Again, seriously: Gran Turismo 5 delayed again photo

I imagine that the Polyphony Digital offices are a place where things never get done. The team comes into work at 1 p.m. or whenever they feel like it. The bathroom is filthy and hasn't been cleaned in years. Their 2009 office Christmas party will happen sometime in March 2010. The computers aren't even on in the office. They're all sitting in the lobby playing Texas hold 'em with their ties tied around their heads like headbands. Drinking beer.

I don't know what goes on there, but I do know that there's another delay to their newest, Gran Turismo 5. We were just about to round the last corner for the release, as it was scheduled to release in Japan in March. Now that has been pushed back one more month. No reason was given, and Sony says that they'll announce the new date soon.

I think it's business related. March is a busy month for PS3 (GoW and FF13), so it's not smart to release a third AAA-game for PS3 at the same time. It gives more time for polish to perfection (which it better be, after all these years), and they're shortening the gap between JP and US/EU release date.
Business as usual.

They had to scrap it and remake it again so it would be better then Forza 3.

For what it's worth, the Gamestop pre-order page has it listed for a November U.S. release. I would be very displeased if that is the case.

What are they going for? Some duke nukem shit? I really don't see how one month matters with how much this game has been on delay.

RELEASE THE FUCKING GAME ALREADY.

I'm a massive fan of the old GTs but there's no way GT5 will be better than Forza 3, even after this frankly rediculous development cycle, the game will still be waaay to japanese and user unfriendly.

Bummer delay to be sure but let's put this in to perspective and be honest with ourselves: GT5 was going to be on the backlog anyway, so many other quality releases during the same window.

Besides, what are we talking about, thirty days? And even then supposedly only the Japanese release is delayed.

As a token of apology, those who pre-ordered Gran Turismo 5 before this announcement will receive a free fleshlight (lube not included).

They've ruined E3! It's tradition.... every year they announce GT5, show incredible footage... and every year it's either delayed or they cannot give a firm release date. Why are they messing up the system?

Ah well... hopefully they'll keep the tradition alive by delaying the game long enough that they can once again show it off at E3 with no release date!

@Strandli: FF13 is already released in Japan so I doubt it's because competition.

Has there actually been a confirmed NA/EU release date?

I guess this is a sign of the changing times. Western devs can push a game out quicker, because they can do 3D graphics well and use a lot of premade tools to cut time. With Polyphony, they like many japanese studios, including the mighty Square Enix, are taking far too long to develop their games.

FFXIII is one thing being an rpg, but GT5 is a fucking driving game. It should not take this long to hit shelves.

Don't think it will matter much, as Forza has already stolen the crown.

I remember back when GT3 was going to release, I saw some show about that company, and it showed them sleeping under their desks and not going home for weeks. They had curtains hanging up on the bottom of their desks and pillow on the floor. so they can pull the shade for some shuteye. Whether they actually do that is a different story, but I'd be crazy if I work that much.

@Cowboy TTop: They actually said they throw the previous engine and start from scratch...
Worst part is, for the look of it (only based on the demo, though) GT5 is going to feel short compared to Forza.
Because of these delays, we migh even get the next NFS+Burnout game before GT5.

Its obvious that they delayed the Japanese version in order to maintain a worldwide launch with the rest of the territories.

The game releasing in March for US and EU would have been a ridiculous proposition anyways, with Heavy Rain releasing in late February and the PS3's biggest game after GT5 being launched in march (gow3).

Also, how can a game be delayed so many times (what you are inferring) when it has never had an official launch window outside of this March Japanese release date. Technically this is GT5's first delay ever, talk about misrepresentation..lol.

Lastly, you guys should really update this blog post for clarification, especially regarding the fact that SCEE has confirmed that the Japanese delay of the game has no affect on the European release date.

Before the delay, the game was going to be as realistic as actually driving a car. Now, it's going to be more realistic than that.

That header and first paragraph are amazing.

As long as I convince myself Polyphony isn't a part of the Japanese workhorse machine I totally envision it being that way.

HOLY HELL. The last true Gran Turismo (GT4) was released in early 2005. Since then, ALL THREE FORZAS have been released. Really? REALLY?!?!?

I don't get you "racing game" types. I'm sorry, "driving simulators" as they're known today.

I never was a huge fan, but I was known back in my days to play games like Need for Speed and Road Rash. I even beat Starwars: Pod Racer! However, my girlfriend was here recently and we decided to download some demos off Xbox Live and I *think* this game was one of them. Maybe it was GT4. Whatever, I can't be for certain, so use your imagination, here.

...Annnnnd we laughed our asses off at how BAD it was.

I don't get the genre anymore, at all. Like, I can go out and drive my car and not smash into a wall, but for some reason, on a "driving simulator", no matter what I do, I *WILL* smash into a wall, without fail, no matter my speed. I think I smashed into a wall going 60 at one point, which is likely the point I shut the shit off and went to ponder why any of my fellow gamers subject themselves to such horseshit...

@Schmo0zle

if you downloaded it from xbox live it was probably forza 2 or 3, as GT is a Sony exclusive game.

Also, the delay is a good thing: why would you release this game in the same month as GOW3 and FF13? That would be pretty damn stupid. I didn't like the time trial demo so this is completely off the radar for me either way.

I wouldn't pick it up before April but since there's no mention of US and EU we can expect it by October if we are lucky. I seriously hope the game sucks balls though as I hate the attitude being shown by Polyphony forever Digital, assholes.

This reminds me of the very first issue of Playstation The Official Magazine where they talked about how Polophony has the best offices ever, they have fucking 4 star level hotel rooms on site with showers and beds for "long nights where it's faster to pass out and wake up there than go home.

Who here besides me thinks they got the idea that they could pull a 3D Realms and enjoy free room and board for a few extra months?

@Schmo0zle - when you say you don't get us driving simulator folk, and you laughed your asses off at how bad it was, there's a clear and very obvious conclusion to draw from it. You don't understand it largely because you've no interest in how cars are simulated, and hence no compulsion to understand how the game works.
You like your 'racing' games of old because they were simple left, right, faster, slower games. No concept of physics, no concept of racing lines, no concept of grip or power transfer or generally stuff that goes on in real cars.
Your everyday car is a method of getting you from A to B in as lease fuss as possible. You probably even call the services if you get a flat tyre. But that's no problem, that's just the way you are. You couldn't give two hoots about driving for pleasure, or driving for excitement.

But remember, just because you're shit at a game, does not make it bad.

@MesonW

Exactly....

Just because you can land a plane on the carrier in Over-G Fighters does not make you a fighter pilot... and if you crash it that does not mean the game is shit for not guiding you safely to the deck..... It means you suck at maintaining control of the "aircraft".....

Conversely if you can drive across the rainbow road to work in a go-kart doesn't make you Mario, it means you are crazy and the white coats will be along shortly.

I was sooo looking forward to this. I bought a G25 race wheel and built a cockpit mostly for this game alone. At this point it has got to be the single best racing experience anyone on the planet has ever seen if I'm going to give them my money. It is starting to dip into the realm of DNF in that it can't possibly live up to the expectation that the overhyping and constant delays have created.
