Quantcast

Today, Sega released a new trailer for Alpha Protocol (available after the break). It has bursts of gameplay, most of it hovering around violence of some kind. The game’s protagonist, Michael Thornton, can really bust some heads. He can also cap a dude if he needs to.

Despite the fighting, the trailer ends on the note that “choice is the weapon.” If choices involve violence -- I get it. Nothing is more gratifying than deciding whether to crack a dude’s skull or shatter his spine. I grew up with Mortal Kombat. I can’t help the mentality.

But I have a feeling Sega is shooting for something subtler. Alpha Protocol is an RPG of sorts, allowing players to put Achievement Points in 10 different categories as they earn them throughout the game. There’s also the promise of a beefy dialogue system that will allow players to sway characters in the game through three different approaches -- suave, professional, and aggressive. Of course, there’s also choosing between physical approaches. Stealth, tech and violence will probably all have different impacts on the game’s progression.

Hit the break for the video. I promise mad judo kicks and a creepy one-eyed dude.

You'd better be sorry because... Well... Actually I don't know why you are sorry.

Looks neat, I guess.

This guy would probably disagree with the use of the word 'choice' in this context, at least based on that trailer.

But hey, the game looks like it could be fun, might keep an eye on this one.

"But I have a feeling Sega is shooting for something subtler."

I'm absolutely certain they are. Alpha Protocol is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, who made Neverwinter Nights 2, KotOR 2, and were going to make the Aliens RPG before it got axed.

Their games have been some of the best RPGs (story-wise at least) since Planescape Torment.

I thought this was being handled by Bioware, or by some of their guys or something. What's their relationship to Obsidian again?

Looks like they're getting inspiration (or stealing ideas from) Bethesda. What's up with that VATS looking system?

I'll wait to see more.

@JynxShot

Bioware makes a game with some cool new function or setting and Obsidian either makes a direct sequel without biowares involvement or makes a new game that rips off the other one.

Is Mortal Kombat the reason you decided to buff up? Because you're already more ripped than every character in that series, man.

Also, Alpha Protocol loks decent.. I just hope they don't pull another Mass Effect and fail miserably.

@Aurio - No, but that's a sweet thought. Johnny Cage is packing more ab action than I can hope to obtain.

Obsidian are made up of old hats from Black Isle and Troika (Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Arcanum), and took the reins from Bioware when they made Neverwinter Nights 2 and KotOR 2, most recently. Still some of the best writers in the business, and the best D&D stories since Torment.
