Amazon says its PS3 sales have gone up 700% since the price cut photo

While some of us were waiting for better games than Motorstorm to be released, it seems that a lot more were just itching for that hundred dollar price drop. Since Sony announced it was slashing prices like the Yorkshire Ripper on its PlayStation 3, sales on Amazon have shot through the roof, now holding the retailer's number 3 sales slot -- a huge improvement over the 24th slot it held prior. Furthermore, in the last 24 hours it has become the largest sales gainer as far as videogame related products go. Amazing what the shedding of a hundred bucks can do.

Now, I know some of you have been keen to point out that Amazon is but one retailer, but this is still pretty significant and indicates that price was indeed the biggest barrier to Sony's success. All we need now are some stellar PS3 titles on the shelves and maybe the fence-sitters will join in the frey. So close to E3, this is the kind of last-minute boost that Sony needs.

Did anyone think this spike might be fueled by the news that the new 80 gig model doesn't have hardware back compat? I bet there were a lot of fence sitters forced to jump in because they wanted to make sure to get a machine that still had the emotion engine before they disappear. Don't kid yourselves, sony is moving slowly towards software only emulation as a cost saving feature. If you want hardware back compat, you better pick up a 60 gig model now.

Nice article Mr, Sterling. Looks like us gamers are the winners.

Some of you are WAY too concerned about graphics.

Nice that Sony is finally getting out of their slump, hopefully the momentum will continue for them. Having a close console race is better for gamers in the long run, since the leading company won't be able to rest on their laurels. Competition leads to better innovation.

the thing is, 100 off is a nice deal(my first post by the way) but there has to be something of substance to make it worth the purchase, someone said earlier back in 1990 a halfway decent pc, was 3,000 about 5,000 in todays dollars, today you can get a pc, soooo much faster, and better graphics for like, 600 bucks, yet we pay 500 for the ps3, the bluray is a nice addition, however I am interested in drakes fortune, (it reminds me of one of the coolest games ever made, flashback, but in the jungle, with crazy animation) and i'm a fan of the R & C series as well, God of war 3 will be awesome to...so..right now i'm on the fence till DF comes out.
