Aliens: Colonial Marines canceled ... for DS? (Updated) photo

We all know by now that Sega canceled the intriguing Aliens RPG that it had on its books, possibly to make way for Aliens: Colonial Marines and Aliens vs. Predator, both due out in 2010. However, did you know that it also axed a DS title that was in the works? We did not, but a new video has appeared on Youtube showing footage of the allegedly dead game.

The current rumor is that this game is actually complete, but Sega shelved a release due to financial reasons. Looking at the footage, that would appear to be a real shame, because it seems like it would have been great fun. It's a scrolling shooter, very much like Alien 3 on the Mega Drive. The video shows a Power Loader battle with the Alien Queen, and a few incredibly ludicrous boss battles against what looks like a Space Jockey Alien and what may be a Rhino Alien or something equally pulled from the Kenner series of Aliens action figures.

The game is called Aliens vs. Marines by whomever posted the video, although the in-game logo reads Colonial Marines and it was apparently created by Wayforward in association with Gearbox Software. Whether or not that's true, we don't know, but we've asked Gearbox ourselves to find out more.

Check out the video after the jump, and join me in being a little disappointed that this game might never see the light of day.

[Update: When contacted for comment, Sega told us that it "doesn't comment on content published by other parties." If you attempt to watch the video now, however, you'll see that Sega certainly didn't mind commenting on it to Youtube, as the video has been taken down following a copyright claim. That more or less confirms the game's existence. We are still waiting for Gearbox to speak, and have been forwarded to "relevant people" within the studio for a possible comment.

We've added the video again, re-uploaded to GameTrailers, for anybody who missed it. Also, for laughs, we've embedded the full music video for the song "Requiem" which is used in the DS footage. You NEED to watch that, because it is hilarious.]

Wtf? These vid looks realy cool! Had have been somting special in the ranks of Ds games. They should have name it: Nitendo ds Aliens puppy love so it wouldnt had been canceled. Every mature tittle on ds has a hard time ,thats really bugging me since iam 29 and all these princess love, baby pet doctor games are the majority.

That looks great, except for the Aliens looking like they were having sex with the Marines rather that ripping their brains out. The DS needs more games like this, too bad it was cancelled.

I should point out that the music the video used is my new favorite song in the whole fucking world.

Is there an online petition I can fill out? This game actually looks like the first really fun DS game in years.

I think that "Elephant Alien" was really a "Space Jockey Alien." Check out the background during that fight. Shame about the game, it looks like it could have been fun.

I think you're right. I didn't notice the Jockey in the background. Will edit that. <3

Noooooooooooooooooooo!
Why god WHY!

First you put Colonial Marines on Indefinite Hold. Then you straight up CANCEL the one i was looking forward to the most the ALIENS RPG. Now you refuse to release a near complete DS Aliens game?

WHAT HAVE WE DONE?!??!

Our only hope is to have AVP3 do INSANELY well - then maybe all of these projects will be fast-tracked, resurrected and released.

I'll have to make a video on this soon - I demand everyone buy 3 copies of AVP3, so that this may happen!

I wonder ... did GTA's lackluster sales and the whole "adult games don't work on a DS" business have anything to do with the decision?

I don't really understand how you could cancel a finished game for financial reasons. I mean, most of the money that goes into producing a game has already been spent, hasn't it? Wouldn't it be worth it to go the extra bit and have a chance at recouping some of your costs than have no chance at all?

Dexter: I'm guessing it takes a lot more money to physically manufacture, package, localize and then market the game as well. Obviously someone at Sega felt they stood to lose more than they did to gain, or literally did not have the spare cash needed to do the post-release stuff. IF this rumor is true, of course.

We've been forwarded to "relevant people" within Gearbox to see if an official statement can be brought forth.

Well I guess there is still the cost of the carts, packaging, printing and transport.

What a fucking shame. The visuals and animations were pretty good for a DS game. Although it looked like the aliens were trying to rape the marine dude every time they got a hold of him.

For fuck's sake, I swear that Aliens: Colonial Marines has got to be cursed. First the PS2 iteration got canceled, then the current gen version, and now a DS game? At least Aliens: Crucible will be awesome, right? Right...?

Good grief. I don't know why I want Aliens: Colonial Marines for the 360 so badly. Despite Jim Sterling's near painful boner for Aliens games, I'm actually hard pressed to remember a good one, or one that lived up to the promise. I was hoping that A:CM would be that game. In fact, screw it all. I just want a game which is a straight movie tie-in with Aliens. I want it to be written by people who are still scared/exhilarated when they watch that movie, and I want it voiced by all the original cast ala Ghostbusters. Seriously, if that game can spin a coin and muster a release date, Aliens sure as crap should be able to.

Gotta lol here. Like they postponed Aliens: Colonial Marines for Aliens vs Predator. "Hey you know that highly anticipated Aliens game we were going to give you? Well we're pushing it aside to bring you Aliens vs Predator, a game I'm sure many will be ...Highly anticipating."
