Alan Wake is a game that, until this year's E3, could have understandably been considered vaporware. The game's been in development since 2005 and very little was known about it until it's big reveal a few months ago. Developer Remedy has confessed however that, while the game could have been released ages ago, it would have simply been an "okay" game, and the team didn't want that.
"It’s been since 2005 ... we’ve been crafting this thing and I mean we could’ve put something out much earlier to be honest, and it would’ve been probably okay," explains Matias Mylllyrinne. "But for us, we only want to come out with a game when we have something to say and a point to make so when gamers put down their hard earned cash on a game, the Remedy brand on that box needs to be a seal of quality so they’re getting a certain movie like experience with good story and a good character."
Alan Wake is due out in 2010, and I'm really quite looking forward to it. What about you guys?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Game development is a tough thing to deal with because of these reasons haha
Will it meet our expectations? Well that's a different matter.
Agreed. Why Microsoft doesn't ever feel like pushing Games for Windows alongside of the 360 is beyond me: that's two markets!
And Dragon Age. Despite a series of silly trailers, it seems people who can get their hand on actual code general praise it, this is driving me mad :(
I hope you feel the same way about GT5 since it has been in development for over 5 years and in the end it's just another racing game.
I'll hold my judgment of that game until I play it. As for people saying they are glad these people slaved over a game for 5 years? Well I damn well hope they make millions because I'm sure more then a few developer families have suffered. And for what?
Win-win situation for me, honestly.
A valid point, although I think you are forgetting that not only did Too Human not live up to the hype but it was also a particularly bad game.
Not many developers have the luxury and balls to develop games like this. Publisher have demands, consumers have demands (and sometimes very harsh things to say). Obviously there are two sides to thing, one spectrum being like Duke Nukem Forever, and the other being a game that may be long in the making but really shows it and is worth it. I hope Alan Wake is the latter.
It's certainly got a lot of potential.
That is all.
Or from another angle: many reviewers review games without taking price into account. Crazy notion to some I know, but it isn't a difficult task to separate quality and cost. Likewise, a similar separation should exist between quality and development time.
