You can expect Red Dead Redemption to be at the top of nearly every "game of the year" list over the next few weeks, but it would seem that TIME magazine, of all places, is going against the grain. The revered publication has placed Alan Wake atop its top ten games of 2010.
Other surprising (but welcome) hits in TIME's top ten list were Angry Birds, Limbo and Super Meat Boy, all of which deserve praise. The rest of the picks were the games you would expect, but here's the top ten list anyway if you'd like to argue about it:
- Alan Wake
- Angry Birds
- Red Dead Redemption
- Halo: Reach
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Limbo
- Super Meat Boy
- Super Street Fighter IV
- Starcraft II
- Mass Effect 2
Much respect to TIME for listing a mobile game, as well two of the year's very best downloadable titles. It's almost like the guys who put this list together know what the f*ck they're talking about, which is pleasant.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

You can't see why Alan Wake could be someone's GOTY? It was close to top spot on mine. Or was that a poor attempt at sarcasm?
Also, cocks.
Heavy rain was at best just okay. No Fan boy shit but playin a movie isn't really fun. Kind of surprized no sony ex are in the list.
Alan wake was pretty awesome. I own the collectors edition. Def at least top 3 games of the year on my list least anyways
Don't necessarily agree with Alan Wake at one but thats just my personal opinion, I could see how many others would place it their!
Also suprised by the generally weak presence of PS3 games on GOTY lists! What about GOW3????
Screw this Android/iShit gaming craze. Let it die and focus on real games. Like Alan Wake, which I'm very glad to see up there. I think it had enough unique elements to put it ahead of other games that came out, and if nothing else the atmosphere and overall writing structure was far superior than any of the other games on the list.
I'll never see the hype behind Grand Theft Carriage, and obviously I'm not too fond of mobile games being given the same treatment as AAA titles, but everything else on here seems pretty solid. Overall, good job.
I'd like to see the core mechanic expanded a bit should there be a sequel, but a great game nonetheless.
How is Angry Birds a "false game"?
Good call, Time!
Too bad Time got the person of the year wrong, picking the Facebook creator over Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange.
Indeed. Red Dead bored the fuck out of me.
You'd have a point if Alan Wake was a horror game. It's a "Psychological Action Thriller", and it did that rather well.
I'm find with it. I'm sick of seeing Red Dead and Mass Effect 2 atop these damn lists.
Call Of Dooooooody.
You're such a turd burglar.
If they can fix a few small problems, Alan Wake 2 will be a beast!
It's its own genre? Now you're just being silly.
You are on crack dude. Seriously.
basically...
Ya id totally pick a guy who is currently in jail on rape charges as my person of the year.
Because, most obviously, you burgle turds.
Also, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dragon Quest IX or for those of us who imported it, Two Worlds II (yes, it's THAT good).
@ nanowerx - "Too bad Time got the person of the year wrong, picking the Facebook creator over Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange."
Well, the award isn't necessarily about who did the most good, it's about who had the greatest impact. They gave it to Hitler in 1939, so...
I'm not a wikileaks supporter. I'm all for transparency in government, but I find Assange's willingness to compromise the lives of some of the individuals contained in the documents to be unnacceptable.
Back to my point though, it's not a rape charge, it's a Swedish sex crime that doesn't exist in other countries that he's being charged with. Consensual sex with a partner without the use of a condom despite the partner's request.
One of the charges is from a woman who claims that he used a broken condom during consensual sex.
Big difference from being charged with rape.
*consentual
dumbass!!
