Competition is always good, right? Well, not for GameStop!
Mega web retailer Amazon.com has made their move into used games. Their new games trade-in system is pretty slick, too. First, you select games on their site to trade in. They'll have to be in "good condition," with case and cover art and manual. Then the games are shipped free, with Amazon's site giving you the shipping label and packing slip. Then, when they get the games, you'll get an Amazon gift card deposited into your account.
I'm not much of a game trader-inner, but I do love Amazon and shop there frequently. The idea of offloading some games with ease and getting credit to shop for more than just other games is enticing.
The trade-in values seem to be pretty fair, don't you think? $29 for LittleBigPlanet? Or $16 for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
No, they have a system that allows independent sellers to market their goods, including used games.
I didn't know that they provided the shipping before. Now it sounds like something I might use in lieu of Gamestop. I'll still shop around to get my best trade-in value though.
It gives me more incentive not to shop at that store.
When I looked over those values on Amazon I just thought to myself, "This is like the same value that GameStop offers, only you have to have games in better condition and you have to ship them off yourself."
I can actually get better values from GameStop itself using a coupon or two from their mailing letter.
Shit can buy you plastic surgery.
I will never go back to trading games anywhere else, ever.
Though buyback sites have been around since 1996/97 (with the debut of SecondSpin.com) this category of ecommerce (consumer to business) has been a sleeping giant. No one with any significant resources to date has offered consumers the type of service that really compels consumers to trade online in the numbers consumers do with online ecommerce or rental of movies through Netflix type services. With Amazon’s entry this sleeping giant of an online commerce segment will wake up and challenge brick and mortar stores (who trade) like ecommerce did with brick and mortar for the last 10+ years. Game on!
