All Ubisoft in-house titles will now include subtitles photo

The never ending debate between anime-watching geeks is called "subs or dubs," or subtitles with original voices or dubbed with new voices. We take for granted that we have a choice. Ubisoft is thinking about the ones who don't.

In an effort to make games more accessible to the deaf or hard of hearing, Ubisoft will now include subtitles in all of their internally developed games.

"This commitment entails modifications to some of our game engines, as well as the inclusion of subtitles in the conception phase of game development," stated the company, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia and Shaun White Snowboarding will be the first titles to recieve the subtitle treatment.

That's pretty cool of you, Ubisoft.

HOORAY! It's about time! Although I wouldn't have enjoyed Assassin's Creed any more than I did, it would've helped a lot to have subtitles to understand what was going on. I don't like blasting the TV while I play video games (sometimes its late at night and I don't want to disturb people), so subtitles help!

Thanks Ubi! I hope more developers follow the same path.

About time!

I have always loved playing Valve's games with subs on and constantly wondered why so many other companies don't bother with the feature.

Hopefully this will become industry standard.

I was wondering the other day "Why don't games have multiple language tracks?"

I'd love to play Halo 3 or COD4 again in spanish.

Commendable stuff, Ubisoft. Just please let us inlarge or decrease the fonts in options (or atleast make them clear enough). We don't all have HDTVs, you know.

Different language tracks would be cool, but obviously, DVDs get more of that kind of thing, because films and tv series take up less DVD space, than say any game.

More games should do this, and make games more acceptable to deaf folk. Bravo.

Will the subtitles in Shawn White be black because of the snow? Because white subtitles would kind of defeat the purpose.

Ah Dale, no subtitle on the picture, I see what you did there.

Good on them. All developers should be putting subtitles in their games as standard by now. Despite having perfectly fine hearing, I still tend to play games with them on where available because sometimes you can miss things with iffy sound levels or when there is a lot going on.

Also, a selection of sizes please.

In the back of my mind, I always thought optional subtitles ought to be a prerequisite. Just don't make Dead Rising sized, HD-only text. Seriously fuck that text.

BaconCowboy: Are you making some kind of joke? If you are it failed, and why the fuck would you complain about the inclusion of subtitles? Are you brain damaged or something, it's not like they're being used instead of spoken dialogue.

I watch anything in captions if I can, but then I tend to look more at the subtitles then the show/game. D:

Quote of the year.

In other news, words now used in more than books, forum posts. Un-subbed news at 11.

My wife, a sign language interpretor, will be pleased to hear this. Get it? "Hear".

Does Shaun White really need subtitles? Are the single player cut scenes that dynamic?

Subtitles are great, and should be standard. I hope they'll also include multiple language tracks.

Subtitles are a step in the right direction, but fall short of the mark. Valve really got it right with their caption option, which cover not only spoken dialog, but text versions of sound effects and whatnot. They're very nice to have if you have hearing problems or simply can't turn up the volume for whatever reason. They give you a choice of either plain subtitles, or all sounds displayed as text.

Subtitles ftw. I use them all the time for TV programs even though I am not deaf. It helps me catch lines of dialogue and noises in shows like 'Lost' that give clues to what the hell is going on.
