All PSP games will be downloadable by October 1 (Update) photo

Sony is paving the way for its download-only PSP Go, ushering in a new era of downloadable gaming by claiming that "just about" every UMD game for the PlayStation Portable will be available for download on the PSN by October 1.

The news comes from Sony social media manager and chocolate gorgon Jeff Rubenstein, who stated that: "It's my understanding that just about everything hitting after October 1 will be available for download." He did add, however, that the availability of third party games were would depend upon the publisher.

It's going to be really interesting to see what impact the PSP Go has, if any. Its lack of a UMD drive could screw it over, with consumers unwilling to part with their original PSPs and UMDs, but unable to justify owning two versions of one system. That's certainly the position I find myself in right now. I would very much like to pick up a PSP Go, but I don't want to just throw my UMDs away or own two PSPs.

Sony, why must you continue to confuse and test the patience your customers?

[Update: Jeff Rubenstein contacted me to quantify his statement and address any concerns that may be had with this story. Hit the jump for a further explanation of Rubenstein's original quote]

"Your quoting of me (and reference as a chocolate gorgon) are dead on, but I think the wording in the 1st paragraph is confusing some of your readers (who were immediately contacting me for clarification). We were talking about new releases post-release of PSPgo. For the back catalog, expect the majority of exisiting UMD titles to be available for download via PSN around the launch of PSPgo as well."
Ta da!

I hope they get some kind of transfer tools ready before launch.

But I really want one of those PSP GO!s. They are sexy.

That layout looks almost playable...and my PSP does have a huge scratch in its screen.

If they put together some kind of UMD-to-Digital transfer service (like I've heard) then I'm definitely on board for getting a PSP Go, especially since the W-LAN switch on my PSP-2000 broke.

As long as the game prices are cheap to download, everybody wins.

What they REALLY need to do is to manage a way to add your current UMD games to you PS3/PSP download list. Like Rock Band 2 did with the rock band songs (for an additional price, of course).

I really will pick up a Go, my Fat PSP is on it's last hours =P.

I'll be picking up a PSP Go as my main media player until it's hacked. Until then, I've got a perfectly good CFW 2000 that barely gets any use as it is.

Also 16 GB PSP Go = $249, 16 GB iPod touch = $299. And the PSP Go! can play REAL games. I think you can guess which one I'd get.

Yeah, every game available REGIONNALLY meaning no imports will show up. :(

That would be awesome though, as some imports are pretty rare and expensive.

Pricing of the games is the biggest sticking point, ive not heard this mentioned anywhere....if my mate can get a UMD version of the game for £30 and i have to pay £39.99 on PSN id be pissed off!!!

I really like the look of the Go, but for 250 sheets in the UK? Bollocks to that - I'll carry on thrashing the daylights out of my 1000, thanks very much.

The homebrew community has already developed a UMD to digital program that just needs the disc and a USB cable to your computer, where you could store digital copies of games you own. I know that most PSP games at the moment can range from 65 or so mb up to a little over a gig for some titles. So the 16 gig internal should be good for a few games, but hopefully we can store more titles off the psp and switch when we want to via computer or PS3

Are you people out of your minds? You'd pay more money... for what? One ugly ass system with a smaller screen... no UMD drive... pointless slide out controls... and no improvement of controls? REALLY? You do realize you can download digital games and play them on your original PSP right? Right???

Thats, great, now we wont be able to have a cool videogame collection, wont be able to lend games to our friends (there should be something that forbid players to exchange games with each other, otherwise nobody would buy games, just copy from a friend), wont be able to buy used games, etc. Thank you Sony, its always nice to bitchslap all the gamers who kept buying your system even though it havent been showing a a decent number of good new releases since I cant even remeber anymore. All those people who bought the now outdated portable will be very happy to see that, from now on, the market will be directed to the TWO HUNDRED AND FOURTY NINE DOLLARS PLUS TAXES same videogame with a hd

Considering that the average PSP game is about 1.2 gigs, storage shouldn't be too much of a bitch, let's see how how they handle it though.

One word: Piracy. They don't make money when you pirate. And the fact that
1.They don't make money when you sell used games
2.They don't make money when you borrow games
Yes they're doing it for money but I don't expect the whole world to suddenly become a charity. But the prices ARE inaccusable especially with the way they don't convert prices. If it sells for the expected £250
250.00 USD = 153.13 GBP (The pirce it should be. £155-160 at most)
250.00 GBP = 408.21 USD (The price it's expected to be)
96.87 GBP / 157.79 USD Difference. That's fucked up.

PSP Go is growing on me, but I think in the long run I'd have to own two PSPs.

The very fact Sony haven't acknowledged the import games aspect says enough to me, that they won't allow us access to japanese DLC titles too.

Its a real shame, because rampant PSP piracy has now led to depriving us of import games. I say hang onto your PSP 1,2,3000's. I like owning import games too much.

My PSP 1000 is bricked, but I really don't want to have to pay a lot of money just to get my 22 PSP games on the PSPGO.

That name is more retarded then Wii. Why GO? why not Delux or something. GO sounds just... awkward.

I'm interested in the GO but the price point is questionable, especially when my PSP Slim with an 8gb card can do all that the GO can as well as play UMDs. Will the GO be region locked?

Thanks for the link, Dimly, but I don't trust Sony to deliver and be consistent with it. DSi was supposed to be region free too, but is region locked. PSP Go will more than likely be too.

They u-turned on us actually importing UMD games (wiki Lik Sang, if you must), and on the PS3 BC. I just can't trust them anymore, and I'm tired of getting burned by them.

That's why they keep the 3000 around. A lot of people want what the psp go won't do.

Get yourselves a nice little 16 go memory stick and you can do everything the Psp Go can.

I would buy the PSP Go under the condition that I can download Breath of Fire III, Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter, Mega Man Powered Up, and both Star Ocean Games. I like the idea of being able to download the games and not have to worry about discs, but what I don't like is the idea that I might have to buy these games a second time. I hope there's some kind of system that will allow you to download games for free that you already purchased.

You know, everyone said the same thing about the DSi. "No GBA port? 2 bad camera's aren't an upgrade!" etc. etc.... yet that thing is selling like pepperoni rolls.

This will sell too.

Yeah, well this would be more like a GBA with no GBA port than a DS with no GBA port. People with DS games can still play their DS games on a DSi. People with PSP games cannot play their PSP games on a PSP Go.

argh! This just keeps getting harder and harder.

They're adding every game to the library, making me able to get some of those old titles I missed out on, hopefully on the very cheap.

They will supposedly enable us to download Digital versions of our UMD's, but that's not really concrete.

16GB internal storage, with lots of room to grow. You can have probably anywhere up to 15 games on the system, depending on the size.

I'm just hoping that A) Somehow you can get a free download of a game you own via coding of some sort (Unrealistic yeah, but I'm just a dreamer). B) If not A, then the download games on the PSN would be MUCH more cheaper than their UMD counterparts.

I'd really hate to shell out another $30-$40 bucks just for a game I already own on a physical level. If it's $5-10, I won't have that much of a fit over it.
