HI-YO!
$2 for that beard is worth it.
I genuinely enjoyed it for what it's worth. Not all of it, but enough.
The game was glitchy and nerfed and didn't have much going for it other than the narrative, but I enjoyed it somehow... beat it several times.
Of Course I just rented it.
But if you like screwing around with games and breaking them, then picking this up on sale is a good idea.
You can get special perks depending on which conversational stances you use, if you are pacifist, violent or in-between, some special conversational options, as well as which skills and weapons you use the most.
Dialogue is timed, you only one or two seconds to select an answer which creates a lot of tension, and you have to try to read a character very quickly - no "select the aggressive answer to win conversation". Sometimes getting a character pissed off at you is the best way to achieve your goals.
Unlike Deus Ex:HR, you really have to specialize, you don't get skill/praxis points so that you can max out everything, and you really have to learn how to play the character you created. Bosses in Alpha Protocol, unlike DX:HR have personalities, back stories and a motive for fighting you.
It has a large cult following...just look at the Penny Arcade forums for instance.
