The Aliens vs. Predator films essentially ruined everything for everybody. Beyond one decent fight scene in the first movie, they have offered nothing of relevance to the human race, instead bringing us only misery and suffering. Naturally, the fact that Rebellion's AvP game has a very similar setting to the first movie made me worried, and I had to ask project lead Tim Jones just how similar to the horrid films this game would be.
"The game plot does feature the discovery of ancient Predator ruins and the unleashing of Aliens, but beyond that it really plays out very differently," he assured us. "While it takes place in the same universe as the
AvP movies, that is [also] the same universe as the
Aliens and
Predator movies -- and our game takes place around 30 years after the events in
Alien 3. That allows us to feature all the elements that we love the most: being far from Earth, the Colonial Marines, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and, of course, the Aliens and Predators themselves."
That's a good start, at least. The fact that the films had to set Aliens vs. Predator in a contemporary setting so that they could have angsty teenagers in the sequel was really quite pathetic, totally against everything the Aliens movies were about, and typical of how Hollywood operates. Still, I had to know more about Rebellion's opinion on the movies, so asked Jones what he honestly thought about them.
"I thought they were fun and they have introduced a new generation of fans to the franchise. It is unlikely that we would have had the opportunity to make this game if they had not been so successful."
Well ... if AvP turns out to be the brilliant game I'm hoping it'll be, then I guess I could forgive the Hollywood abominations just a little ... just a little.
I didn't think the plot of the first movie was inherently flawed...I more thought it was the characters and setting that ballsed it up.
So to have a similar plot, but 30 years after Alien 3, makes me happy.
I don't buy the AvP movies as cannon either. The whole "we first met Aliens in 2006 but we retconned it with a nuke" plot was fucking pathetic. I'm much happier believing that AvP and AvP 2 never happened.
I could also stand to believe Resurrection didn't happen either.
That would be an awesome feature.
Lets just admit that Fox really fucked up the franchise. Alien3 is still watchable but it could've been absolutely fantastic if Fox didn't interfere as much.
Now that's a function that would work well with the whole PS3 'Six Axis' whatnot..
Alien Resurrection never happened in my mind. How Joss Whedon got away with that awful script is beyond me. Ha ha! Women wasting all the ammo...aaah, so witty.
We also got a few badass posters.
I've pretty much tried to wipe the memory by watching Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 over and over until the taint of crap that is known as AVP 1 & 2 is gone.
The memory of those horrible, horrible pieces of crap are mostly gone now. Mostly.
Natal all the way. Who needs a controller when you can hump the air?
I recently watched both AvPs and it honestly seems like they had meetings like "How can we make this even crappier?".
"I thought they were fun and they have introduced a new generation of fans to the franchise. It is unlikely that we would have had the opportunity to make this game if they had not been so successful."
You know he really thought they were giant piles of dogshit like everyone else.
Yes, it was actually a whole expanded universe of AvP that existed long before the AvP films were even concepts. It all started with a wink and a nudge from film Predator 2 where you can spot a Xenomorph skull in a Predator's Trophy room.

This isn't exactly new news. Rebellion's been pretty vocal about how they're using the original movies (not really the new AvP films) for their inspiration. Anyone who caught my "5 Reasons To Be Pumped About AVP" about a month back is already in the know.

Oh, & don't worry about Resurrection. It isn't real. It never happened, just a vicious rumour that was spread around....No, really.
Yep. That's what I saw too.
Dodged that bullet like his name was Neo.
Same here, if it's got aliens or zombies I'm gonna click on it.
@Yehat
Fuck yeah,I always found it Awesome how such a simple idea gave me the impression that the alien/ universe was so much bigger.
Any ideas as to what the other species are?
