Some may claim that the Aliens and Predator franchises are dead, but the apparent success of the Aliens vs. Predator demo seems to indicate that there are a lot of fans left in the world. According to Rebellion, AvP has been downloaded 14,000 times on Xbox Live alone, which is pretty decent, considering it's not had a lot of major coverage.
I'm legitimately surprised by this, however. I've barely been able to find a match on the 360, and when I have, it's usually some bullsh*t like a one-on-one round. The PC has a lot of healthy, full matches going, but I figured nobody was playing the 360 version at all. Still, those that are playing it seem to like it. Rebellion proudly notes that the game has a Live approval rating of 4.5/5 right now, and I know all about 4.5s!
In any case, AvP is out this month, and the first review from Game Informer gave it a 5.75. I expect quite a few reviews will treat the game poorly, while a small handful will "get" what the game is really about and love it. From my demo experience, I appear be among the brave and the few. We'll get our review out there as soon as we get the game and can enjoy all the multiplayer modes.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is why I read Destructoid every day
that is all.
"In any case, Assassin's Creed II is out, and the reviews from across the board are in the 9s and 10s. I expect quite a few reviews will rate the game as it deserves, while a single videogame journalist will fail to "get" what the game is really about and hate it. From my experience, I appear be that brave journalist."

Come on, you know you chuckled.
If he doesn't like the game, fair enough.
Saying that there's too much stealth in the Predator campaign, and you fight too many Aliens as the Marines are not valid complaints.
Like you said Jim, You need to get what the game is about. It's not run and gun. You have to learn it. Seeing as the majority is filled with idiots who can't learn left from right, AvP3 is destined for some flak.
The Game Informer review proves it.
at this point, i don't think any review could dissuade me, even if it comes with a horrifically mediocre score. aliens, predators and the core gameplay in the demo is enough to sell the game to me twice.
Where's the evidence? Where's the detail?
I'm looking forward to the 16th/17th. Can't wait for the SP... and can't wait to bust out the Predator Hunt, Infestation, and Survivor game modes.
Absolutely, but if this review is any indication, that won't be the case with AvP. I have no problem with GI's decision to score AvP with that number (except the silly .75 nonsense) but I do ask that a reviewer does more to explain the score than simply say "it's crap because I don't like it and it's crap."
His arguments seem to indicate that he hasn't played an AvP game before. Complaining about walking on walls as an alien, or using stealth as a Predator, when these are the things that made the first two AvPs so successful. He even says the original AvPs were "critically acclaimed" but doesn't say he played them himself.
It's GI's review and as a fellow reviewer, I respect the score. I just don't think the writing that accompanied did a fair job of explaining the score.

The review honestly is a poorly written review. Not to mention the reviewer has been getting raped like a mofo because of his review. I think it's pretty hilarious.

