Almost 50% of stores ignore ESRB ratings, according to undercover survey photo

The East County Youth Coalition, in conjunction with a number of other organizations has conducted an undercover survey to see just how often children can get their hands on adult-oriented videogames and the results are disappointing to say the least. Of over 60 stores nationwide, 46% had no problem putting games like Narc into the hands of eager kiddies. This isn't good.

We here at Destructoid have voiced our support of adult games many times in the past, but we agree that ratings need to be listened to in order for our arguments to be taken seriously. It's very well saying certain games aren't aimed at kids, but store workers need to pull their bloody fingers out and actually pay some attention. This isn't the videogame industry's fault, but it's certainly the industry that will get it in the neck, not the dumb twat at GameStop who was too busy thinking about how drunk he'd be getting that night to refuse sale of an M-rated game to a minor.

That's the crux of the issue here -- you can bet for sure that videogames themselves will be the focus of blame here when it's not really their fault. It's being claimed that kids as young as seven can get their hands on M-rated games without adult supervision near 50% of the time, something that is completely undermining the games industry in the face of angry parents and watchdog groups.

That said, no child of seven should be out buying games on his own anyway. Let's not forget the role of the parent in all this, as well. Seriously ... is it too much to ask that everybody grow themselves a bloody brain?

I see potential here. Maybe porn stores could combine with video game sales and form one awesome porn + M rated video game store.

I remember I was in Game once and a member of staff refused to sell a child an M-rated game. What did the child do? Give the game to his dad to buy for him. Right in front of the cashiers eyes! When the kids dad bought the game, no questions were asked...

@Aerox
I would be cool if they actually sold some sort of Porn/Videogame hybrid, I think its a market that isn't really tapped. The main problem is the perceived age of gamers(kids) vs the actual(average age 32, 39 in Canada).

@Mikey

There isn't anything wrong with that, if a parent believes that their child should be able to play a game, who is the Gamestop employee to stop him?

I remember the time I bought San Andreas at Target. I was 16 at the time, and the cashier asked me, "You're over 40 right? OK good. Allow me to 'confirm' your ID. Okee, here you go, have a poop day."

^_^ what a nice guy.

Sadly it's not in human nature to accept responsibility for societal problems, especially parenting.

This crap will keep on happening as long as parents aren't informed that letting their kids buy M-rated games is like letting them see an M-rated movie.

That's the only, repeat ONLY way to solve this. Ever.

How many arnie flicks had you watched at that age? people keep trotting out the whole parallels between cinema and games and i suppose it holds true. Kids want dirty violent stuff, and fuckin good for 'em i say.

Ugh, that is annoying to say the least. I agree, if we don't stick to store policies of not selling M rated games to minors then the attacks will continue on the gaming industry itself...and they will keep trying to propose further legislation. God forbid the parents just take responsibility, but since it seems impossible, we need retail employees to step up...

How sad is that?

Alot of it depends on the stores that these undercover purchases are taking place at. I mean, my normal experience at any store related to video games exclusively (such as EB games, or Game stop) has been that they do check IDs, but when I go anywhere that sells a wider array of merchandise I didn't tend to get that nearly as much. In fact when I was younger I'd make sure to go to Best Buy or Target for M rated titles because I'd have a better chance at not being asked for an ID.

and it's a simple fix. Use the british rating system! It's easier because there are ages 12, 15, 18. It's very easy usually to tell people apart of this age and if not the if they have no ID oh well. not our problem.

I have refused so many sales based on age.

Also I don't know what kind of punishment you guys get. If we sell games, dvd's or any rated media to a minor that it it not for and it's reported. Not only can we go to jail for 2 years but also suffer a £2000 fine.
This usually means shop clerks try harder to notice the difference.

The GameStop employees around here always point out to me when a game is rated M, even though I'm clearly old enough to buy it. Target or Best Buy never say a word.

That's a good idea, they should have the ages printed right on the box for parents who are too stupid and neglectful to do their homework.
