Amazon says its PS3 sales have gone up 700% since the price cut photo

While some of us were waiting for better games than Motorstorm to be released, it seems that a lot more were just itching for that hundred dollar price drop. Since Sony announced it was slashing prices like the Yorkshire Ripper on its PlayStation 3, sales on Amazon have shot through the roof, now holding the retailer's number 3 sales slot -- a huge improvement over the 24th slot it held prior. Furthermore, in the last 24 hours it has become the largest sales gainer as far as videogame related products go. Amazing what the shedding of a hundred bucks can do.

Now, I know some of you have been keen to point out that Amazon is but one retailer, but this is still pretty significant and indicates that price was indeed the biggest barrier to Sony's success. All we need now are some stellar PS3 titles on the shelves and maybe the fence-sitters will join in the frey. So close to E3, this is the kind of last-minute boost that Sony needs.

It's almost like launch #2 for the PS3. I'm curious to see if the sales will continue to dominate or if it's just a spike.

The price cut is nice. I'm anxious to see what games are going to come up in the future. Motorstorm and Resistance don't cut it so well, but hey, Sony is starting to pick up nicely.

I'm curious how many of the people buying on Amazon think that they are getting a sale price, rather than realizing that it is the new retail price.

Either way, I'm sure the price cut will help sales, although like everyone else, I'm scratching my head over the 80GB HDD tier when I just bought and installed a 400GB HDD from Fry's for $80 shipped. But that package probably isn't for us on Dtoid.

Although I won't get a PS3 for a while, if at all, I hope it does well for competition's sake. It's not like SONY has been eating my baby puppies. Recently.

With a estimated failure rate upwards of 30%, there is no way i'm getting a 360 any time soon. Sure they extended their warranty, but i'd rather have a working system than brick and promises free repairs. Ridiculous. A $100 price drop and GTA4 coming out in Oct, the PS3 has now become the system i'm going to spend my money on.

You have a strong point BuckFitches... but just like the last two playstations I believe after all the kinks andsuch are worked out and people are used to developing on it, the PS# will have the edge on beauty. The plus great games (hopefully) will most likely put it back on it's throne.

I like how you only have one thing to add to the conversation and it's the stereotypical thing a person says when somebody insults or mocks the ps3.

Frankly, I think this whole ps3 has better graphics than anyone else is bullshit. I haven't seen it do anything better than the 360 graphics wise. Not to mention that the best looking game graphics wise out so far is Gears of War. The only games on sony's roster that could possibly top it graphics wise is Mgs and Final fantasy if the gameplay actually does look like that trailer, which I doubt it does.

I had a look at that first link you posted up, Buck... Call me crazy, but the PS3 version seems to be slightly better than the 360 on NFS Carbon.. COD3 appeared to be exactly the same despite the brightness level, something that can be edited at free will - other than that, pretty much the same.. Madden 07 seems to be in favor of the 360.. Marvel Ultimate Alliance I knew to lag on the PS3 - so that's an automatic favor to the 360 in my book..

I personally don't know how to feel on NBA 2K7, they both seem to have flaws where the other has benefits. On Fight Night, I personally prefer the PS3 version.. THP8 seemed better on the 360.. I would have to say it's an extremely close match on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07..

For my personal choice, despite the too close to be decided - i'd have to say they're pretty much dead even.

You weren't expecting people to click that link and not draw their own conclusions, and instead just take the editors word for it, did you? I could do the same style on the second link if you so wish me to... But I don't think my personal opinion is at the scale right now. I honestly think that opinion on which one has better graphics is up to each individuals opinion. Not to mention that at least 3 of the games in those links are nothing but gamma/brightness options.

Amazon says sales on the PS3 are up. I say good for the PS3. Perhaps this spells better things in the future for competition, and we'll get some better games for all consoles out as the after-effect of all this. Nothing like a little competition to get the development stirring.

Cool, Dennen. I personally thought the 360 games had more detail and less fade-out, but you are absolutely right in your assertion that we are each entitled to our own opinions. I think Sony is looking better and better, but I still think the graphics are currently better on the 360. Oh, and I definitely expected people to draw their own conclusions. It's not as much fun if we all agree. ;)

Don't you guys know by now? At this point, it's not about the graphics. It's about the ART DESIGN.

Give me Ratchet and Clank over 'real is brown and dark blue' Gears of War any day of the week.

One thing I just thought of, is this price drop global? If not, could this spike be from people in other world regions buying the PS3 on "sale"?

