Age of Empires has a future after Ensemble Studios folds photo

After the completion of Halo Wars, Ensemble Studios is closing. Yesterday, we learned that Microsoft will gather up the majority of employees and hug them closely to its bosom in the aftermath. Questions still remain about the closure, but thanks to the comments of Kevin Unangst (director, Games for Windows) we now know that Age of Empires will survive.

Unangst told readers at GamerScoreBlog to "stay tuned" and not worry about the fate of Age of Empires after the Ensemble closing:

As many of you have heard, Ensemble Studios will be closing after Halo Wars is complete. If you’re a PC gamer, you’ve likely played some version of Age of Empires somewhere along the line. I want to reassure you that Microsoft will still own the Age of Empires intellectual property. As a company, we’re very excited about the future potential for Age of Empires, and as a PC gamer I’m looking forward to what that future holds. Stay tuned.

While I admit that Age of Mythology really blew, I remember quite fondly the days I would just sit and play Age of Empires for hours on end. The Ensemble closing reminds me of the fragility of the industry, and how quickly one's favorite games can be buried. In this regard, I'm happy that AoE will find a new home.

What do you guys think of this news? Does Age of Empires have a bright future without all of the guys at Ensemble around?

I loved Age2 especially the level editor part to it, the later ones were shit though! Saying that though i felt the same after Red Alert with the C&C series!!

Age2 has taken up a huge amount of my time already... time for other fresher franchises to take its place :-)

Age of Empires II is a cult game.

God I fucking love it. Best computer game of all time. I still play it.

Yeah well Age of Empires III wasn't so great, but I wasn't too happy when I heard Ensemble was kicking the bucket. Seeing as it seems it's going to be entirely different people doing any future AoE games, I'm highly skeptical. But I'll give it a chance and hope for the best. They could release five more shitty AoE games and I could buy them all and still have gotten my money's worth net from the franchise.

Hey.... what was wrong with Age of Myth? Hours where spent lanning with friends on that game... though the titan expansion was kinda lame... it was still fun trying to stop your enemy form raising the damn thing, only to be creamed as it burst through the ground.

Maby it was just us...

I loved All the age of empires leading up to 3 (didn't care much for 3, if anything just because of the flavour). Myth was just fine!

That was the first thing I worried about when I heard they were closing.

AoM was pretty solid, no AoE2 but it was good. The expansion blew.

AoE-III was fun but balance issues, poor online service/ladder, and some other bugs kinda ruined it for me.

AoE3 and AoM expansion both broke one of the major rules that drives me away from RTS games, they made the simplest to play race (the one with the least depth) the overpowered one.

Too bad about Ensemble as I really like all of there works. AoE3 was fun, but not really all that great. I also liked Age of Mythology, glad I'm not alone there. I thought it was a cool concept to mix all sorts of mythology into an RTS game and then throw Titans in the mix with massive destruction.

Maybe this will be the shakeup thats needed for the next AoE game as I think they really had something special with AoE2. A return to greatness is needed after the lackluster 3rd title.

This is what ms relly means by there statement! 1. They own the rights to age of empires, which is obvious, and therefore a non-statement. 2. The next version is going to be on xbox!
