Aion website launches for NCsoft's new MMO photo

Another MMO, you say? Gosh, break out the party hats. Seriously though, I actually give a damn about NCsoft releases, and that probably has a great deal to do with the character creation system (otherwise known as pure crack cocaine for the comic book nerd) in City of Heroes. Apparently not afraid to talk big, NC claims Aion to be "the most visually stunning MMORPG ever made." That's lovely, guys, but what makes it different from every other online grind out there?

Aion centers around the concept of flight, not for transport alone but also for battle. They also claim to be introducing PvPvE, a system that claims to combine PvP and PvE play into one seamless game experience. I'm not sure if I think the concept is good or disturbing. Do I want to be unprepared for a legion of seventeen year olds disguised as flying monkeys to loot my sh*t at anytime? I guess it does add that element of reality in there. Anyway, throw in a storyline with an epic war brewing between Divine beings, and you get the idea of what Aion is going for.

Bottom line: I need a reason to play an MMO other than grinding. As beautiful as this game does look, and as much faith as I have in NCsoft, I still am not convinced it's worth it to play it. It seems to be a new syndrome cropping up in the gamer community --MMO's aren't worth the amount of time you pour into them. What would make you want to play an MMO enough to give up real life time to do so?

If this is about the great war between heaven and hell count me in. If it's just another fantasy mmo, but with flying battles, the gameplay would have to be pretty damn good to earn my monthly fee.

Sounds a LOT like Eve Online ... sorry, NCSoft, CCP has you beat by four years of non-beta time :p

The only thing that keeps me from doing any more MMOs is the month to month pricing. I loved City of Heroes, and I played it for about a year, but I just couldn't justify spending so much on it, even though I loved it (I fully agree with you on the character creation in that game Colette, that game rocked the character designs.)

If this game offered little to no fee to play, I'd definitely play, because the idea of PvPvE and everything revolving around flying really really interests me, but I really don't feel like shelling out 15 bucks a pop on top of 50 bucks. I'll go back to my 360, thx.

I'm not usually much for MMOs. I tried WOW, quit it, because like everyone else who has commented, the fees are balls. We'll see how this one turns out though, I have to admit I'm intrigued.

Destructoid guild FTW!

PvPvE? What exactly does that mean? The website doesn't clarify any, the description just sounds like what a lot of other MMOs already do.

@ Mxyzptlk

PvPvE means each server is going to be unique and different from other servers. There are 2 races that are playable from 2 different parts of the world. you can consider one is light the other is dark. Each players action by doing quests, killing monsters, or inhabiting certain areas within the world will make the world "change." Nothing will stay the same.

ie: if you go to a noob area full of baby dragons and u kill all baby dragons, and do that everyday, those baby dragons will become extinct, other changes such as; Then Mother dragons come to kick the ass of the noobs who killed the baby dragons and so on.

Another change is how the world shows, if more evil people (looking @ Colette) like to kill good things, and liter Mcdonald milkshakes on the highway, then your server will turn into a dark dark place... where evil Ronald will come to get u.

Each players actions will change the world in this sense.

Hmm. As much as I want to be excited about the incoming MMO deluge (Conan, Warhammer, The Secret World, Starcraft, and now this), nothing seems to be able to tear me away from EVE. Maybe it's the fact that it doesn't demand a massive time commitment (your skills continue leveling once you log out), but I keep coming back every time I try a different MMO - even WoW. Plus the fact that the game's absurdly steep learning curve almost - almost - guarantees that griefers and other dickwads get weeded out by the opening tutorial.

I mean, yeah, flying's cool, I guess. But I can wipe out entire asteroid fields with a single button. There's no denying how friggin' sweet that is.

If it grinds, never mind.

This game looks really interesting...

I can't get into PC games though, not sure why. I always feel like I should be typing or looking at porn while I'm at my computer. Plus I don't have any of those fancy specs that will most likely be required to run the game.
