Age of Conan director Gaute Godager has taken his leave from Funcom and a replacement has already been found in former Anarchy Online director Craig Morrison. Godager explains his departure in a statement:

I have done my very best making this fabulous game, but I have concluded there are elements which I am dissatisfied with. I have decided to act on this, and as a result I have chosen to leave Funcom. It is time to get new, fresh eyes on Age of Conan, and I wholeheartedly support the appointment of Craig.

As far as we can tell Godager wasn’t caught trying to cyber with players in AoC, so his parting words must be genuine. Personally, I haven’t had the opportunity to play AoC yet but I’ve been hearing that it has suffered from a lack of support. If the Xbox 360 version is still being kicked around after this switch I'll hopefully be able to get my hands on it then - preferably with all the bugs ironed out.

What do you guys think? Does the game need a fresh analysis and a new approach? Is an Anarchy Online guy going to bring the right solutions to the issues in AoC?

"I found some stuff that I wasn't happy with so instead of staying and fixing these things I decided to flee"

Probably because AoC is failing hard. The game builds up and is a lot of fun... until you hit lvl 20, and leave the starting zone. No content, more grinding than I've seen in any MMO, and ruthless ganking

I wouldn't be surprised if he was just let go and given the opportunity to leave on his own to save face. I mean, they had a replacement lined up pretty quick, and it saves face on both ends if it doesn't look like the director was fired because he wasn't raking in the doe.

Aside from that though, I'm not sure what to expect from the director of AO. I played AO:Shadowlands way back when and I just remember facing spiders and rock monsters at low levels, then ever larger spiders and rock monsters at higher levels. I hope AoC won't just turn into an array of huge giants and huger giants.

As mentioned above, the game is simply awesome until lvl 20. After that, the game devolves into a broken barren mess. Many of the talents are broken and don't work. Once you get past the late 30's most of the game's quests start to dry up and leveling devolves into pointless grinding.

The game has potential. I feel that it should have stayed in development for another year. If the majority of the game was as finely crafted as the starting 1-20 area, then it would have been a hit. I played for two months before quiting, not wanting to waste my time with a broken game.
