There has been no shortage of news about Nintendo's domination of the gaming market in the past year or so. The world seems to have taken a real liking the Nintendo Wii and DS, and it looks like there is no end in sight. Of course, Nintendo is pleased as punch, and they'd love to brag to the world about how well they're doing, but lately they don't even have to lift a finger. Everyone else has that taken care of these days, taking the latest NPD data and running with it.
Nintendo posted a net income of $667 million dollars for the April through June period, and they've brought up their quarterly profit to five times previous numbers. The data says that 9.27 million Wii consoles have made their way into living rooms across the globe. They've even upped previous predictions, stating that they will sell 16.5 million Wii consoles by March 2008. If you thought those numbers were great, check out the ones for Nintendo's DS: since its 2004 launch, 47.27 million DS portable game systems have been sold.
June's data shows a similar trend, as Nintendo's systems come out on top by a long shot. Last month Nintendo moved 381,300 Wii, which totals more units than the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined for that month. The DS did even better, with 561,900 sold in June, well over Sony's 290,100 for the PSP.
On top of all of that, Nintendo held six of the top 10 titles. First-party titles like Mario Party 9, Wii Play, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, and Pokemon Battle have dominated sales charts.
With this, Nintendo has entered the list of the top ten of Japan's most valuable companies.
Drinks on Mario.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wish they would use that money for some interesting projects, like decent wii channels (weres the DSdemochannel?)
Only if the Gamecube would have sold as good as the wii is now, I think Nintendo would already be on the Hd and online era by now...
Aw, I'm just joshing. Kudos to Ninty.
I want what they promised us.
I want more channels, and I mean channels like »download content«- or »bonus«-channel, stuff like that. And I want, for example, »a free vc title for all of you fans« on holidays.
Seriously though, is it any surprise that a $250 console is selling twice as much @ half the price?
I am surprised at the DS though, I though Madden nation would eat up the PSP.
I think people STILL aren't getting it, the PS3 & 360 are the niche consoles, they are the private hobby elitist consoles, the videogame industry right now is kind of like Basketball before black players entered the sport. The Wii is bringing the videogame industry in line with all other mainstream markets - the car market, the home appliance market, the movie market, the literature market, the digital media market - they all cater for everyone first, then the more specialist products are there if you want them, but the number of specialist products are completely proportunate to that specialist market, for example most people by affordable decent cars, few people are real car enthusiasts who are willing to spend serious money on a Porshe or Ferrari.
The Wii is the peoples console which will cater for hardcore gamers in a proportuntae way. That is all, it's really quite simple. If gamers want it to be like a PS3 or 360 then they will disappointed, also, if gamers think that this industry can carry on churning out consoles like the PS3 & 360 then your in for further disappointment.
Enjoy the PS3 & 360 while you can, they are elitist specialist consoles, and represent an end of an era. Peronally I'm glad and I think that's a good thing, although most gamers obviously disagree with me, they want to keep on playing prettier versions of the same things forever,
It's a curse, I'm surrounded by inferior stupid people, in days of old I would have been worshipped, but in these days of the "The Rise Of The Idiots" I am unappreciated and misunderstood. Yet I still try to spread my insightful knowledge to the dribbling fools, and look at what I get in return. It's not worth it I tells ya.
Saying that, the 360 is still my console of choice. The DS is a fine after dinner biscuit.
Sorry for sounding like I dissed the power of the shiny... my wifey is a lover of teh shiny tings as well.
