Aliens vs. Predator unbanned in Australia photo

Evil Attorney General Michael Atkinson may have claimed that Australian gamers don't "need" to impale people with Xenomorph tails, but it seems that they're going to get to do it anyway. In a stunning move, Sega has actually managed to win its appeal and overturn the decision to ban Aliens vs. Predator in Australia.

AvP will get the country's MA15+ rating, the highest rating a game in Australia can attain. Furthermore, it will get that 15 age rating with NO edits made to the content. Predator decapitation, first-person secondary jaw attacks, and plenty of impalement are on offer, and Australians will get all the blood-soaked glory.

Great, and surprising, news. This game will likely be far more gory than the still-banned unedited version of Left 4 Dead 2, yet it somehow got through. Perhaps a signal that change is in the air?

Suck it down, Atkinson!

I still don't understand how despite the fact L4D2 seems relatively tame in comparison to eviscerating Marines as an Alien and tearing off heads as a Predator and yet L4D2 had to be edited out for gore and AvP not so.
I'd like to say 'change' but I don't have nearly enough that much faith to believe that.

Good for Australia. What I don't get is the reasoning behind the 15+ system. It seems that if they had a 17 or 18+ rating they could still "protect the children" from games they deem unfit.

Ah, this isn't exactly how I meant to word this, but I'm tired.

Wait what? Woah, to be honest I'm suprised this got through with a 15, but it's awesome news for Aussie gamers.

This is my favourite for FPS of 2010.

Will be hard for Rebellion to fuck this up based on their past experience with the franchise and how amazing it already looks.

Wow, this is nuts. Not that I don't think Aussie gamers should be able to play this, or any other game, but there's no way the new AVP is suitable for a 15 year old. I didn't think it possible, but the Australian ratings system has just made itself look worse.

You just know that this will be jumped on by those who make a great wailing and gnashing of teeth about unsuitable games being available to minors.

Australia is asking its citizens for their opinions on changing the law to include 18+ games.

Suck that, Michael Atkinson.

@ RIMoonlight - LFD2 was submitted twice, once as the original game and a second time with edited content. Once the censors had deemed the edited version to be okay, they were unlikely to revisit the original.

With AvP, the developers had the balls to say "our way or no way". Good on them. Also, countdown to Michael Atkinson formally protesting this in 3, 2, 1...

The Review Board unanimously determined that Aliens vs Predator should be classified MA 15+ with the consumer advice “Strong science fiction violence”.

The Board noted that “the violence depicted in the game can be accommodated within the MA 15+ category as the violent scenes are not prolonged and are interspersed with longer non violent sequences. The violence is fantastical in nature and justified by the context of the game, set in a futuristic science-fiction world, inhabited by aliens and predators. This context serves to lessen its impact. The more contentious violence is randomly generated and is not dependent on player selection of specific moves.”

Got that from the Kotaku AU article.

Makes me hope that people will see how fucking broken our system is and the rest of the civilised world hasnt plunged into Darkness and Chaos because they have ratings for Over 18's...

Swear to god we've gone from being the laid back country who never gave a shit, to the uptight Poms we used to hassle long ago...Sometimes I'm ashamed to live here.

@Squidoris: For awhile some thought it was canceled alongside Aliens RPG. The dev confirmed it wasn't canceled but said updates would be slim to none until AvP was released.

And another sign of the apocalypse appears, the end is near indeed!. Congrats to Aussie gamers but remember that this is the exception to the rule, unless you keep working for change this will probably keep being the only game you'll get in it's original form.

Fantastic - we get Aliens Vs Predator. Wow. What a weight off my chest.

In other news, we Australians are getting a COMPULSORY INTERNET FILTER. You know, in the same manner as CHINA. You know, in order to "save the children". And don't think you can opt out of it even if you have no children in that house - oh no,

Faaaaaantastic people. Of course this won't succeed - over 90% of Australians oppose this filter. Oh did I mention that the list of banned sites or "blacklist" is secret and secretly determined by a panel of secret government employees with NO public scrutiny?

For you Americans, imagine if your voluntary classification board (which has no official power), suddenly gained the right to decide that anything rated R or above was suddenly illegal for you to see. That's what they are trying to do in Australia. Well, it's what ONE man is trying to do - Steven Conroy (or Comrade Conroy as we like to call him) - our communications minister and an utter idiot of the highest order, who understands absolutely nothing about the internet, yet is given the power to control it.

Of course, this filter will not succeed. On a technical level it cannot possibly process the hundreds of sites made every single day, and it cannot possibly block all the "bad" sites (although what the government determines to be "bad" is again, secret).

You know, in the past 2 days or so China launched a crackdown on "morally harmful" sites. Looks like The People's Republic of Australia will be doing the same next year. And to think my maternal grandparents LEFT China to get away from this sort of thing.

Comrade Conroy obviously thinks that Australian citizens cannot be trusted to monitor their kids. So he's offering to be our parent for us - our overseer as a matter of fact! Save us glorious comrade conroy! Save us from ourselves! Because the best course of action is to let the GOVERNMENT determine what's moral and what's not moral and to determine how we raise our children!

Yes it's the Government's job to protect kids you know! And raise them too! I certainly want my tax dollars to be used to do the job parents are supposed to!

There's two things you can take away from this:

1) Either our government is developing control freak tendencies or
2) Our government thinks we're all idiots and need the benevolent guiding hand of the supreme people's bureaucracy to lead us, LEAD US TO SALVATION!

BACK TO YEAR ZERO! TO A MORE MORALLY PURE TIME! THE STATE SHALL BE OUR SALVATION!

Look, it's great that you Aussies get the unedited version of the game, but isn't this going to complicate things in terms of ratings? It's rated for age 15 and up, when most other Western parts of the world (along with the developer) that the content is for those 17/18 years old and up. I'm glad you're getting the game, since I'm never in favor of censorship, but I can't see how the game is appropriate for that rating.

A scandal like this is just the thing that can get the general population of Australia up in arms about not having an 18+ rating.

It's funny that Australia and Brazil are two countries whose government opposes virtual violence, compared to their ancestors. Every white person in Australia (except for the people who migrated there over the years) are the descendants of murderers and thieves. Most white people in Brazil (with the same exception) with any money or power are the children and grandchildren of SS Nazi's fleeing persecution for crimes against humanity. Brazil is currently violent as hell, lots of kidnappings, and in some cases the government sponsors it.

@ Necros: that's the problem; right now games like Madworld, GTA IV, Fallout 3 and Gears Of War 2 are all playable here as long so you're 15. An R18 rating would change that I'm sure. That's the point that people are missing out on... gamers aren't looking for "more" violence or sexual content; we just want an appropriate ratings system. And right now, that ain't what we got.

@ SnatchTease - actually, you're very wrong. Convicts were a relatively small portion of white migrants. Most were settlers, particularly from Ireland & Scotland earlier on, then later from Europe (gold rush era, post various wars etc).

Partially because of that, it's now considered a novel piece of family pride to be descended from a convict in Australia :D

I'm quite impressed by Sega's backing of Rebellion's decision to refuse an edit for Australia and even moreso that they accomplished a rerate.

I hope that some more well-known studios can muster up the ball strength to tell Australia to fuck off, then get a rerate, and lend credence to the claim that this might change their ratings system. All in the interests of our gaming friends in that place down and below something else.
