It looks like our guess from a few days ago was correct.
A few days ago we came across Amazon's listing of Xbox 360's for $329.99, which was $20 cheaper than the recently announced price cut. As these were not listed in any special way, we guessed that Amazon wanted to clear out the non-HDMI models of the console to make way for the new ones.
The listing is now back at the normal price of $349.99, and Amazon says that only 3 are left in stock. Mission accomplished?
Amazon now has a new listing titled "Xbox 360 Console Includes 20GB Hard Drive (with HDMI)." This item is listed a a price of $349.99, its release date is listed as August 8th, 2007, and the contents in the description also list HDMI as a feature. This is very convenient for those who wish to purchase the new model in preparation for the fall/holiday gaming season.
Actually, if you order now, you can have it delivered in time for Madden '08.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I still own Madden '94.
Depends how far down the line.
In fact if I'm not mistaken, most of the comparisons I've seen tend to make HDMI looked washed out rather than detailed,
Why would anyone buy a new 360 simply for this?
And the Elite version, there hasn't been a ploy to sell a product worse than this since (ironically) the same company called Xbox 2, Xbox 360 to compete with a 3rd version of another product we-all-know-of.
-BUT IT's BLACK!!!11 OMGOMGOMG
Case in point: Your Xbox is fine without HDMI, stop being a glutton.
i like the choice of having an optional HDMI input, but if i were going to get a 360 i would probably care more about the improvement in the console's temperature.
also, i seem to remember former ms employee peter moore being very critical of sony when they announced their price drop and new 80gb unit. he was very dismissive and said something to the effect of, "i can't even keep track of all the different products and prices they have out there right now." this latest announcement from microsoft seems infinitely more confusing. to date, MS has the following flavors of Xbox 360 on the market:
- an HDD-less core (for now)
- an HDMI premium
- a non-HDMI premium
- an HDMI elite
and, when ms releases the new Falcon chip, there will be Falcon versions of the elite and premium (and maybe the core, should they continue to manufacture that model, which is looking less than likely), differentiated by probably less-than-obvious means. so you could walk into a best buy or gamestop for a premium and find out they have the non-HDMI premium for $349, but are out of the HDMI premium for the same price, and have no idea if either of those are built with the smaller, cooler chip.
it's all kind of infuriating, and makes it harder to just jump in and buy a 360 like i would some other kind of consumer electronics. i've heard a lot of people on the message boards telling other people to "quit waiting around for them to be fixed" and just jump in and buy one, knowing MS will replace your malfunctioning 360 for 3 years, but that just seems totally unacceptable to me.
the amount of namecalling and bad pr spin in this round of consoles is totally depressing. i never thought something like video games would become as underhanded and partisan as u.s. politics...
@Topcow.. mass execution began little more than a few months after launch. As long as they leave faulty hardware floating around the market, for which they have admitted responsibility and allocated a billion dollar repair fund/write-off, they'll lose more than if they would recall each and every one of them right now. Again, IMO. I could be wrong... I suppose they could be under the impression that this 3 year warranty will suffice. Hopefully they're not quite so naive. But things like this make me wonder. Regardless, I agree that many - if not all - 360s will be intentionally euthanized if word gets out that repairs are no longer repairs. Rather, replacements, with the 0728 lot.
@electro.. are you sure that these new models aren't using the falcon chips? I don't know either way, but my logic (i.e. my two prior responses) tells me that MS would need to be deranged and insane to release newly manufactured models without the 65s. Even if those chips would only provide for a slight improvement. I doubt that the new "enhanced" heat sink will bring the 360's fever down on its own. The system (and Microsoft's reputation) is being sullied by relentless reports of RRoD. MS knows that their future in this industry is hanging in the balance... producing more shoddy, failure-prone consoles would seal their fate.
My solution for MS:
I would respond positively to an announcement that for [range = $0 - $100], your repair could be upgraded to a falcon replacement. 3 year warranty remaining intact, just in case. This way, they recoup at least a portion of their losses, simultaneously avoiding future repair costs, and most importantly, receiving positive PR, as it's crucial that they repair their tarnished image. Anyone agree? Disagree?