I thought about getting the 360 elite from Japan where the ic costs $380, but I'd pretty much lose that in shipping. Now, if the 360 elite cost $380 in South America, I'd be importing that shit in a heart beat.

Deiga: Ding ding, correct. Art design wins over graphics. It's about attention to detail and what you do with what you have that counts, which is why I keep saying Super Smash Bros. Brawl looks awesome.

That said, I dig the art direction in Gears of War just as much as I like the graphics, so I do disagree there. :-)

Not saying I don't think Gears of War has good art direction... but Ratchet and Clank's reliance on a more vibrant palette and unique character design puts it at the top of my book.

Still, I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who thinks this way.

Now that that specific joke is getting old...

I believe that the graphics is pretty dead even (I know many have said this already, but might as well add my own opinion). Some games are good on one system, and others look better on the other. I feel Sony will get better games, MS will hold tightly to their system throne for the time being, and the Wii... well... I personally believe putting everything on waving your arms wildly in the air can only go so far. How far that is, only the future will tell.

Finally, to loop the conversation back to the beginning for the hell of it...

YAY CHEAPER PS3!!!

Ratchet and Clank looks original do you, Deiga? Really?

I think the game looks good, and it you like lighter stuff I coudl see you prefering it to GoW. But original? That's like calling Shrek 3 original.

deiga-the-semivaliant's Avatar
deiga-the-semivaliant at 07/09/2007 18:58
Does 'unique' mean the same as 'original'?

I guess it does fall in the whole 'Pixar-Dreamworks' basket of animated feature films, but in the gaming world it's one of the few titles that sports fun visuals and technical finesse at the same time.

That's something that's easier said than done.

$100 price cut? That's nice, less expensive is better. I'm not even going to touch the graphics issue, as I play my DS more than my Xbox 360 and Wii combined. Is the PlayStation 3 had a game library that I actually wanted to play, I'd jump all over it. As it is, I'm actually considering a PlayStation 2, so that way I don't have to worry about this backwards-compatibility nonsense (yes, I am the one person who doesn't own a PS2, but both an Xbox and GameCube). That's the issue here, games. The cost was quite a bit, but not outside my price range. Cheaper is good. More games would be better.

I'm with Diega on the Ratchet & Clank call... I have been watching a lot of the videos being released regarding the E3 stuff and the like, developers sending out all their stuff... I have to say, most FPS games tend to look very similar. I much prefer something that can feel like a fresh breather from every day routine. Kind of like going for a countryside drive if you've lived in the city for so long.

I quickly tire of the same-ole... The Darkness was invigorating for me because of the playstyle, it didn't have the same exact look and feel of every other shooter available at the time... Wherein I am having a difficult time getting hyped up for the COD4 expansion, addon, spinoff- whatever it is... Same goes for Army of Two.. I see the trailer and I don't really see anything new, so it doesn't truly grab my attention...

If anything sells me on those styles of games, it's giving me something innovative that will allow me to say "haven't done that before".. Story works the same, but hearing "You've successfully staved off the German forces and secured your position at the bridge. Good work, soldier!" before it gets very very tiring... Gears of War is a good departure into something new that keeps me interested.. Same went for Resistance.

Ratchet and Clank may not be original, but it's definitely unique compared to other nex-gen.... errr... current-gen games. So many games have decided to go with the dirty brown palette, or just very dull colors while striving for an ultra-realistic look. It's refreshing to see a bright colorful game.

Other than that, Ratchet and Clank really looks amazing. I'm finding it really hard to believe it'll look as good as the screenshots they're showing, but if it does I'll be extremely happy.

After seeing the latest screenshot of Lair, I'm really starting to give some credence to the argument that PS3 graphics can be far superior than 360 but you need to code the game so that some of the graphical rendering is done by the CELL processor and not just handed off entirely to the graphics chip as is typical with 360 and PC development. This would explain why games ported from PC/360 to PS3 don't look better and sometimes look/perform worse.

Anyway, the last time I checked amazon the PS3 had gone up 2,400%. This article should be updated as this is a pretty impressive number and deserves to be noted.

I'm going to check Traget tomorrow. If they are sold out of PS3's, then that will signal to me that this price drop means something.

If they are fully stocked as usual, then I'll sort of disregard it.

Honestly, who buys a console over Amazon and pays an extra $15-$30 in shipping when you could jsut drive to Wal-Mart? It's just plain weird, and to me not indicative of what the masses are up to.

Most people I know aren't even aware of the PS3 price drop. I was telling them about it at work, and their yawns were almost deafening.
