All is not well in Vegas 2, online chokes
Gameboi03.23.08 - 4:54 PM 38 comments

All is not well in Vegas 2, online chokes screenshot
When I rushed home from the store the other day with Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (PS3 version) in hand, I couldn't wait to try out the multiplayer and see how much it improved upon the first. Much to my dismay, however, I was only able to get into two matches over a two-day stretch. At first, I figured it was just my PS3 and router fighting amongst themselves again. They've been known to tussle on occasion.

Thanks to a little research on the Internet, I'm now convinced that I'm not dealing with a flaky Wi-Fi connection. It seems that something is amiss in Vegas 2, and it has started to gain attention. Various users have reported a variety of bugs, but it's the inability to join games that's causing the big stir. Even though the servers are showing rooms that are not full, many attempts to join them are met with errors that a connection cannot be made.

Ubisoft is aware of the issue, and we're sure that a fix is, without a doubt, in the works. Unfortunately, this is of little solace to those of us who shelled out the $60 on day one, and expected a much smoother experience than this. This will most likely be over with by next week (thanks to patching), and I'm not half as pissed off as this guy obviously is, but to say that I'm filled with disappointment would be an understatement. Way to go, Ubi.

And I just got my copy of this last night too. Regardless, I tore into my copy and played a bit of the one player mode. I already created my character with my face..lol. And I'll try my luck online to see what's up with it.

But it already had a patch today. Ver. 1.10 so maybe they already fixed it already. I'll seek you out tonight if your on and willing to take it thru it's paces.

I dont understand why companies release their games AS public betas rather than actually hold public betas. 2k also does this amd all I get when I call them is a referal to their online FAQ THAT DOESNT EXIST. My Xbox is on DMZ so it cant be a connection problem on my end. That guy in the link talking about filing an ftc complaint is right. Rainbow 6 Vegas for the ps3 still only connects half the time and before I moved to this gen I tried to play GRAW online on the ps2 and after I reported connection problems and tried everything they suggested they just told me they will do what they can but don't expect to much support for the ps2 version

I've been playing mplayer on and off since I got it..there are instances where a ton of bugs appear, like models not having any textures, serious texture pop in, your guy displaying a generic player model instead of the custom gear you picked out. There is notable FPS drop offs in some of the maps as well. Then when you get into a server where everything is fine and dandy its quite fun :D Though I have a much harder time killing people in R6v2 then CoD4 :( and don't get me started on the nade spam :( my advice would be to find a server with frag/incendiary turned off.

That patch was there on day one. On and off, I spent the entire day trying to download it, but failed. It would get to 2% sometimes, and 5% other times. I eventually gave up, and was able to get it to work the next day with no issues.

I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and thought that Ubi's servers were under a heavy load with simultaneous updates.

These things have only been happening for "Next-Generation" games, if I recall correctly.

Yes I agree. This dependence on patching needs to be reevaluated by all involved. It screws the consumer until developers get their shit together, and that's just sad.
Aertyr's Avatar
Aertyr at 03/23/2008 17:20

It's not "Next-Generation Games" it's consoles. Console gaming still has no idea how to properly implement online gaming. There may be some companies/games who have had a decent amount of success with it in past but the console gaming industry is still seeing online as a "throw-in" rather then a core feature of the game. Patches are going to happen, because they still don't know what to expect and they won't for a while.

Since GRAW2 came out, I've decided to vote with my wallet and not support Ubisoft's lazy sequels. GRAW2 and R6V2 take place in the same locales as their predecessors. It was done that way so Ubisoft could reuse as many assets as they could and this is a really lazy development method. Turns out I'm even more justified in my decision to not purchase this game than I'd thought. People can say what they want about EA, but at least they're trying to change. Companies like Ubisoft are falling into EA's old habits.
Promagnum's Avatar
Promagnum at 03/23/2008 17:33

Not going to happen. With the introduction to online gaming to these 'next-gen (curse the term)' consoles its inevitable to continue, this was foretold some time ago.
Before, console developers had to rely on no hard drive space, so their product must be competent and complete. With the more graphic and code intensive games and new hardware, it's easier to release a product too early, get your money, then worry about it later - the safety net or bullshit time constraint.
PC games it was gradual, more so in the MMO world than anything else, but now it's for some reason accepted. Add that with shoddy PC game developers and you have shit-storm of patches waiting to happen.
Ubi (along with tons of other dev companies) are renowned for this, they've done this shit for years for PC titles, why is it so surprising they'd stop for consoles?
Hell - if there is a outlet to do it, most companies take advantage of it.

