Alien Swarm gets new mode, difficulty setting in update photo

Valve has announced that the free, squad shooter Alien Swarm has received an update. A new "Onslaught" mode adds an AI Director for players to contend with. That means there will be swarms of aliens spawning in based on whatever mad science they've devised and the mode works with any of the game's difficulty settings.

Speaking of difficulty settings, that's the next big part of the update. "Brutal" difficulty is now available to play and Valve claims that nobody on the Alien Swarm team has completed a mission on the setting. On top of that, there's now a "Hardcore Friendly Fire" option which ups the penalty for not keeping your teams firing lines clear.

Alien paratroopers is the only next logical step that would surprise me now with the AI engine.

Insane was already too hard for me. I'd prefer some new maps, but it's cool that they are updating a free game at all.

That game is tough enough as it was, but I usually do have the unfortunate pleasure of playing with at least one numb nut who acts like he is trying to speed run it.

Well...thanks Valve... I guess.

Even though you've been able to enable the director since the game came out, with: asw_horde_override 1.

But hey, I ain't sneezing at new content. Even if it is just a new mode and difficulty.

With the right team, it's damn fun playing on insane; trumps all other difficulties. Can't wait to try out this new mode.

@Skribble,

Right... and now you don't have to "cheat" in order to enable it.

This game was all right for the first 5 days. Now it's oldhat. Got better games to be playing and better things to do with the HDD space.

The AI director was already hacked in. It's hilariously difficult, even on Easy.
