All future SOE MMOs to hit consoles, also Everquest 3 photo

In a recent interview with MTV Multiplayer, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley revealed that all future SOE MMOs would be making their way to consoles and that some sort of Everquest title is in the works. The progression from PC to console is the result of clever coding that can be applied to both mediums with little trouble and apparently little cost.

From the interview:

...we developed our codebase such that the engine will run on across both [platforms]. So there was some up front investment, certainly, but we’ve invested in making sure that the technology runs on both. We’re adapting controls and some of the communication features but we’re trying to keep the same primary game.
When asked if it was safe to assume that all future SOE titles would be on a console, Smedley replied with a firm “Yes.” While an interesting statement on its own, it wasn’t until Smedley said that the popular MMO Everquest had “not seen its last game” that I got excited about the prospect of SOE doing console titles.

What do you guys think? Does SOE have the capacity to deliver a decent console MMO? Is there even a need for another Everquest yet?

[Thanks LordBane!]

EQ sucked. We just didn't know it because we had no other worthwhile alternative at the time. The only reason we all played was because of the community. The sooner we (and Sony) realize this, the sooner we'll stop seeing them beat this dead franchise to death.

I had a blast with EQ from 1998 to 2000. Before SOE moved in anyway, the game wasn't that bad.

I smell desperation. WoW giving you a good thrashing, eh? Try releasing a quality product for once instead of running where there's no competition.

I was horribly addicted to EQ when it first came out. Looking back, it was pretty crappy that I paid monthly for something that made you waste a lot of time on tedium. Nothing like spending the entire day to get a corpse, or staring at your spell book to med so slooooooowly. They really lead you by the hand these days.

Have any of you played Star Wars Galaxies? I'm not too ashamed to say I have. Okay, maybe significantly ashamed.

Dear SOE,

Stop Trying.

Love, Zen

I played SWG. It was kinda crappy, and I gave up before my free one-month trial kicked it. Learning to be a Jedi is boring as fudge.

I liked SWG before the first revamp. It was a huge free-for-all with Holocrons actually being rare and a ridiculous level-grind guessing game to unlock your force-sensitive player slot. It was quite crappy, but the community hadn't crashed so it was fun times.

Great. The bigger the player base, the better.

SOE has the DC MMO and I played it a bit at comic-con. Seemed pretty solid and I'm looking forward to having it on my PS3.

SOE managed to make Star Wars boring and spit in the face of continuity. SOE maintains a stable of horrid MMOs. SOE is a blight upon the genre of MMOs. They destroy worlds, I would not be surprised if they added Age of Conan to their library.
