Aliens vs Predator multiplayer details: It has a horde mode! photo

Rebellion has been showing off all sorts of Aliens vs. Predator stuff at Gamescom, which is an event I'm not attending, so I assume they're doing this just to taunt and mock me. Still, the news coming out of the show is great, so I won't complain too much. Like this bit of news -- AvP is getting its own "horde" mode.

Teams of four players work together to fight off endless swams of Alien attackers in what Rebellion is calling its "Survival Mode," similar to the Survival Mode of Left 4 Dead or the aforementioned Horde Mode from Gears of War. It's unclear whether the co-op teams would play as Marines or Predators, but that sounds like it'll be a very cool mode.

As far as the main multiplayer goes, the game will support up to eighteen players, and one mode will feature mixed species teams, as well as pure species. I'm guessing that means Marine/Predator alliances, since I can't exactly imagine the Xenomorphs being buddy-buddy with anyone. If you're playing on PC, the game will also use Steam Cloud so players can transfer save files to other machines. Anti-cheat matchmaking Achievements will also be in place for Steam gamers.

Every new detail I hear about AvP makes me scream out for more. It's just a shame that in space, nobody can hear me scream.

I'm really trying not to get excited for this game, I just hope it doesn't break my heart.

This mode was in AvP or AvP2 (I forget). So Horde mode is more like AvP :P

I really hope this turns out as good as it sounds. The idea of wave after wave of aliens is pretty exciting. It'll be like that scene from part 2 when they weld themselves inside that room and they come through the ceiling. Oh man, please, please, please be good...

Slightly off topic, but who the FUCK decided that Gears was the first game to have 'horde' mode?

Goddamn that pisses me off.

Horde mode is to console fanboys what Halo was to the FPS. Even though tons of other PC games have had skirmish and invasion and what not, when it comes on a console game such as Gears and its called lets say Horde, now that's what skirmish is known because the console boys have no idea what else to call it. Hey did you guys know the very first AvP (PC) game had horde mode?

Whether or not Gears invented Horde mode is irrelevant. It's now the recognizable standard when it comes to this type of gameplay. Use of the term resonates with more gamers, hence why it makes sense to use.

I'd rather it be like Nazi Zombies instead of Horde mode from GoW2. or Survial mode from L4D.

18 players? Seriously? What is this 1995 all over again? Hopefully this is the limit on consoles, because PC should support 32.

Heyy I missed this mode from AvP 1. I wonder if it'll just be the multiplayer maps flooded with AI enemies or they'll have maps with a little more direction like the bunker map from AvP 1. For the record yes you could play cooperatively with 7 others in that mode as both Marines and Predator and I think even Alien which could get confusing.

@ThEgg

I was about to say that's a rather pathetic number but if the PC version is the port that probably means all the game files will be self contained in a single un-decompressable file making any sort of significant modification impossible unless they completely reverse engineer it.

Goodo. Used to be great fun playing this in AvP. It is pretty insulting referring to to horde mode though. But if Alone in the dark can regularly be called a Resident Evil clone I guess series heritage is pretty meaningless

I cannot wait for this game! I remember playing horde mode on the original AvP before horde mode existed and playing way past my bed time

Oh,man.Alien:Colonial Marines better have amazing single player campaign.Otherwise, people will just buy AVP instead.since Alien:CM will be like AVP without predators.

I can't stop wondering why can't they just do AVP and Alien:RPG in the first place.

I play alot of splitscreen and the whole Left4Dead/GOW2/Resistence 2
thing is awesome! I can't stand competative multiplayer. I have
enough issues with smarmy, racist, sexist A**** in real life, I
don't need them killing me 5 seconds after I respawn. YAY!
