Amazon is doing the used games thing photo

Competition is always good, right? Well, not for GameStop!

Mega web retailer Amazon.com has made their move into used games. Their new games trade-in system is pretty slick, too. First, you select games on their site to trade in. They'll have to be in "good condition," with case and cover art and manual. Then the games are shipped free, with Amazon's site giving you the shipping label and packing slip. Then, when they get the games, you'll get an Amazon gift card deposited into your account.

I'm not much of a game trader-inner, but I do love Amazon and shop there frequently. The idea of offloading some games with ease and getting credit to shop for more than just other games is enticing.

The trade-in values seem to be pretty fair, don't you think? $29 for LittleBigPlanet? Or $16 for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

I have a better system for getting rid of unwanted games: I let friends borrow them and then forget they have them. Sure, it doesn't make any money, but when you accidentally kill a man and are on the lam, your friends are far more likely to take you when they remember all the games you've loaned them

I wonder how much the prices will differ from Marketplace prices, whether they'll judge based on the customer created economy...

Wait, doesn't Amazon already do this stuff?

@Chronic Logic:

No, they have a system that allows independent sellers to market their goods, including used games.

I didn't know that they provided the shipping before. Now it sounds like something I might use in lieu of Gamestop. I'll still shop around to get my best trade-in value though.

I don't know if I'll start using this over Goozex. It's great that you can buy other stuff and not being exclusively tied to games like GameStop.

It gives me more incentive not to shop at that store.

I like goozex better. I don't trade in games so much as just flat out buy them from goozex, using their point system. I'll probably just stick with them. I've received almost 40 games from them and only one time did the game not come. And even then, I just had to report it and they refunded my points.

Oh I beat it all right, and I think I'm gonna beat it again. You can never beat it too many times when it comes to Hannah Montana. Wait, we are talking about masturbation, right?

I'm going to be pointing out DemonPR's post right above me here. He JUST said that he got screwed by GameStop by getting 15 dollars for Mortal Kombat vs DC, and Amazon is offering 16.

When I looked over those values on Amazon I just thought to myself, "This is like the same value that GameStop offers, only you have to have games in better condition and you have to ship them off yourself."

I can actually get better values from GameStop itself using a coupon or two from their mailing letter.

someone better double check there trade-in values at amazon cause they'll give you $14 for wii sports. I dunno I just find it weird they'll give you that much for a game that comes free with every wii.

@ DemonPR - If you would have traded that using Goozex, you would have gotten 900 points for that game, which is equivalent to $49.00. Compare that to $15 that Gamestop gave you. 900 points on Goozex is enough to get about 95% of the available games for trade.

I will never go back to trading games anywhere else, ever.

To date there hasn't been anyone the size of Amazon to offer this type of service to consumers - I believe Amazon will iterate their offering (as well as other successful buyback sites) to add more benefits and successfully differentiate from Gamestop’s in-store trading. Gamestop has recently said that online trading will fail. This is like Blockbuster saying that Netflix will fail because why would people want to receive new movies in the mail rather than go to their local Blockbuster store – we now know how that story line has played out.

Though buyback sites have been around since 1996/97 (with the debut of SecondSpin.com) this category of ecommerce (consumer to business) has been a sleeping giant. No one with any significant resources to date has offered consumers the type of service that really compels consumers to trade online in the numbers consumers do with online ecommerce or rental of movies through Netflix type services. With Amazon’s entry this sleeping giant of an online commerce segment will wake up and challenge brick and mortar stores (who trade) like ecommerce did with brick and mortar for the last 10+ years. Game on!

I'm down for this , Amazon is the best place to do business on the net. I would also love to see Gamestop crumble.
