Alan Wake going through 'fine-tuning,' could be nearing completion? photo

For once an Alan Wake story has arisen without months of silence prefacing it. Last week Remedy announced that they were going to show a special trailer at the Max Payne premier in Finland. Today 1UP put up an interview with Sam Lake, lead writer behind Alan Wake. Among a smattering of topics, one key thing can be gleaned. Alan Wake appears to be nearing completion.

From the interview:
With the first Max Payne, we were only a couple of months from the release when the bullet-time found its final form. We always knew we wanted something like that in the game, but we went though many different iterations until we found the final design. Alan Wake remains true to the original vision of the game, but we are still fine-tuning different elements, making sure that this will be a best possible realization of that vision.
The comparison between the final changes in Max Payne (months before release) and Alan Wake can be construed as a sign that the game is possibly close to completion. It’s odd that Lake would talk about final fixes without thinking that Wake was years away. It’s a thin rope, but I’ve remained hopeful that the game is on the horizon since the Xbox 360’s launch.

What do you guys think? Does a new trailer on a big screen and talk of “fine-tuning” make you think close to final form? Do you still have obsessive Alan Wake thoughts as you lay in bed at night?

Hopefully it won't be a failure if this news is suddenly being tossed out there like that. Yeah, uh who am I kidding? It's probably going to suck.

Brad, you are my favorite D-Toid editor for referencing the Dark Tower books in that screenshot.

Can I have your children?

I really want to see that new trailer. Hopefully we can see Alan Wake release in 2009.

Alan Wake has not forgotten the face of his father, then?

Maybe we're so used to getting hit by the hype train, that when don't we're a bit confused. They've been working on it since before 360 launch, they must be somewhere... I think.

I don't know. A trailer is just a trailer no matter where it's shown. I'm not getting excited until I get a release date.

It sounds like good news, but I think I will wait for something a bit more concrete before getting excited.

In a round about sort of way, Alan Wake is alot like Stephen King in the Dark Tower series, so I don't know if that caption was intentional or not, but good job ;)

Excepting the first four books, Dark Tower was poorly written tripe, with horrible characterisation of all the peripheral characters, and ridiculous deus ex machina popping up at just the right moment. As far as I remember he even references it at some point on the back of a note. Self indulgent shit, and I wish I'd stopped after Wizard and Glass. I've never seen something go down hill so fast.

On the flip side, Alan Wake looks interesting.

Almost forgot about this game. Good to see it's still alive. Though I'd really love to see a Max Payne 3. I love those noir thrillers.

The Man in Black fled across the Desert, and the Gunslinger followed.

Sami Järvi also said that they wouldn't release a trailer yet if it weren't for the Max Payne movie. So don't get your hopes up.

It better come out next year...

There hasn't been anything quite like Max Payne and I hope they can bring out something so unique again.

A good game, thats all I want. It would be devastating for them to abandon the immensely fun Max Payne series for 4 years to end up making a bad game instead. It feels like they put a lot of eggs in Mr. Wake's basket.

Well it surely won't be another max payne of industry clone phenomenon again, all those clones and the matrix thing again.

But Alan Wake peeked my intrest from its simple synopsis of evil dead meets silent hill meets something new aspect(s).

I think this is the genuine Hype machine unlike Assassin's Creed (meaning Alan Wakes hype 80% internet word of mouth, Assassin creed paid for word of mouth)

I really, really hope this game's story doesn't revolve around some sort of dream-based mindfuckery, simply because the characters name's 'A.Wake'. I like my titles with some subtlety, you Finnish bastards.
