'm curious, does it matter when you log on to check if you've been selected? Because I thought you were randomly selected and could go back anytime that day to see if you've won? I could be wrong.

Also if you were smart, you would not have waited to get one until the fucking holidays. If you were planning on getting it for your kid or yourself, you should have gotten it sometime throughout the year. I told my boss to do just that for his kids, he found a package at circuit city, paid around $350 for it and a game or 2 in August. Now everytime I see him he thanks me for telling him to get it back then. You have no one to blame but yourselves, but something tells me most people will blame Nintendo. Its the holidays people. A time where any true meaning of the season is lost in the rush of buy buy buy. Something tells me if Nintendo had tripled production we still wouldn't have enough.

Well, I guess both groups of fanboys were right. Sony is picking up some slack with their price cuts, but Nintendo is still selling more and for the second year running.

Of course, I'm sure next year the Wii fad will finally die. You know, when companies actually start releasing titles worth a damn after diverting resources AWAY from the PS3.

Yea it has been said and it is true, don't trip over yourself or kill/harm anyone for a Wii i had it since launch and it's nothing special. In one year i have bought 3 games (Zelda,Red Steel,Trauma Center) so you aren't missing nothing without a Wii, well until Smash Bros comes out. But on the other side like it has also been said most of those Wii's will show up on Ebay sad pathetic scalpers..ZOMG i resold that wii and made 102$ YAY!!!

I believe Nintendo originally released a statement saying that they've doubled the amount of Wii units for the holiday season. However, it seems like Nintendo is still releasing 1.8 million Wii units a month. Nintendo then released another statement saying that they were confident that they will not be able to meet demand.

I just finished Super Mario Galaxy a few minutes ago. I'll just say that the game's introduction and ending are very cool and satisfying and easily top both Zelda:TP and Metroid Prime 3 in my opinion.

I'm still amazed by this. It's almost unanimous when you talk to gamers who own a Wii. What do they tell you: don't buy one! I own one and agree with what others have said, it's fun, for about two weeks. There are 3 games to play, and after you play them, there is no online play, and you get bored.

Mine has sat, and will sit, collecting dust until I pickup Mario Galaxy. Seriously. Not worth it people. Wait a year.

It's always worth it for Nintendo consoles. They are the best developer in the world, and for that I'll always buy their shit. Plus, you're guaranteed at least 4 or 5 epic titles filled with win throughout the lifespan of it, if not more
Catalyst's Avatar

@thedarksideofgaming

But since when was 4 or 5 epic titles with zero online play "worth it?" And how many of those "epic titles" are out for the Wii right now, compared to the "epic" titles on 360?

If there aren't more must play 360 titles right now than Wii titles, I'll eat my [insert clothing product].

There's one "epic, must-own" title on Wii. That's it.

I could easily name five for the 360 without breaking a sweat.

thedarksideofgaming at 11/25/2007 00:37
Well, Mario is must own, and Zelda is almost must own. Of course, we have Smash Bros. coming soon, and hopefully Mario Kart will be great for once again. Then you may have another Zelda before all is said and done. Also, Metroid Prime 3 is worth a purchase. RE4 is a port, but it's great if you dont already have it.

I hope these people that are buying the Wiis are actually going to play them... I can't help but have a really bad feeling that a lot of these are in the hands of people who plan to eBay them.

And I'm still sticking with my conspiracy theory that production is intentionally being stifled to create unnatural levels of demand.

I'm going to come clean here. I consider myself a hard core gamers, but I don't own a 360 (yet). I'm not big on First Person Shooters, Dudecore games like Gears of War, or Viva Piniata, so the consoel jsut doesn't look worth it to me right now. I'll probably get one once Resident Evil 5 drops, or when Castle Crashers is finally finished, but until then the only think tempting me towards the system is Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Both look fun, but neither are really must own games.

I think part of my continuing lack of interest in the 360 comes from my my let down with the X-Box 1. I bought the console for $179, played Panzer Dragon Orta, Jet Grind Radio Future, Ninja Gaiden, and never really played it again. The only console I ever played less than the X-Box 1 was the N64, which I only played for Star Fox 64 and Dr Mario 64 (Mario 64 and Zelda 64 are totally over rated in my opinion).

However, I've truly been over loaded this year with awesome games for the Wii. Mario Galaxy, RE 4 Wii, RE:Umbrella Chronicles, Metroid Prime 3, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Super Paper Mario, Zack and Wiki, Twilight Princess, and many others. And lest not I forget the Virtual Console which has bestowed upon me many great games I had never before played like Sin and Punishment and Alien Soldier.

Those of you who are disappointed with the Wii, you are either not buying the right games or just aren't into what the Wii has to offer.

I have not turned on my Wii in months. That will all change on Christmas morning when I finally get to play Super Mario Galaxy. Even since I beat Marble Mania I have had no desire to play the Wii. I kind of feel bad that I have had one since the day it came out.

@parrothead--
Exactly. After RE:4 mine sat for months completely untouched save for 2 instances. The first was when I ejected RE:4 so a friend could play. The second was when I spilled soda on the power brick and unplugged it... It sat, unplugged, for 3 months until Mario Galaxy came out. I didn't even have another new-type system to play games on for much of it until the PS3 price drop. In the 3.x months that I've had it I've played it far more than the Wii in a whole year. That will all change with Brawl, as I've said, but for now, yea feeling totally burnt.
