Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Resident Evil and Silent Hill may be the most famous names associated with the genre, but when it comes to survival horror, one mustn't forget their roots. The name that planted the seed will soon be back -- and judging by this -- will be ready to show how much they have evolved for the better.

Watch as Producer Nour Polloni walks you through some of the possibilities at your disposal, during this tech demo of Alone in the Dark 5. Who knew that a little two-sided tape and everyday items could do so much, in a post 1980's world? I'd say that the spirit of MacGyver is alive and well, and just maybe... Atari and Eden games have a potential hit on their hands.

With the shakiness that Atari has experienced over the past couple of years, you could say that they know a little about the genre, themselves. I hope this one pans out for them.

Looks very cool and sounds like it'll be some very deep gameplay, but hopefully they leave the advancement of the game as wide-open as the item system is. Otherwise it'll just be a gimmick and the flavor won't last.

MacGyver: The Nightstalker

Yes, I know the joke was made twice, but I don't care.

We can also be very nasty.

Let's see what we can do with a bloodpack.. add sticky tape, pierce it and aim at your own penis. A perfect way to attract them all to one place.

Alone in the Dark (AitD) was my introduction to PC gaming - before that it was all consoles for me. While the puzzles in that first game were somewhat beyond the abilities of a 7-year-old mind, it was the first time I had ever felt truly immersed in a game's world. The books you read to gain backstory and clues, the foreboding atmosphere, the newspaper that came in the game box, everything gave you a 'feeling' that was more deep and real then anything I'd gotten from my NES. It's definitely the game that turned me into a lifelong gamer. And ever since then, I've always rooted for the AitD series to really shine again. Unfortunately, it looks like they're taking more than a couple pages from the Resident Evil series, and while they're fun games, they aren't exactly the immersive type of gaming I was hoping for. If they had made a game in NY with Cuthullu (ia!ia! lol) kinda like what Cloverfield's premise was, but with depth, I couldn't have been happier. Still going to buy it, but my hopes for the Metal Gear of horror games is probably not going to be happening...

I don't want an inventory sim.

I want a scary game.

Inventory juggling is not scary.

What, exactly was the point of the trail of blood? Sure, they sort of congregated around the broken blood packet, but why didn't they follow the trail? That's what any intelligent little rat thing would have done. She says that a trail is the perfect way to make them go in one place, yet the trail does nothing.

Also, the blood disappears and then reappears at the end of the trail.

Liquid pop-in's a new one, haven't seen that in a game before.

Am I intrigued? Yes. Am I sold? Not one bit.

Holy crap, i've got sticky tape around MY house. I never realised it was so dangerous. I better put it in a lock safe or something.

The game looks like it has a lot of potental though. The water running down the walls looked sweet. You can see why Atari are diverting their resources to this game, it really is a shot for them to be able to pay back their debtors :P Let's hope that Atari's problems don't have a too much an impact on the quality of this game (i.e. that they don't rush out something shit for a quick buck).

Looking good, but I'm still cautious after recent installments.

hope it translates well into a game, and otherwise they can just provide those techdemo-rooms so we can just play around and blow stuff up, preferably in MP :-)

The was a pretty solid tech demo. Looks like its shaping up to be a good adventure game. Hope everything plays well in the game. Looks like Silent Hill may have a competitor when this drops. Do us good Atari!
