Amazon jumps aboard the Dragon Age preorder train photo

It's simply not enough that GameStop and Steam are offering preorder bonuses for Dragon Age: Origins, or that there is a standard edition, Collector's Edition and Digital Deluxe edition to choose from. Nope, now Amazon has joined the party, offering its own set of exclusive goodies in exchange for buying BioWare's next RPG through them.

Amazon is offering a $10 gift card along with the Lion's Paw Boots, an in-game item that adds to the player's armor, dodge and missile evasion attributes. Remember, preordering through Steam gets you the Wicked Oath Ring, while preordering through GameStop gets you Feral Wolf Charm. Nearly all retailers are offering the Memory Ring as well. You are pretty much spoiled for choice.

I'm not sure if that much choice is a great thing, either. I mean, EA and BioWare seem to be taking the idea of exclusive bonuses and going mental with it. I dread to think what will happen with Mass Effect 2. Will we get to the point where every different retail chain will have something unique to offer? The idea of preorder exclusives has potential to get pretty ludicrous if this carries on.

Ah well, doesn't matter to me. This game is going to be awesome and you're going to agree.

Also, donate!

Hmmm, that $10 gift card might have sealed the deal.

I bought the digital deluxe edition from steam when the pricing was screwed up and got it for $55 instead of $65, so I'm good.

Most likely Bioware is going to be stupid again and not let people outside of the states download their game. Sometimes its great to be in Japan for games and sometimes it sucks.

@sicPOS: I wish I had jumped on that. Here I was thinking to myself, "Gee, how reasonable! The premium edition has been discounted for not including the physical products that typically define said premium editions. Kudos to them!"

And then it turned out to be a pricing mistake :/

I love Amazon. I have $30 so far in $10 preoder gift cards. Plus Amazon cuts $5 off preorders.

Also, a friend of mine is on the animation team at Bioware. He tiold me point blank that if your PC can run it, BUY THE PC VERSION. Don't buy the console version if you have the option.

As per his e-mail:

Always go for the PC over console. With DA on 360 and PS3 we've been testing it out and it's ok but DA is very much a PC game (esp if you're a PC player!!) from what i know they're actually are going to shove the DLC stuff onto PS3/360. So all be the same.

Speaking to me DA buddies, they said get it on PC if you're a PC player. always better. Plus you get to use the toolset! We made it on the PC, we tested it on the PC we had some guys port it to PS3/360! so us as developers never got to test our content on the console. So that would be another reason i wouldn't get the console.

WTF???

Amazon's pre-order for the Collector's Edition is currently at $129 for PC and $145 for consoles, yet the same Collector's Edition directly from EA is only $65 for PC and $75 for consoles! I don't give a shit about boots! I'm ordering directly from EA with that much of a price difference!

@John B

I just looked at Amazon and it's the other way around. The EA copies are $129 and $145.

I preordered the CE on amazon forever ago. The web page says it is unavailable now, but I assume my preorder from August is ok right...? I assume they are sold out now, but my preorder is in... right?

Now I'm all paranoid.

I maybe get the Limited Edition, but only after the reviews are out.
I don't trust preorders.

This is cool. I was gonna pre-order from amazon.com anyways, and I already know this game is gonna rock since I loved Baldur's Gate I & II.

WHOA! WTF, the collector's edition for this shot up to $150 on amazon.com! It was like $70 still just the other day wasn't it?

Guys, just buy it straight from EA. It's clear that the bastard scalpers are taking over on Amazon. You don't need character boots that badly.

In-game exclusives for preorders appeal to me about as much as a wet blood fart. Gift cards, on the other hand, I fully support those.

Yep, Amazon just has douchebag scalpers offering the CE now. I gave up and ordered it direct from EA with a pile of Sims cash cards I got on the cheap a few months back, special perks by retailer be damned.

i dont even think the preorder bonuses are worth it that much for this game... as far as enhanced XP bonus goes, I feel like I'd rather be challenged by the game to earn such things rather then getting a head start on a single player game.. and if such a thing was on a multiplayer game (*ahem*NHL 10*ahem), itd be total bullshit to everyone that didnt get a preorder

wonder how many of the people that own an "incomplete" version of the game actually fill up their inventory completely with all the in-game items anyway.

Amazon gets my orders to me in 2 days every time, even without spending extra on delivery. I'm in Chicago downtown, so I must be near some delivery hub or something. Amazon has always, always been extremely good in all aspects.

I do not work for Amazon.

Just purchased from EA. Now, the question is, are they going to ship it in time for me to get it on the release date or are they going to ship it on the release date, thus forcing me to wait for it?!

I don't know why all the blogs are picking up on these now, all the retailers have had these pre-order bonus' announced for months. The only new Dragon Age pre-order news is that the digital deluxe versions of the game are getting Warden's Keep and Amazon having the $10 gift card, but that's only for the standard edition and needs me some cloth map.

I think I'm going to start pretending these things don't exist anymore. It's turning out like an attempt to buy a TV where you have to research 1001 different models and find which shortcomings you prefer to live with.

What this really means is that Bioware just repurposed an existing asset and effectively took it away from the main game. Personally I have no problem with incentivising a games sales with external assets like making of books/dvds or figurines, but when it comes down to stripping out content that was originally in the game ala the EA Store Haircuts in Sims 3 then it becomes an issue.

As much as I love BW, the whole EA marketing aspect with regional limitations really sucks it big time! The bottom line is someone should be able to order what ever version they want regardless of geopolitical demarcation. Many American's live outside of CONUS and have to deal such shit from EA all the time. Seems to me refusing to sell copies to someone is the say as saying "go ahead and get a free version since we clearly dont want your money". Food for thought...
