Aliens: Colonial Marines depends on success of AvP photo

Here's some marginally concerning news for anybody looking forward to Aliens: Colonial Marines. Despite being announced long before Aliens vs. Predator, Sega has now stated that the release of Gearbox's co-op Xenomorph shooter will hinge directly on the success of Rebellion's crossover effort.

"I think the detail of that [release date] is probably still too early," explains Mike Hayes, Sega president and COO. "What I would say is it’s unlikely that we’d launch anything within six months [of Aliens vs. Predator], but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly. Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot of is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP is at the box.

"It’s what level of ‘well’ does it do, do we then determine when we want to bring the next one out and then, of course, determine what the third one in the series is likely to be."

This is slightly annoying news. Colonial Marines was originally looking to be on track for an early 2010 release, but has apparently been frozen until further notice. That's a shame because I was looking forward to having a "pure" Aliens game to go with my AvP. Still, the good news is that Sega is clearly looking to make Aliens a running game franchise, with Hayes' talk of a "third one."

So, the fate of Colonial Marines is now up in the air. Now, when are we going to hear more about Aliens DS?

I think AvP will be a big success; it's a well known franchise and it's looking like a quality title. I'm still sad about the cancellation of the Aliens RPG though.

Tips for making AVP good:

Do not associate them in any way with the shitty movies

Copy and paste, update AVP 2, which was a HUGE hit

Done: they'll sell enough for it to be considered a success.

Zantesomething-

I just think they dont want to have two alien games compete with each other...makes sense, it's a bummer, but it makes sense

This is bullshit. I couldn't care less about AvP, but Colonial Marines is the game I've been dreaming of since I was eight and saw Aliens for the first time. Now it might not even come out, unless a tangentially-related game from the same publisher does well first? Once again, I call bullshit.

I feel the same, Death. Sega should have more confidence on their product and those creating it. I too have dreamed of being a space marine after Aliens, and all those cool weapons and equipment you'd be able to use.

I hope AvP pans out toon, especially after previous games on PS2 and PSP. What worries me is that th AvP films have been crap, and broken the IP and its cannon. Whether they get it right for the game will prove interesting, but judging by the videos I've seen so far, it looks promising. Roll on Feb, 2010.

Sega have been dicking around with the Aliens franchise ever since they bought the license. They were quick to buy it up, but slow to figure out what to do with it. I mean all we've had are cancellations, delays, rumours of pulling Gearbox off A:CM, etc. Then suddenly they announce AvP, which wasn't even part of their planned Aliens line-up in the first place.

Let's face it, AvP is going to bring in more money than A:CM. You got what's essentially 'more bang for your buck/quid' and that makes A:CM a little redundant, despite a lot of fans wanting a normal Aliens vs Marines game.

All in all, it's a shit business.

I believe Colonial Marines was about 1/2 done or better before they switch over to AVP. Development wise I don't think it would take much to finish Colonial Marines, it's not like they have to start from scratch. The only reason AVP wouldn't do well is if it was unpolished or considerably lacked the fun of the original PC games.

I think part of this is to avoid over saturation.
You don't want two games coming out at the same time named "Alien(s): ..."

But there's still chances that some people will think that AVP game is a crappy movie tie in of the movies just like that PSP game.

Die hard fans alone won't be able to boost the sales really high.
Maybe Sega is making all the fans to buy AVP first instead of waiting for A:CM's later release.I think A:CM will still comes out and AVP sales will one way or another effect A:CM coming out earlier or not and the Third project which I shamelessly hoping for it to be an RPG.

They should have just make different genres for each projects from the start, they could have easily do the RTS like AVP:Extinction on PS2,that game never had any multiplayer skirmish mode which is confusing.I'd still buy even if it is a party game titled Viva Xenomorphs:Party Aliens or an alien breeding game. The possibilities is endless to breed a new sub-species everyday. It'll be like Spore but with r*ping.

As much of a Predator fan I am, I'm also dying to play as a Marine and gun down some bugs. If Sega would release Collector's Editions of both games, I'd buy them. It's already spent money, as far as I'm concerned.
