A while back, I posted Amazon.com's top videogame picks for 2008, based on sales and desire. Considering it was all Wii, and mostly garbage, such a list was an incredibly depressing reflection on American society. I expected the same from the retailer's top DS games of 2008, but actually came away rather surprised.
Not only is Professor Layton and the Curious Village Amazon's best DS game of last year, but obscurities like The World Ends With You and N+ have also made the list. In the email Amazon sent my way, it didn't divulge any information on how these games were picked, but my hope is that it's based on consumer interest like the last one. Here's the top ten games of last year, according to Amazon:
- Professor Layton and the Curious Village
- The World Ends With You
- Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution
- LEGO Batman
- Final Fantasy IV
- N+
- Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir
- LEGO Indiana Jones
- Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
- Trauma Center: Under the Knife
I do believe I shall allow that list. Of course, it's missing the excellent Lock's Quest, which was definitely one of the very best DS games I've ever played, but you can't have everything.
Props to those that made a retailer's list that didn't make want to shove my own eyeballs up my arse. For once.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But...I'm guessing those two didn't make it due to be released closer to year's end.
At least it's a hell of a lot better than their "best games of 2008" list.
but the gem-to-crap ratio is pretty good from where I'm sitting-- and certainly better than the Wii.
It's interesting that everything Nintendo fails at with the Wii, they do pretty well with the DS. The utility software, like Brain Age and the language programs, is at least halfway decent if not stellar, and the inevitable shovelware is accompanied by a large amount of damned good games. I wonder if the two departments are managed by two completely different factions at Nintendo who hate each other and refuse to talk to one another, because it really does seem like two different companies.
Seriously, those fat fucks at the top are riping everything away from us...you get to know your reporters and trust their views, but they keep tearing these people out of their positions and installing automatons in their places...
WTF?!?!?
Also @ Woocifer
They did either yesterday or the day before, keep up lad! The background of DToid was changed in respect also.
God people are stupid.
I was under the impression they would come out one per year around the same time. Hopefully at LEAST a spring release?
List has a severe lack of Dragon Quest 4 and Chrono Trigger DS.
Trauma Center is good till the aliens come, then it just puts me right off. They ever make a TC without GUILT and I'll love it.
Also, Am I the only person here who wants to violently murder Layton and that kid? Their voice acting pisses me off so much.
I like puzzles in my games, but the game part took a backseat to the puzzles.
I think TC deserves a higher spot.