One of the biggest complaints seem to be the graphics, which is silly. It's not super beautiful but it's not ugly either. And also, the demo doesn't use DirectX 11 so we're not seeing it at full capacity.
Other people don't like the Alien controls, but I think they're just fine. It just requires you to have some spatial awareness and remember where you are on the map.
Others don't like the backstab stealth kills. A fair point, but that's for people who prefer run-and-guns. AvP is a game about opportunism and sneakiness, not face-to-face shooting. If you don't get with that idea, you won't like AvP.
On second thought, I suppose it doesn't really matter, since I've never seen the two scores differ by more than a half a point before. I mean, I like the idea of having two opinions for every game, but they're almost always the same opinion, with a slightly different number to convince people that it's authentic.
But to be honest i was expecting some tighter controls for the aliens ...similar to AVP2. i can forgive no crouch...but no pounce?!?!? the wall walking is a little awkward too. I preferred it when it was a toggle
It was still pretty fun overall, but i think i pumped it up so much in my own mind that it was going to be awesome before playing it for myself.
i think that if you played a lot of avp2 multiplayer (particularly the alien), you will be a little bit dissapointed.
focus jump is bascially pounce without the 'sploding
Yes Im an Aliens fanboy (I have the Colonial Marines Technical Manual) so this game gets at least an 9.75 from me. AT LEAST.
Too much stealth not a bad thing? How bout if your doing it over and over along the same linear path without change? Too many aliens in the marine campaign. Imagine shooting the exact same Aliens around every corner? Oh look, theres one shoot it.
I havent played the game, so i could be very wrong. I wish it were StarBreeze (Riddick) studios working on this franchise.
how about you read the review before you comment on it?
it really is a poor review, whether or not it's accurate is another matter. the problem is that the criticisms made in it are unsubstantiated and undeveloped to the extent that anyone with knowledge of the previous games, the film franchises or even just modern games in general aught to be suspicious of it.
The weapon balance sucks. (EX, flamethrower is worthless, plasma cannon is stupid (takes energy AND is slow AND does low damage), the javelin is painfully slow, etc.)
The muzzle flash of the assault rifle basically obscures the whole damn screen, yet it is only minimally visible if another marine is firing.
The PC controls are absolutely terrible.
The release of deathmach was colossally stupid.
The melee system and blocking mechanic is horrid (at least on the pc).
The fact that you cant mute other players mics in the lobby is idiotic.
Trophy kills are just stupid and unfun in general.
Ultimately the game might be fun in the horde mode or the campaign but there's nothing about it that is really new at this point, nor is there a huge refinement on a formula that is worth writing home about.
"having to fight off a horde of Xenomorphs for the 100th time, the repetition drowns the experience. "
in most shooters that would indeed be seen as a negative aspect. Yet, somehow our angry AvP crowed defends this.
Watch predator and see how he lurks and hides and uses stealth whilst hunting.
Watch aliens and see an entire colony killed to create a legion of aliens that attack in hordes.
Finally watch how those movies portray the fragility of man against species way more lethal than us.
Perhaps you may think im putting to much thought into it but i don't have a single problem
with how this game is described and it seems to me this game has been created with all the best elements of the movies.
If you disagree that's fine, each to their own.
He used one sentence for the multiplayer. Could you imagine them reviewing the latest Halo, Battlefield or COD and doing that? It'd be just as ridiculous to do so.
He complains about the fact the Predator is stealthy and the Alien can climb on walls which he can't get the hang of? Took me two days and I'm running all over the place upside down with ease.
I just wonder how long he played since it's not one of the "big" titles compared to ME2, Bioshock 2 and so on and just made quick summary of his thoughts towards it.
The reviewer seemed to complain more about the atmosphere rather than the game mechanics like you did.
Oh I'm sorry, do you fight fifty different enemies in MW2, Farcry 2, BFBC2, Stalker, Shattered Horizon, or UT3? No, it is the same enemy presented to you in different ways, with different gameplay dynamics and varying scenarios.
@:Res Judicata: People like the game because it's good, and your complaints are nothing but opinion. While the Flamethrowers DOES suck, the weapon balancing is fine. The Javelin is slow because it pretty much destroys your enemy if you hit them, the Plasmacaster auto-locks and fires 1-hit kill blasts, I don't know why you think its stupid that it would require energy and be slow to lock on.
I have no issues with seeing past the muzzleflash, try adjusting the brightness/contrast of your tv and game, you might have the settings to high.
The PC controls are fine, try playing more than a few games. Also check out my blog if you are interested in any tips on how to play. The melee and blocking work great if you have decent server host and you aren't hindered by lag. If you are lagging even a little bit then yes its a bit bullshit.
I also agree that choosing FFA was the worst decision they could have made. TDM would have even been a better choice. The matchmaking and lobby is very barebones and hopefully they will update it to have a few more options like muting players.
Trophy kills ARE fun, you just need to learn how to not be a victim so easily.
@Overdoze:"i think that if you played a lot of avp2 multiplayer (particularly the alien), you will be a little bit dissapointed."
I have to disagree. I played a lot of AvP2 back in the day and I think the Alien is better than it has ever been. It's less about flying at your enemy with massive leaps and more about stalking and choosing your moment to attack, and I like this intensity much more than the AvP2.
It might work great with a controller instead of a keyboard, but i havent tried it on xbl.
Aside from that, the fact that you CAN'T remap keys that aren't primary keys for all 3 races is incredibly idiotic as well.
The game does have potential, it's mostly mechanical reasons that it isn't good, but it's just not a refined experience.
