Amazon selling new Dreamcasts photo

Following in the steps of ThinkGeek, Amazon has apparently managed to track down another forgotten warehouse full of brand new Dreamcasts. The online retailer currently has them up for sale, and is charging $119.99 a piece. Those with good memories may recall that this is $20 more than what ThinkGeek charged, but I guess after their stock sold out in a matter of minutes Amazon realized there was suitable demand to jack up the price a bit. But hey, at least it has free shipping.

I’ve always been one of those people that, for whatever reason, never got their hands on Sega’s last home console, so I took this as a brilliant opportunity to rectify that situation. Yes, by that I mean that I ordered one immediately before letting all of you know about it. I’m not stupid, you know.

The product page can be found over here. You better hurry up if you want one; there’s a good chance they’ll sell out pretty damn fast.

I still don't get this craze, nobody wanted this system when it came out. Is it only because its dead that people are jumping on it now? I know the modding/bootlegging community was strong, hell that's what kept it around for as long as it was, but is that people motivations?? It seems like its something people are trying to get to be "geek chik".

@Cristiangamer
Ya, but you can also get a new Deamcast for that kind of money.

True, but as I like my videogame stuff new, it's not too big a hit to take.

Where do they find these brand new dreamcasts?

The dreamcast (Like the gamecube) was severly underated. Unfortuanately it happened to esist in the same console generations as the N64, PS2 and XBox. But the dreamcast makes gamers remember several good points. Pirates DO affect the industry and the end of a console maker (Whether it be SEGA, Mircosoft, Sony or Nintendo) Will never suddenly make all the bad points about it disapear and make everything whiskers on kittens but rather in will just destroy all the good things about that company and create several new crappy games. After the Dreamcast died I hope no other console maker stops creating games. Especially Nintendo (Who else will spread the word of gaming to people who will grow up to complain they're doing so for a new generation)

Mine's boxed with every peripheral ever. I'm glad I snapped it up for £100, since I love the damn thing to bits.

I'm also going to break someone's heart by saying that they're reproducing these Dreamcasts for the launch of the DREAMCAST 2!!

...or maybe not. Unfortunately not.

There are some of that would like to replace our our old well worn Dreamcasts. Mine sounds like a metal grinder when play on it, I have to turn the volume up to drown the noise out. This is not the normal horrible noise of a Dreamcast, this roar only appeared about a year ago. The end is nigh.

Are these region-free like the first Dreamcasts were? I still have mine, just wanted to know.

What good games are there on the Dreamcast to justify for paying such a high price?

Thanks for the heads up! I just ordered mine. I found a used one for $30 last week, but the damn thing already is scaring me with not reading the discs all the time.

Do you really need a new one? Like, there's tons and tons of cheap-as-shit used DCs out there that work fine.

The only games on the Dreamcast I remember worth playing were Seaman, Power Stone 2, NBA on NBC and Capcom vs. SNK 1 and 2. There are others, I'm sure.

@ chronic logic there are a few really good games you can get for the DC, but the main thing is they are running windows CE, which is very easy to hack and run homebrew/burned games with.

check the dcemu website for more info.

For me, I don't mind paying for something new that will hopefully have a longer life span than a used piece of hardware. Plus I'm single, and make a decent living so I have spare cash... not to mention enough spare time to play games that are 10 years old.

Bangai-O
FF: Mark of the Wolves
The Last Blade 2
MvC2
SFIII: 3rd Strike
Vampire Chronicles
Shenmue
RE: Code Veronica
All the SEGA regulars (House of the Dead, Dynamite Cop, etc)
Sonic Adventure
Rez
Skies of Arcadia
Ecco

Good luck finding any of those though.

Is it wrong that I'm tempted to get one of these, even though I don't have the money, and already have a Dreamcast?

As for good games, there are plenty. Lots of colorful, Japanese-style puzzle, fighting, driving and platforming games... if you're into that sort of thing.

It also has other uses, which I won't talk about here.

I would like to buy it to see what the craze is about, but as I look at the games, I already played the ones I'm interested in on others platforms.

I would be buying it only to have it? Nah. I'm not a console collector.

There are a lot of rare shmups and fighters to be had on the system. Rival Schools. Giga Wing. Power Stone. Cherry Blossom. Last Blade. Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. Heavy Metal. Then there is Shenmue and Timestalkers for the rare RPGs.

Playasia.com has a nice list of various Japanese awesomeness.

2 reason alone to own a dreamcast :)

i enjoyed my dreamcast when i had it, but i'd rather spend $35 for a used system. dreamcast was my foray into pirating games, since you could dl all of them and put 'em on cdr's.

love all the reviews on amazon from nine years ago.

You can find a used dreamcast for $20 to $40 us dollars usually. There are at least two local gamestores near me that have bunches of them.

I've already got a backup dreamcast, and so should ALL OF YOU. actually, I found my 2nd one. the Av cable was chewed up, so the owner apparently threw it out, along with all the cables and controller, thinking it was broken. SCORE.
