All-in-one system seller sent to prison, fined photo

You know those stupid 69,000-in-one consoles you see at flea markets and street vendors? They're the ones that look like a Nintendo 64 controller and have several dozen NES games tucked away on some memory chip. Yeah, those pieces of crap. The guys selling those seem to be everywhere you go, don't they? Well, if the FBI has their way, they won't be for long.

One Oakland, Florida reseller was hawking wired and wireless models, both with over 70 games built-in, of the Power Player Super Joy III system for $24 and $48 dollars respectively. He probably thought he hit the big time when he received an order of 100 units at wholesale price. Unfortunately for him, the FBI placed the order.

Upon raiding his facilities, the FBI found that our reseller had earned some $400,000 selling about 8,500 units of this pirate console. If you subtract the $415,000 he was fined, it seems he got off a bit light. But throw in that 15 months of prison time, and things aren't looking so "Super Joy" anymore.

Have you ever tried playing one of these?

I like how right below the barrel of the semi-automatic handgun, there is an image of Obi Wan and Quigon fighting Darth Maul.

At my mall, they had a kiosk set up with a guy selling these things. And this isn't some sort of backwoods strip mall...my mall got rid of the arcade so they could fit more high-end jewelry stores and clothing "boutiques" that have a guy standing at the door who won't let you in if you look "questionable".

He was only around during the holidays, and disappeared sometime in January.

wow. i can't believe the FBI has time to investigate something so petty.

this kind of "piracy" does not damage the industry (lets be honest, even with an actual N64 controller, nobody is mistaking this for a nintendo product). in fact it gives kids from poor households the chance to play videogames, so i really can't see who has benefitted from this arrest, apart from whoever has taken that guys $415,000.

they play just like the real NES games, probably because they are the real NES game well, their roms anyway! The controllers suck though.

this in no way affects VG sales- unless nintendo is somehow getting royalties off of second hand carts. Leave the people alone if they aren't hurting anything

The main problem is THE CONSOLES DON'T WORK! They are essentially preying on little kids and unsuspecting parents and selling them faulty consoles. If you think people don't know these are officially licensed by Nintendo you are wrong, parents really do think they are purchasing the real thing for their kids, yes they are that stupid. The only one that works is the one they have set up for you to play. And when you go back to try and return the system, POOF the booth is gone. Yup I've seen it happen to a lot of people too, you know it when you see people with these systems in the bag the day after christmas walking around the mall in the same spot the cart was. Yes, I am all for poor kids playing video games, but there are plenty of other ways to go about doing that then this. Folks never trust anything sold off a mall cart!

I had one of those. Sorta fun. The games were in no way the famous system sellers of yester year, but I suppose good for the FBI for the crackdown on it.

I used to play those at display kiosks at the mall. I remember joining one dude for "round 100 or bust" in fake Duck Hunt in the clay shooting game.

I've played one of these at the mall. Half of their puported 69,000 games are just duplicates with different file names, and the other half don't work. They just make the system crash. It was a nice distraction, and I got to play the original game that Mario 2 was based off of, but if you couldn't smell the shinans from 10 feet away I guess you get what you diserve, consumer and seller.

when I was a little kid I bought one of these and enjoyed playing some of the games with my cousin... the nostalgia.

anyway if they are illegal then KFC has violated the law. I'm talking about KFC Dubai, they had prizes for buying food and one of those prizes was clearly a counterfeit system. my little cousin won one and hooked it to his tv. I told him that he has a PS2 so why the hell would he want something like that. Little kids always don't make sense.

I think Dyack initiated the sting when he realized that any 1 of the "1600 games" included were ultimately more engaging than Too Human.

I have seen these at my local mall as well a few months ago. I had a chance to play it for a few minutes and I was not impressed. 3 of the games I tried loading up wouldn't work, but the sales guy kept saying it was because the demo unit had been played so much. I said no thanks and walked away.

I have one of these. It has this huge cartrige sticking out the back, so the guy broke it and just left the chip hanging there. Wasn't much better though, because the slightest tap could turn the game off.

There was a guy selling these at a kiosk in the mall in Tulsa, OK a few years ago... One of my friends asked if it was legal, and he totally dodged the question. He was also russian or something, had a really thick accent. I reminded my friends that we already had all of the games on NOT emulators already so we went on our merry way.

My family had one of those things. Most of the games on those things are glitched copies of probably 100 games that work. It's pretty hard to find a game that works on those things .
