All hail the 10GB PSN game! photo

Looking to download Record of Agarest War from the PlayStation Network? Make sure you have some hard-drive space available, because this one's a whopper! The downloadable strategy RPG, originally a full retail title, will chomp up ten gigs of your HDD according to the game's North American publisher Asksys Games. Wow.

"I asked around, and it looks like the final size is going to be somewhere around 8-10 gigs," says an Aksys forum administrator. "It sounds like a lot, I know, but I’ve been downloading the debug ROMs at home to take the load off our office internet, and they only take a few hours–I usually start them when I leave for work, and they’re done by lunch."

The PSN version will include extra content over its retail counterpart, so don't think too hard about importing a physical copy. The game is also heading to Europe on the Xbox 360 as a disc.

Very strange. They have it on disk for Xbox, and just when they need a blu-ray for extra content, they go digital! (Do they have a bluray release??)

Awesome. It makes me wonder whether they use any kind of compression for the audio, or if they just use WAVs or FLACs.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if PSN/XBLA/Steam games use lossy compression for their audio?

If you get all 12 episodes of Siren that's nearly 8 gigs right? I guess the major issue here is actually having to download 10 gigs. If this keeps up maybe psn should pull a steam and let you pre-load things the weekend before release or something.

What Sony should do is allow for some background downloads when the damn system is powered off. I hate leaving my consoles on and doing nothing, regardless if 10gb would probably only take me an hour and a half.

To anyone who's been downloading DVD rips (for backup/emu, before you moan about piracy) of games, 10GB isn't really that much. Takes a fair while, I'll give you that, but 10GB really isn't that much.

Wow hour and a half... It would take me over 11 hours to download, so quit your bitching.

If you go to 'Turn Off System' under the "User" tab, it will ask you if you want the system to automatically turn off when it complete 'background tasks', referring to downloads and installing said downloads.

I've already got the retail release, although I might have to see about this if it has some decent extras. I know at least one of my friends will get it, and I can just leach it from them.

When Sony has a network that doesn't fucking suck and take way longer than it should to download games, then I will download 10GB games.

Its not the lack of space that is the problem.
Its the fact of DOWNLOAD 10GB of stuff over the internet.
Say bye to your speed if you have a download limit of 10GB.

Jim it must be your connection. Im able to download content from the PS Store at a reasonable speed. I pay 0.00 dollars a month for PSN so I don't expect it to download large amounts of data in seconds. Then again im old enough to have the patience to wait the extra five minutes.

Oh look, it's this argument again.

I have no problems with Sony downloads, Jim. They're as fast as any other network in my home - Live, Steam, etc. God forbid, there might be a problem on your end or with your ISP.

Maybe Jim should take responsibility for Jim on occasion.

I dont have a problem downloading anything on the psn either, I guess it's mostly the internet connection than the actual network.

Also, @x1251x the double sided, dual layered DVD can hold a little over 17GB

Is it really that much heavier? I looked around for a comparison and found that Burnout Paradise as a download is 3GB (just the original no updates) and the iso file for the dvd is 2.99GB. I just think they can make it fit with a little effort.

See, every digital release should strive to give us any reason at all not to want its tangible counterpart. At least it's not all bad news! (Never mind that I'll have to spread it out over a few days to keep from violating my invisible bandwidth cap.)

10GB is nothing if you've ever bought a recent game through Steam. At least with a PS3 (as opposed to a 360) you pretty much never have to worry about hard drive space, since larger sized drives are really damn cheap. Since changing out a hard drive is one of the easiest upgrades one could do to a computer, pretty much anyone should be capable of it.

I, on the other hand, will continue to enjoy my delicious physical copy of the game.

Jim, the PSN is pretty fast over here. I mean, a 10gb game is going to take forever anywhere, but I can usually get a 500mb game downloaded in 20 minutes or less.

"What Sony should do is allow for some background downloads when the damn system is powered off."

When the damn thing is powered off, it better not be downloading anything! Work of evil, it would be. You can tell your PS3 to shut itself down after all queued downloads complete, you can do that before you go to sleep or something. Next morning, voila, all content is d/l'ed *and* installed.

If you are concerned about the electric bill and you want your ps3 to have a special semi-dormant low power state while downloading, that's something else.

This is one of the reasons I don't think were ready for 100% digital distribution quite yet on consoles. While I do welcome it, I just dont think that the current speeds of the internet are really quite fast enough to make this more of a convenience than purchasing a hard copy. 10GB is nothing too, think of what Uncharted 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4, or even FF13 will be.

As far as space goes, upgrading your ps3 to a new hard drive is pretty freaking easy. I put a 300 gig in about a year ago and was painless.

Its a full retail game.

"Record of Agarest War is now coming to your Xbox 360 as a full retail product alongside the PlayStation Network verison in the Spring of 2010."

They are even considering a collector's edition.

I have no idea what Ghostlight is doing, but I don't get why people are having issues with this. How many gigs do the Games on Demand take up?

Want to download the game? Download it. Its about the same size as Mass Effect was when it was released on Games on Demand.

I hate digital distribution because of one reason... download speeds. I rented a high def movie off the PSN, took me roughly 23 hours to download it. I want to rent a movie to watch _now_ not _later_

@ zgerhard,

If you want to up your download speeds, stop using your wireless. With a wired connection I can download at roughly 1.2 to 1.3 megs per second. Nothing will take 23 hours at that speed.

You can hate digital distribution for various reasons, but that is certainly not one of them. If you're not setup properly to download things at a fast speed how is that anyone's fault but your own or your ISP? In which case, I'd contact your ISP.

Xbox 360 users only get the physical release. PS3 users only get the digital release.

If you want to get the retail version and are a PS3 user, your options are limited to:
A)Import the European version.
B)Bitch and Moan for them to release a retail version.
C)Buy an Xbox 360.

Wouldn't hurt making the consoles a bit bigger and slam a 3.5" HDD into them tho....

like everybody else has been saying, download speeds depend a huge deal on your connection. when i'm at home, a 1GB demo can take me upwards of 20-30 minutes to download, whereas when I'm at my university dorm using a wired connection, it takes less than 5.

Ok, if I am understanding this correctly PS3 users must download the game, and 360 users must buy it at retail. So since digital distribution is the wave of the future, and will save publishers tons, the PS3 version should be like half as much as the 360 version. Right?

And I'll start crapping out $50s in a minute. Unless its half as much as retail, I want my physical media. I was really looking to get it on the PS3, but I guess 360 is the way for me to go once again.

you're right I misread the press release that said: "PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system" as meaning its retail on both instead of retail for the 360 and download only for PS3. In the forums its clear its not coming retail for sony. Which makes the CE version pretty weird for a PSN title.

Its somebody's fault that its not on Blu-Ray. Either Aksys doesn't want to pay Sony to burn it on a Blu-Ray or Sony won't clear it since its not dubbed.