I can honestly say that I haven't had many issues with the online play, at least for the 360 version anyway. There are some times when I try to join a game and I can't connect, but this doesn't occur a majority of the time. Usually I can get in a game no problem with little to no lag whatsoever. If I create a game, none of my friends or randoms seem to have a problem joining up either. Is it just the PS3 version? Or is there something else amiss?

Quoted from EvilAvatar:

"PS3 R6 Vegas 2 Online Trainwreck
Apparently the PS3 has swapped places with the Xbox 360 when it comes to online connectivity issues. Joystiq has the heart-wrenching details:

Quote:
Our tip box has exploded with complaints from owners of the PS3 version of the game -- apparently, a majority of those who try to play online either can't connect or have to suffer staggering amounts of lag. We'd expect a bandwidth epidemic such as this to be patched post-haste -- we guess Ubisoft didn't anticipate we'd actually want to play their game on the first weekend of Eastertide. What, did they think those terrorists would hunt themselves?

Yikes. It's surprising to see this on the PS3. From what I've heard the PS3 usually has stable online releases, especially in light of recent Xbox 360 online issues over Christmas."

May want to correct the title of the post?

@Brainderailment: I bought my copy of call of Duty4 on release day. I played through 15 matches with not a single problem. Of course, this was the 360 version, so that might have been an issue

Yet another reason why this is such a shitty cash-in.

WTF ever happened to the days of yore when companies ACTUALLY HAD TO QA TEST THEIR PRODUCTS before selling them to the general populace? Any game that needs a patch within a week is a piece of shit. No argument possible.

I played all day today on 360, and i came across at least 4 people, my friend included, whose rank was reset back to level one.

Last night he was a Major. This morning, he was back at square one. They better fix this, and fast.

@Usedtabe:while brainderailment may have been exaggerating slightly, cod4 online bugs were rampant on the 360 for the first few weeks (maybe the ps3 too???). they were so common in fact that bungie/ms conspiracy rumors were flying around about cod4 threatening halo 3's dominance. having suffered through those initial bugs first hand, i know.

Good God... And when was the last time that a third paty game was actually good/better on the PS3? Specially Tom Clancy's games. Read your honest reviews before buying games. Xbox 360 FTW on third party games, specially Tom Clancy's games... Remember... at least for now.

@ gamerboi

if gamers don't have access to high speed internet a patch for the multiplayer r6v2isn't a big deal as they can't play the multiplayer anyway.

I would rather give developers the opportunity to improve their games through patching - bug fixes, loophole closing to eliminate cheaters, take advantage of firmare updates... Home and ingamexmb.

Good God... And when was the last time that a third paty game was actually good/better on the PS3?

Oblivion, Conan, Assassin's Creed (bugs on both consoles), etc. Opposed to what most think, most games play at least well on the PS3 as they do on the 360. It was just a fad to automatically assume that all games sucked on the PS3 compared to the 360 because people pointed out load times and some bugs... but ignored the fact that many of those same bugs occur on the 360 as well.

Oblivion doesn't count as it was released later on and had better frame rate, load times, etc. But Conan and Assassin's Creed better on PS3? Where you got that from? Last time i checked the reviews say otherwise. I'm not a fanboy I'm just saying the truth. And for those Tom Clancy's games you know they always make them better on Xbox for some odd reason. I remember the same problem for Chaos Theory on PS2 and Ghost Recon. Sports game... again, read the reviews. I'm just saying, maybe things are easier to make for the Xbox? Or Ubi prefers Microsoft?

i agree with FiXXXerx, this whole forum is full of fanboys and saying which console you prefer and which console is shit dosent matter. If you have a PS3,you're going to say it's better. If you have a 360,you're going to say it's better. Now,i have the ps3 version and they have already released a patch and now the game works PERFECTLY!! So plz stop going like "ps3 sucks it has shit games and lags all the time because-IT DOSEN'T! thank you and goodnight!
